ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Twelve Heads of St. John the Baptist by Jake Wildstrom

As played on ifMUD on December 11, 2010

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Twelve Heads of St. John the Baptist, written by Jake Wildstrom. The Twelve Heads of St. John the Baptist was originally released as part of Speed-IF Introcomp. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | It is a little known fact that SpeedIF is fueled by valuable religious
Floyd | artifacts. Only with the concentrated spiritual power of an object of
Floyd | devotion can true creativity be unleashed. Preparing for the new
Floyd | SpeedIF, you had engineered a conduit between the head of St. John the
Floyd | Baptist and the Primary Source to drive the event, but at some point
Floyd | the head was stolen by some filthy Quebecois heretics! Fortunately,
Floyd | your training prepared you for such a contingency, and hours before the
Floyd | event was due to start, you overcame the guards to raid the secret
Floyd | storehouse of the Quebecois Iconoclast Society. Unfortunately, they've
Floyd | been at the head-stealing game longer than you've been at the
Floyd | head-rescuing game, and they've built up quite a collection.

Floyd |
Floyd | Chamber of the Heads
Floyd | This treasure house has been thoroughly sacked -- by you, of course.
Floyd | Locked chests have been reduced to kindling, reliquaries to so much
Floyd | broken glass and leading. You are certain that you have found all that
Floyd | this secret trove has to offer. It's probably best not to hang around.
Floyd | The guards are sure to wake up eventually. The only egress is out to
Floyd | the west.

Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "heh heh heh - great intro"
Binder says, "oh man I didn't realize this IF was autobiography"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying:

Floyd | the head from Israel
Floyd | the head from England

Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says, "heh"
Johnny asks, "Do we juggle at any point?"
Bishop makes a note to add 'juggle' as a command to a future release.
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "juggle heads"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "aw"
Jacqueline says, "Timing"
DavidW says, "I'm assuming they're on a bandolier or whatever those equipment sashes are called."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x head from France"
Floyd | Polished carbuncles have been firmly fixed into the eye-sockets of this
Floyd | seemingly ordinary skull. The words "Saint Jean le Baptiste" have been
Floyd | roughly carved into the jaw.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
inky says, "or they could be in a dufflebag"
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x germany"
Floyd | Dried skin is stretched tightly over the skull, and two plain-cut green
Floyd | gemstones, possibly agate, fill the eye-sockets. A brass plaque riveted
Floyd | to the forehead reads "Sankt Johannes der T?ufer".
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says, "Maybe we're wearing cargo pants with lots of pockets."
DavidW says, "Or in an oversized Pez dispenser."
Binder says (to Floyd), "x israel"
Floyd | This battered head has seen better days. The mummified flesh shows
Floyd | rough abrasions, and it is free of adornments, lacking even glass eyes.
Floyd | Someone has scrawled a Hebrew word in pencil across the forehead.

DavidW says, "Some details will be missing."
Binder says, "oic"
maga arrives, ready to play with the toys. Johnny says, "Oh yeah, guards"
DavidW says, "We should probably head west. We can probably examine our loot later."
Binder says, "Fair enough"

Floyd | Outside of the Cave
Floyd | You are deep in a trackless desert, hidden within a dimensional fold in
Floyd | Quebec. A rip in space-time is off to what you arbitrarily describe as
Floyd | north in this compassless space, and off to the east the earth descends
Floyd | into a cave.
Floyd |
Floyd | The well-armed and muscular guardians of the treasures stored here lie
Floyd | about unconscious. For shame, sleeping on the job!
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says, "Poor Job."
Jacqueline sends that e-mail to Maude... er, Amanda.
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x guards"
Floyd | They look so innocent and nonthreatening when they're all conked out
Floyd | like that.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "wake guards"
Floyd | Bad idea. They would not be at all happy to see you.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says (to Floyd), "kill guards"
Floyd | Leave them be. They're harmless now.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "awww"
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x spain"
Floyd | This preserved head has a lifelike grimace made more unnerving by the
Floyd | blood-red garnets serving as eyes. Across the back of the head, in red
Floyd | ink, are written the words "San Juan el Bautista".
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x turkey"
Floyd | Flowing Arabic letters in gold leaf adorn the cheekbones of this
Floyd | bleached skull, which stares at you with unnerving ruby eyes.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x italy"
Floyd | Dazzling gems and a crown of gold have been inlaid into the sunken
Floyd | flesh of this preserved head. A macabre chain of rubies is embedded
Floyd | into the severed base of the neck, and garnets serve as eyes. Carved
Floyd | letters on the facets of the rubies read "Sanctus Ioannes Baptista".
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x russia"
Floyd | This preserved head is gaudily painted and overlaid with gold leaf,
Floyd | with haloes around the emerald eyes inscribed with Cyrillic writing.

