#ClubFloyd Discussion

|
Jacqueline hollers, "All muggles are invited to the Toyshop to play Flourish's new game. Should you decide to attend, your presense is requested in 13 minutes."
Jacqueline gets bored and wanders off to the Toyshop.
Jacqueline arrives, ready to play with the toys.
Yuri exclaims (at Jacqueline), "Hello!"
Jacqueline says, "Hi, Yuri."
Jacqueline asks, "I forget, have you done ClubFloyd before?"
Yuri asks (of Jacqueline), "How are you?" | * Jacqueline has added Yuri to the channel.
Yuri says (to Jacqueline), "No, I haven't been before. My first time. I've read some of the transcripts etc. though, so I know how it works ;-)" | Jacqueline says, "Possibly you have not, since you weren't on the channel."
Jacqueline says, "Can you speak on the channel? Give it a go."
Jacqueline says, "To speak on the channel, type #clubfloyd hello" | Yuri exclaims, "Hello!"
Jacqueline says, "Yay."
Jacqueline asks, "Okay, are you new to using channels, or do you have that bit down already?"
Yuri says, "ah, yes, thanks ;-)"
Yuri scratches his head
Yuri says, "I'm new, but I've read up on it... and I've hung around on MUDs and IRC back in the early 90s"
Jacqueline says, "Yes you're new, or yes you know how to use them? All I was going to say is that after you've established a channel by prefacing your statement with #channel, you can then shorten that to just a semi-colon."
Jacqueline says, "Ah, timing. Okay, great."
djfletch arrives, full of neither funk nor fun.
Yuri sorry I seem to be slightly lagged
DavidW arrives, ready to play with the toys. | djfletch says, "hello hello"
Yuri says, "argh sorry, semi-colon"
Jacqueline says, "So you'll know from reading the transcripts then that during the game we chat on the channel and only play the game in the room - that's how the transcript separates things out."
Yuri exclaims, "yes, thanks!"
Jacqueline says (to Yuri), "No problem. We all do the : for a ; now and then."
Jacqueline says (to djf), "Howdy."
Yuri says (to Jcqueline), "Thanks..."
Jacqueline says, "Hello, Mr. David."
Jacqueline says (to Yuri), "You're welcome."
Jacqueline says, "And welcome to ifMUD."
DavidW says, "morning, Ms. J."
DavidW says, "My eyes are still trying to focus."
Jacqueline says, "Just so folks know, vimes has been working on an easier transcript processing script, so we should get transcripts updated sometime soon, with streamlined goodness."
Jacqueline says, "Well, today there is no survey. We know what we're playing for the next 2-3 (possibly 4) weeks. Today is Muggle Studies, next week we start working through the Apollo 18+20 stuff."
Jacqueline says, "So your eyes don't have to be open just yet."
DavidW says, "Oculos tergeo!"
Jacqueline says, "hahaha"
Jacqueline says, "So, it's time."
Jacqueline asks, "Who here has not yet played Muggle Studies?"
djfletch says, "I haven't played it."
DavidW says, "I have not played it."
Yuri says, "The time has come, the Walrus said, to speak of many things..."
Yuri hasn't | ||
Jacqueline says, "Well, I was a beta tester on this one, so I have."
Jacqueline says, "But I am going to enjoy watching you guys play."
Jacqueline says, "Flourish was hoping to give us a new version, but it didn't happen by Floydtime, so she apologizes and says that she knows about the thing that if I mentioned it might be a spoiler, so I won't."
zarf arrives, full of neither funk nor fun. | Jacqueline exclaims, "On that note, incipit ludum!"