Binder asks, "shall we escape to ... Canada? through the timespace rip?"
Johnny says, "Feel free"

Floyd |

Binder says, "WHAT. This isn't Canada."
DavidW says, "There needs to be more IF set in Canada."
Bishop says, "It _might_ be Canada. There are places in Canada like that. I think."
Binder says, "Is it? I guess this could be the parts of Canada I haven't seen yet."
DavidW says, "Canada is a big place."
Binder says, "Or maybe this is a hash bar in Vancouver."
Jacqueline says (to Bishop), "haha"
Binder says (to Floyd), "x xyzzy"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to DW), "haha more"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x custard"

Floyd | You taste nothing unexpected.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Johnny), "You expected defeat."
Johnny says, "True."
Bishop maybe should do a release 2 incorporating any unanticipated actions people do here.
Jacqueline says, "Do not listen to it, for it will only sound of purple."

Johnny asks, "Xyzzy or widdershins?"
Binder says (to Johnny), "you brought 'er, you widdershins"
DavidW says, "well, whichever takes us to a new place. The other probably goes back to our previous location."
DavidW says, "Try xyzzy first."
Johnny says (to Floyd), "xyzzy"

DavidW says, "ah."
Johnny says (to Floyd), "widdershins"
Floyd | Library
Floyd | The Quebecois would, in their infuriatingly un-American way, refer to
Floyd | this particular institution as the "Biblioth?que et Archives nationales
Floyd | du Qu?bec". It's after hours: the stacks are dark, and what
Floyd | illumination there is comes from the windows and from the disturbing
Floyd | gash in reality to the west. The main doors are locked, so you'll have
Floyd | to leave through the basement.
Floyd |
Floyd | An ancient bound volume sits on a table, barely visible in the low
Floyd | light.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says, "Ah, if I'd know I would have said "To the library!" first."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x volume"
Floyd | The old, worn pages document the doings of the early Catholic Church.

DavidW says (to Floyd), "read volume"
Floyd | The old, worn pages document the doings of the early Catholic Church.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says (to clubfloyd), "ooh, a primitive RSS feed"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look up john the baptist in volume"
Floyd | A careful search turns up an enigmatic reference by an early Church
Floyd | father to John's fate after death: "for as he eschewed earthly
Floyd | splendour in life, so is it fitting that after death his holy remnants
Floyd | be clothed in the gold he denied himself in life."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says (to clubfloyd), "aha." Johnny says, "Oho"
Johnny says, "Uhu"
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x greece"
Floyd | Delicate gold tracery is inlaid on this skull, otherwise unadorned but
Floyd | for the small malachite orbs resting in the eye-sockets. At the back of
Floyd | the skull, the tiny streams of gold collect intopools of gold leaf,
Floyd | spelling out the name of St. John in Greek.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "I imagine at least four of the head feature gold."
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x china"
Floyd | A plain skull, unmarked but for some very small Chinese characters
Floyd | inked on the inside. Disturbingly, it is full of cigarette butts and
Floyd | ash. Spherical jades set in the eye-sockets make this grisly artifact
Floyd | slightly less unnerving.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x zimbabwe"
Floyd | It's just an ordinary old skull. You have no particular reason to think
Floyd | it's from Zimbabwe, but you've got to call it something. You wouldn't
Floyd | even suspect it of being the head of St. John the Baptist, except for
Floyd | where you found it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "so it's not Spain, France, Germany or Israel."
Binder says, "or China or Zimbabwe, I guess. Assuming this book is truthy."
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x Hungary"
Floyd | A plain mummified head, with a golden skullcap but no other adornments.
Floyd | Etched onto the golden pate is a curicued desgn and the words
Floyd | "Keresztel? Szent J?nos".
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x England"
Floyd | This skull is bleached to a pure white. It is unadorned but for a band
Floyd | of silver about the head, with "Saint John the Baptist" inlaid in gold.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "Turkey had gold too."
Binder says (to Floyd), "x turkey"
Floyd | Flowing Arabic letters in gold leaf adorn the cheekbones of this
Floyd | bleached skull, which stares at you with unnerving ruby eyes.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says, "So, one of Greece, Italy, Turkey, or England."
Binder asks, "Isn't Hungary in the running, too?"
DavidW says, "oh Hungary too"
Johnny says, "Hmm. Maybe the skull is in pieces and we have to manufacture an Ur-skull."
inky asks, "c'mon, this is bishop, how can the answer not be hungary?"
DavidW asks, "hm. Maybe there's six with gold?"
Binder asks, "drop the ones which aren't gilt?"
DavidW says, "anyway, perhaps there's more clues to find."
Bishop says (to inky), "Heh. Knew someone would say that."
DavidW asks (of Binder), "no. What if we have to give one away?"
DavidW asks, "What if there's a clue that says this Catholic priest was lying?"
Binder says (to DavidW), "Fair point."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x books"

Floyd | off to the south.
Floyd |

DavidW asks, "Cool. We can do a late night library crawl?"