Floyd | Welcome to the Cheap Glk Implementation, library version 0.9.0. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Magic is real. Floyd | Floyd | Or that's what the Headmaster of Hogwarts College--no, Hogwarts School Floyd | of Witchcraft and Wizardry--wants you to think. Assuming that you're Floyd | not going insane, it seems like he's probably right. How else could you Floyd | explain the way he appeared out of nowhere, or how he made you speak in Floyd | rhyming couplets for ten minutes, or how he brought your grandmother's Floyd | LladrĂ³ figurines to life and had them dancing with each other, or Floyd | packed all your things with the wave of a wand, or... Floyd | Floyd | Then, he asked you to be his new Professor of Muggle Studies. Whatever Floyd | a "Muggle" is. You just needed to sign the contract, say good-bye to Floyd | your old place, and you'd be whisked away. By magic. To Scotland. To Floyd | start your new job immediately. Floyd | Floyd | You asked for a little while to think. What you really meant, of Floyd | course, was "a little while to go on a bender in celebration of all Floyd | your notions about life and the world being shattered." That worked out Floyd | pretty well, except you woke up with a pounding headache and a signed Floyd | contract. Oh, and an old shoe, which apparently you are supposed to Floyd | touch whenever you want to be transported. You're not sure how that Floyd | works, but he put it around here somewhere--you can't quite remember Floyd | where--and you'd better find it if you want to make it to Hogwarts. Floyd | Floyd | A magical contract is probably pretty unbreakable, yeah? Floyd | Floyd | Muggle Studies Floyd | An exploration of the wonderful world of wizardry, with apologies to Floyd | J.K. Rowling, by Flourish Klink Floyd | Release 1 / Serial number 120331 / Inform 7 build 6G60 (I6/v6.32 lib Floyd | 6/12N) Floyd | For more information about the game, or how to play IF, type ABOUT or Floyd | HELP. For hints on specific puzzles, type HINTS. Floyd | Floyd | Your Flat Floyd | Your simple one-room flat, suitable to the needs of a young teacher. Floyd | The place was advertised as a steal, and everyone who sees it has to Floyd | admit that its bones are good. Unfortunately, it hasn't been redone Floyd | since before the Second World War. Also, it's about the size of a Floyd | postage stamp. It's cheap, anyway... You've got a bed, a wardrobe, a Floyd | table, and an ancient Aga to cook on. One lonely broadside hangs on the Floyd | south wall. The door on the north wall leads to the rest of the Floyd | building. A packed trunk stands in the middle of the floor. Floyd | Floyd | On the table are a contract, a Hogwarts brochure, and a handful of Floyd | yellow Jelly Babies. Floyd | | DavidW asks, "hm. I know an Aga is a stove. What's a broadside?"
Jacqueline says, "You are ahead of me. I had no idea what an Aga was."
Yuri says (to Floyd), "read contract"
Floyd | >You read: A lot of legalese committing you to teach at Hogwarts for a Floyd | full year, blah, blah, blah, painful death if you don't fulfill the Floyd | terms of the contract, blah, blah, blah, then the signatures Albus Floyd | Dumbledore and Alice Armstrong. Yep. That's your drunk-signature. You'd Floyd | know it anywhere. Floyd | Floyd | Holy shit. It says that they can erase your memories if you don't Floyd | actually hold up your end of the deal. It says they can hex you. What Floyd | does hexing even mean? It doesn't sound very pleasant. ...looks like Floyd | you're going to have to go to Hogwarts. Floyd | | djfletch says, "I'm not sure what a broadside is if it isn't boats shooting at each other."
Jacqueline says, "I think a broadside is a piece of paper."
Yuri says, "a broadside is a ship"
Yuri says, "sorry, side of a ship"
DavidW says, "f x broadside"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x broadside"
Floyd | >Sangita printed it. It's set in black type on white paper--an excerpt Floyd | of poetry by Shelley. Floyd | Floyd | You read: All day the wizard lady sate aloof, Floyd | Spelling out scrolls of dread antiquity, Floyd | Under the cavern's fountain-lighted roof; Floyd | Or broidering the pictured poesy Floyd | Of some high tale upon her growing woof, Floyd | Which the sweet splendour of her smiles could dye Floyd | In hues outshining heaven - and ever she Floyd | Added some grace to the wrought poesy. Floyd | Floyd | Now that you know what you know about magic, having "The Witch of Floyd | Atlas" on your wall is pretty damn ironic. Floyd | | Jacqueline says, "My husband has just confirmed this, and he served as one of the Britishism checkers for this game. heh"
Yuri says, "for example on old-fashioned navyships, the cannons were on broadside"
Jacqueline says (to Yuri), "That's another sort of broadside. :)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "who is Sangita"
Floyd | >You can't ask direct questions to the game. Type a verb - noun command Floyd | like EXAMINE HANDFUL OF YELLOW JELLY BABIES to interact with the story Floyd | world, or LOOK to get a description of your surroundings. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take all from table"
Floyd | >You can't use ALL in this story. Sorry. Floyd | | Jacqueline says, "I don't think 'remember' is implemented, but maybe it is."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x babies"
Floyd | >Jelly Babies just like any you'd buy in a shop, except they're all Floyd | yellow. Floyd | Floyd | The Grand High Mugglewump or whoever he is kept offering you sweets. Floyd | You tried to slip them down your sleeve so you didn't have to eat any. Floyd | Hopefully he didn't notice. Even if you liked Jelly Babies, you Floyd | probably couldn't have kept them down--you were pretty much in shock Floyd | after he appeared unexpectedly in your flat. Maybe he thought that Floyd | raising your blood sugar would help? Do wizards even have blood sugar? Floyd | Well, of course they have blood sugar, they're human, aren't they? Floyd | ...aren't they? God, this is not a good line of thinking. Floyd
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "remember sangita"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise. Floyd | | Jacqueline says, "Guess I was right."
Yuri says, "bloody lag! And yes: the piece of paper hypothesis seems better ;-)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take babies"
Floyd | >Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take contract"
Floyd | >Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take brochure"
Floyd | >Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x brochure"
Floyd | >A tri-fold brochure, like you'd see in any admissions office. This one Floyd | just happens to have moving pictures, including an aerial view of a Floyd | craggy, hodgepodge castle that must be Hogwarts itself. Floyd | Floyd | You read: Floyd | Floyd | HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY Floyd | Providing an excellent magical education since 909 AD Floyd | Headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Order of Merlin First Class, Grand Sorc., Floyd | Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump International Confed. of Wizards)--et Floyd | cetera, et cetera. Floyd | Floyd | ...wait a minute. That's not what the brochure said when Dumbledore Floyd | gave it to you at your interview. Then, it was about Hogwarts Floyd | College--not Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry--and it was all Floyd | about how Hogwarts provides extensive bursaries for nearly all its Floyd | students, and how they follow a unique educational programme, focusing Floyd | on life skills and personal interests. And the pictures didn't Floyd | move--and there certainly wasn't a picture of students flying around on Floyd | broomsticks--and the section about Hogwarts's history didn't mention Floyd | that most of the historical alumni still live there as ghosts. Floyd | Floyd | Of course, now that you think about it, it must have been an enchanted Floyd | brochure. After you accepted the job and Dumbledore broke the news Floyd | about magic to you, its nature changed. That makes as much sense as Floyd | anything seems to lately. Floyd
Yuri says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | >You are carrying: Floyd | a Hogwarts brochure Floyd | a contract Floyd | a handful of yellow Jelly Babies Floyd | an identity card Floyd
Yuri says (to Floyd), "x identity card"
Floyd | >The usual lilac-and-salmon card, with a picture of you looking awfully Floyd | peaked. Floyd | Floyd | You read: ALICE ARMSTRONG. Floyd | | DavidW says (to Yuri), "Good thought."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x trunk"
Floyd | >A steamer trunk that once belonged to your grandmother, covered in Floyd | dingy brown canvas and lined with outstandingly ugly floral-sprigged Floyd | paper. You can't see the paper, of course, because it's closed, stuffed Floyd | to the brim with your clothes and knicknacks. Floyd | Floyd | Headmaster Dumbledore waved around that ridiculous wand and everything Floyd | just jumped in there. The LladrĂ³s even wrapped themselves up in Floyd | newsprint to make sure they wouldn't crack! That probably convinced you Floyd | more than anything--parlor tricks aside, absolutely nothing could make Floyd | all your stuff fit in that little trunk except magic. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "open trunk"
Floyd | >There's nothing on top of the trunk, and you'd better not look inside. Floyd | Everything's packed, and if you opened it you probably couldn't get it Floyd | closed again. Anyway, you know that the old shoe's not in there. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take trunk"
Floyd | >That's too heavy for you, and anyway, why would you want to carry it? Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x wardrobe"
Floyd | >Sturdy, tall, wooden; a relic of your Grandma Gigi. The inside is Floyd | lined with outstandingly ugly floral-sprigged paper, twin to the trunk Floyd | she also left you. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "look under bed"
Floyd | >There's a drawer for storage under the bed, and no space beneath the Floyd | drawer. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "open drawer"
Floyd | >You bought the bed when you broke up with Sangita. The drawer was the Floyd | selling point: so functional! Now that it's about to go into storage Floyd | (well, that's what the Headmaster said would happen, anyway. Maybe it's Floyd | going to go into a pocket dimension or something. Who knows?) you're Floyd | feeling a bit wistful. Sangita was great, and you still pretty much Floyd | miss her. It's been a year, though, and you'd better get over it. Maybe Floyd | it's a good thing you're starting over in Scotland. There definitely Floyd | won't be anything there to remind you of her. Floyd | Floyd | Nothing inside, not even dust--no old shoe. Floyd | | Yuri says (to DavidW), "Thanks! Not very enlightening, unfortunately ;-)"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open wardrobe"
Floyd | >You can remember Grandma reading you the Narnia books; you used to Floyd | hide inside the wardrobe, behind her fur coats, and pound on the back Floyd | wall to see if anyone in Narnia, on the other side, could hear you. The Floyd | sound of the door creaking open brings it all back: the scent of the Floyd | moth balls, the feel of her papery skin, the heavy warmth of the coats Floyd | around you. Floyd | Floyd | No old shoe here, either. All this searching is doing exactly nothing Floyd | for your headache. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x table"
Floyd | >An old plastic-topped table. A bit wobbly. Floyd | | DavidW says, "hm. Maybe we should find an aspirin first."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "look under table"
Floyd | >You find nothing of interest. Floyd | | DavidW asks, "Where's the bathroom?"