Floyd |
Floyd | Interlibrary Shuttle
Floyd | Tidy, clean, and sparsely decorated, this shuttle has but one purpose:
Floyd | to take people from one library to another.
Floyd |
Floyd | An exhausted chef is hunched over in one of the seats.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says (to Floyd), "x chef"
Floyd | You can tell he's a chef because he has a poofy hat. You can tell he's
Floyd | exhausted by his drooping eyelids and walking-dead expression.
Floyd |
Floyd | A toneless female voice says, "Please stay clear of the doors; the
Floyd | shuttle is departing."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "ask chef about john"
Floyd | He mumbles sulkily in French. Clearly he regards your chatter as an
Floyd | intrusion.
Floyd |
Floyd | The doors slide shut and the train starts moving.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "show france to chef"
Floyd | The tired pastry chef doesn't seem interested.
Floyd |
Floyd | A series of discordant chimes sounds and a voice recites, "Next stop:
Floyd | The Interactive Fiction Archive."
Floyd |
Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask chef about creme brulee"
Floyd | He mumbles sulkily in French. Clearly he regards your chatter as an
Floyd | intrusion.
Floyd |
Floyd | The train begins to slow down as it approaches the station.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Ellison wakes up. "whoa, next game already"
Johnny says, "Give or show maybe"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "give creme to chef"
Floyd | His eyes light up as he regards the pan-dimensional caramel. "Zut
Floyd | alors! Mon dieu! A custard out of time! By the empty eyes of le
Floyd | Baptiste! This transcends all culinary art!"
Floyd |
Floyd | The train jerks to a halt and the doors hiss open.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Ellison), "The Blind House was going into infinite loops."
Binder says, "aha, empty eyes"
DavidW says, "ooh. I missed that."
DavidW says, "so, that's clue #2."
Jacqueline says (to Ell), "Yeah, we had to bag Blind House. I've contact the author to see if she'll be kind enough to give us a graphics-free version that won't hang Floyd."
Ellison says (to Johnny), "it's a fourth ending!"
DavidW says, "We should go north."
Ellison asks, "where's this game from?"
Johnny says, "Speed-IF by Bishop."
DavidW says, "This is a speed-if from a year or two ago."
Ellison says, "nice"
DavidW says, "2007, going by the release line."
DavidW says, "Let's visit the archive."
Binder says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd |
Floyd | Archive Shuttle Station
Floyd | The Archive's shuttle stop is well-lit and cheery. A mosaic of a brass
Floyd | lantern adorns the northern wall, and the train waits to the south. A
Floyd | flight of stairs descends into the very nerve center of Interactive
Floyd | Fiction
Floyd |
Floyd | >

Floyd | Source
Floyd | This chamber deep in the earth houses the IF Archive's prime secret:
Floyd | the Source. From here it looks almost like an old-fashioned train
Floyd | engine room, except that the boiler, instead of being red-hot, sucks
Floyd | all the energy out of the room. It's hungry, and it wants to be fed.
Floyd |
Floyd | A sheet of official Archive letterhead lies on the ground.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Johnny says (to Floyd), "x sheet"
Floyd | This is the original document you were sent when the head was stolen.
Floyd | In brief, it mentions that the mummified head of St. John the Baptist
Floyd | has been stolen, and that it is your mission to recover it.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder asks, "hm, mummified. Were they all mummified?"
DavidW says, "no. That's clue #3."
DavidW asks, "So which head is mummified, empty eyes, and has gold?"
Binder asks, "alternately, how much fun would it be to feed random heads into the furnace and then undo from calamity?"
DavidW says (to Binder), "I imagine you'll do that any way."
Johnny says, "Israel is mummified and empty-eyed."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x israel"
Floyd | This battered head has seen better days. The mummified flesh shows
Floyd | rough abrasions, and it is free of adornments, lacking even glass eyes.
Floyd | Someone has scrawled a Hebrew word in pencil across the forehead.
Floyd |
Floyd | >
Binder says, "But no gold"
DavidW says, "no gold, though."
Johnny says, "Maybe the Hebrew says "IOU"."
Binder says, "Maybe it says Au."