djfletch says, "dunno"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x aga"
Floyd | >An ancient Aga, with the classic black top and white front panels, Floyd | rusty and unassuming. At least the stove is functional, and you use the Floyd | oven for storage. Floyd | Floyd | Actually, part of why you ended up taking this flat is the Aga. It's Floyd | sentimental, really. When you were a small child, your parents' house Floyd | had one just like it. Your mother never liked to cook--for her, a Floyd | family meal meant going round the corner for curry take-away instead of Floyd | actually sitting down in a restaurant--but whenever your grandmother Floyd | came to visit, she'd make the most incredible meals on that crummy old Floyd | thing. You can still practically taste everything--she did all the Floyd | standards, a roast one day, bubble and squeak the next, tarts and Floyd | scones and pies. Unfortunately, she never taught you any of it. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "exits"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x exits"
Floyd | >You can't see any such thing. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "u"
Floyd | >You can't go that way. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | >Your Flat Floyd | You've got a bed, a wardrobe, a table, and an ancient Aga to cook on. Floyd | One lonely broadside hangs on the south wall. The door on the north Floyd | wall leads to the rest of the building. A packed trunk stands in the Floyd | middle of the floor. Floyd | | DavidW asks, "Shall we head north?"
djfletch says, "let me just check the aga"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "open aga"
Floyd | >You open the Aga, revealing an old shoe. Floyd | | DavidW says, "ah"
djfletch says, "I don't know if this will teleport us straight away."
djfletch says, "try going north first perhaps"
DavidW says, "Portkeys in the books sometimes were timed, sometimes weren't."
Yuri says, "probably... let's explore first"
DavidW asks, "Did anyone clear the save counter?"
djfletch says, "I don't think so."
DavidW clears the save counter.
DavidW says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "cf1"
Floyd | >Enter saved game to store: Ok. Floyd | | DavidW says, "Just in case the rest of the building is a swamp or something."
Yuri exclaims (at DavidW), "Good thinking!"
DavidW says, "thanks!"
DavidW says, "Someone brave ought to test the north exit."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | >You get the sense that it wouldn't do you any good to change your mind Floyd | and go. Surely they wouldn't let a secret like, oh, the existence of Floyd | magic go so easily. Best to at least see what Hogwarts is like. Floyd
Yuri says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | >You get the sense that it wouldn't do you any good to change your mind Floyd | and go. Surely they wouldn't let a secret like, oh, the existence of Floyd | magic go so easily. Best to at least see what Hogwarts is like. Floyd | | Yuri says, "Hmmm..."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "grab trunk"
Floyd | >That's not a verb I recognise. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "touch trunk"
Floyd | >Slightly rough. Floyd | | djfletch says, "hopefully our trunk will magically come with us somehow"
Yuri..The portkey then? | DavidW says, "hm. I guess we can only hope the trunk somehow follows us."
Yuri asks, "maybe we should touch both at the same time?"
Yuri says, "as in: touch trunk and shoe"
DavidW says (to djfletch), "You found the shoe. I think you should get the honours of taking it."
Yuri says, "at least we have a saved game, if we bungle it"
djfletch says, "oh ok" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "get shoe"
Floyd | >As soon as you touch the shoe, it feels like someone's set a giant Floyd | fish-hook in your belly and started reeling you in. After a brief, Floyd | stomach-churning journey, you find yourself somewhere quite Floyd | different--and no longer clutching the shoe. You must have lost it on Floyd | the way. Floyd | Floyd | Dumbledore's Office Floyd | A circular room with a high, vaulted ceiling. It is filled with various Floyd | magical instruments, an enormous claw-footed desk, and innumerable Floyd | oddities--all of which have been pushed, higgledy-piggledy, to the Floyd | walls, and some of which look much the worse for it. An elaborate perch Floyd | stands forlornly next to the desk, with no bird seated on it. The walls Floyd | themselves are covered in portraits of important-looking people. A Floyd | spiral staircase appears to continually spin downwards--almost like an Floyd | escalator--at the far end of the room. Floyd | Floyd | Wait, what? Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x desk"
Floyd | >A heavy, claw-footed desk with a highly polished surface. It is Floyd | covered in chalked designs, strange and geometric. Floyd | Floyd | On the claw-footed desk is an iron bell. Floyd | Floyd | As you examine the designs, you walk around the desk--and notice a Floyd | piece of purple parchment, dropped nearby. You pick it up. Floyd | Floyd | You read: INGREDIENTS. To be carried by spellcaster. Floyd | The next bit is all symbols: Floyd | a dot inside a circle; Floyd | a crescent moon; Floyd | a female symbol; Floyd | a male symbol; Floyd | a 2 with a 1 intersecting its tail; Floyd | a female symbol with horns; Floyd | a curiously embellished lower-case h; Floyd | a circle bisected by a horizontal line; Floyd | a circle with a complicated, Celtic-looking pattern. Floyd | Floyd | No, really, what the fuck is going on? Floyd | | djfletch says, "magic! is going on."
DavidW says, "hm. I recognize the symbols. They represent both planets and alchemical elements. The dot in circle is sun/gold."
Yuri sun, moon, venus, mars, jupiter, mercury, saturn, earth...
Yuri not sure, what the celticy thing is
Yuri could be metals instead of planets as well | zarf says, "channel, please"
zarf says, "also ,I suspect we'll find helper texts in the game, since this isn't supposed to be a brainburner"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x bell"
Floyd | >A little iron bell with a slightly rusty clapper. It's lying on its Floyd | side, as though somebody hastily dropped it. Floyd | Floyd | You've got a sinking feeling you know what's going on. This is Hogwarts Floyd | School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. That was some bona fide wizardry Floyd | there, only instead of being on your trunk, it was on you. Okay. All Floyd | right. So the next step is to find Dumbledore. Why isn't he here? Floyd | | Jacqueline says, "Yeah, semi-colon, Yuri. :)"
Yuri gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, lead, ???. ??? | Yuri exclaims, "Oh bugger!"
Jacqueline says (to Yuri), "You're -- yeah."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x portraits"
Floyd | >Curious portraits elaborately framed; they are more like flat-screen Floyd | televisions than oil paintings, however, as their inhabitants are Floyd | animated. Most of them are sleeping, rhythmically breathing: "Dilys Floyd | Derwent, headmistress 1741-1768," "Phineas Nigellus Black, headmaster Floyd | 1890-1925." One is awake, reading a book: "Newton Scamander, headmaster Floyd | 1930-1939." You deduce that they are former heads of Hogwarts. Floyd | | Jacqueline exclaims, "But appropriate use of swears, given today's game. Good show!"
Yuri exclaims, "Sorry about that!"
Yuri exclaims, "And excuse my French!"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "ask scamander about dumbledore"
Floyd | >[Use TALK TO to interact with characters.] Floyd | | Jacqueline exclaims, "Zut alors!"
Yuri blushes | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "talk to scamander"
Floyd | >"Can you talk?" you ask the portrait. Floyd | Floyd | "Of course I can, what do you think?" he replies. Floyd
Floyd [1] Where's Headmaster Dumbledore?
Floyd [2] What are you? | ||
Floyd [3] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Do you know where Headmaster Dumbledore went?" you ask, trying to Floyd | figure out how to be polite to a portrait. Floyd | Floyd | He peers at you over the top of his book. "In my day we never would Floyd | have thought of such a thing as having a Muggle at Hogwarts," he says, Floyd | which does not seem to be quite on topic. "Particularly not one that's Floyd | as rude as you. You were late. Very late. So he thought he'd get some Floyd | business done first." Floyd
Floyd [1] Business? | ||
Floyd [2] What are you? | ||
Floyd [3] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >Ugh. Your head aches and now you feel guilty on top of it. "Business?" Floyd | you ask, but before you can say anything further, yet another weird Floyd | thing happens. A bizarre little man appears, floating between you and Floyd | Scamander's portrait. He seems to have come from the ceiling, Floyd | but--where could he have been, up there? Floyd | Floyd | Before you have a chance to say anything, even to exclaim in surprise, Floyd | he shouts in a singsong voice, "Oi! It's the new Muggly-girl!" He Floyd | dances around--surprising, how he can manage to dance in midair--to Floyd | hover with his feet just on the level of your nose. "I, of course, am Floyd | Peeves the Proper, King of this castle. Bet you're wondering what's Floyd | going on, aren't you? Eh-eh-eh?" The bells on his hat jingle. Floyd | Floyd | "Yeah, uh, starting with -" you begin, but he cuts you off. Floyd | Floyd | "There once was a lazy headmaster Floyd | who thought he could cast a spell faster. Floyd | But the corners he cut Floyd | slammed dimension doors shut Floyd | and now he's a missing spellcaster!" Floyd | Floyd | "Get out of here, Peeves," Scamander says. "I'll call the Bloody Floyd | Baron!" To your surprise, the threat seems to work: Peeves disappears Floyd | as quickly as he came. Floyd | Floyd | All right. So Dumbledore tried to cast a spell and everybody Floyd | disappeared, including him. That makes... well, it makes a weird kind Floyd | of sense. It seems like you have a couple of options--you could try to Floyd | fix the spell, even though you're not magical, or you could try to Floyd | figure out where you are and start walking home. Maybe you could find a Floyd | train station or something. Floyd | Floyd | Why did you ever think this whole teaching thing was a good idea? Floyd | | DavidW says, "Sorry about the textdump!"
zarf says, "hm, that's pretty accepting of us"
DavidW says, "But we found plot and goal."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "wake nigellus"
Floyd | >That seems unnecessary. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "talk to scamander"
Floyd | >"Um, Headmaster Scamander?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Yes?" Floyd
Floyd [1] Who precisely is Peeves?
Floyd [2] Who's the Bloody Baron?
Floyd [3] What are you? | ||
Floyd [4] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | Floyd | This has been fun and all, but you're pretty much ready to go home now. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "3"
Floyd | >"So, are you a person, like, behind a window? Or a real animated Floyd | person?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Excuse me?" the Headmaster asks. Floyd | Floyd | "I mean--you're not a hologram or something? You and the other Floyd | paintings?" Floyd | Floyd | "What in Merlin's name is a hologram?" he inquires. It occurs to you Floyd | that you don't actually know how holograms are made. What's that Floyd | phrase--'any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from Floyd | magic'? Floyd
Floyd [1] Who precisely is Peeves?
Floyd [2] Who's the Bloody Baron?
Floyd [3] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"So who--or what--precisely is Peeves?" Floyd | Floyd | "The castle poltergeist. I'm not entirely clear on why he didn't Floyd | disappear along with all the other ghosts," Scamander muses. "Perhaps Floyd | he's simply too annoying for magic to deal with." Floyd
Floyd [1] Who's the Bloody Baron?
Floyd [2] What do you mean, disappear?
Floyd [3] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"What do you mean, disappeared?" Floyd | Floyd | Scamander sighs. "You heard Peeves," he says. "The headmaster and his Floyd | assistant were making complex adjustments to the castle's wards. Floyd | Something related to your arrival here, as I understand it. In any Floyd | case, something they did went wrong, and off they went, Merlin knows Floyd | where. I believe you've already found their notes." Well, shit. Floyd | Floyd | "Um. Thanks," you say, to be polite. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "talk to scamander"
Floyd | >"Um, Headmaster Scamander?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Yes?" Floyd
Floyd [1] Who's the Bloody Baron?
Floyd [2] How can I get back home?
Floyd [3] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"So how can I get back home--a train or a bus or something?" Floyd | Floyd | "How should I know?" Scamander asks. "I've been a portrait since 1991, Floyd | and before that I never came here if I could help it. Being the Floyd | Headmaster stank." Floyd
Floyd [1] Who's the Bloody Baron?
Floyd [2] Never mind. | ||
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Who's the Bloody Baron?" Floyd | Floyd | "The only thing Peeves is scared of. I don't suppose the threat will Floyd | work long--any minute now he'll figure out that the Baron's not around, Floyd | and then he'll be insufferable." Floyd
Floyd [1] Never mind. | ||

Floyd | >"Explain then," you say. "Explain why you couldn't tell me before." Floyd | Floyd | "I couldn't!" she says. "It's the law - our law, I couldn't tell you Floyd | unless you were part of my family. Unless we were married. They Floyd | would've snapped my wand, Ally, you have to understand that." Floyd
Floyd [1] That's still a dick move.
Floyd [2] I understand your reasons.
Floyd | | DavidW says, "1" | |
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Well I don't," you say. "You should've broken the law and gotten Floyd | another wand." Floyd | Floyd | "I couldn't get another one," she says. "Breaking a wand means throwing Floyd | us out of the wizarding world. Forever." Floyd
Floyd [1] Being like me? A fate worse than death?
Floyd [2] That does sound horrible.
Floyd | | djfletch says, "I'm thinking 1 again"
DavidW says, "I don't like either choice."
jojo says, "I prefer the more diplomatic choices."
DavidW says, "I'm leaning towards 2."
djfletch says, "ok let's go for 2 then"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"Everything you'd ever known," you muse. "Although you can get along Floyd | in the Muggle world well enough, else we'd never have met... what does Floyd | it mean for you, otherwise? Being banished." Floyd | Floyd | "Legally speaking, you become like a Muggle," Sangita says. "It's like Floyd | becoming a child again. All your rights--stripped." Floyd
Floyd [1] So you can legally enchant me whenever? Great.
Floyd [2] So you'd lose your rights too, if you told.
Floyd | | Yuri says, "Yes... we've bene down her neck all the time, let's do a 2"
Yuri says, "oh... I'm still lagged..."
maga says, "willow can't you see / there'll be nothing left of meeeeeee"
Yuri says, "nevertheless... 2 again? best of two bad alternatives and all that"
DavidW says, "yeah 2, I guess."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"People like me are viewed as children in the eyes of the law, and you Floyd | would lose your status too. So you couldn't change it, not ever, Floyd | because you'd be out just like me." Floyd | Floyd | "Yes. And we hide the wizarding world from you. It isn't fair at all. Floyd | I've been trying to change it. I swear I didn't want to lie to you, I Floyd | never put a spell on you, nothing. But it wouldn't have done any good Floyd | for me to have my wand snapped." Floyd
Floyd [1] Don't try and make yourself out a rebel.
Floyd [2] I believe that you didn't want to hurt me.
Floyd | | Jacqueline says (to maga), "Thanks ever so for the earworm, darling."
maga says (to Jacqueline), "turnabout is fair play"
DavidW says, "I'm missing part of the story. I don't get where the legal/enchant me/rebel thread is coming from."
DavidW says, "I'm also confused that the text in our choices doesn't match what's said by the characters."
Jacqueline says (to maga), "Fair enough."
Yuri says, "It seems like this bit of the game is rather too black vs white. It could do with an occasional shade of grey in the form of a third or even fourth option in the conversation."
djfletch says, "if I understood it properly it's that Sangita wasn't allowed by magical law to tell us she's a wizard"
DavidW says, "yeah, I don't want to be a harpy or a doormat."
djfletch says, "but we're being sarcastic about her so-called magical law"
Yuri exclaims (at DavidW), "Indeed!"
Yuri says (to DavidW), "that's rather well put."
djfletch asks, "shall we continue being understanding and see where it gets us?"
DavidW says, "Anyway, I vote for doormat choices over harpy choices, if only to get a friend in the magical world once all-is-explained."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"I can respect that you were doing the best you could," you say, "but Floyd | it's hard. You have to know it's hard. How can I ever trust you?--Is Floyd | anyone else I know a witch?" Floyd | Floyd | But Sangita's face is closed and you know she's about to drop something Floyd | heavy on you. "She wanted you to know," she says. "Your grandmother. Floyd | Oh, surely you caught the hints! But she couldn't tell you either." Floyd
Floyd [1] Get out of my fucking sight.
Floyd [2] I need to think about this.
Floyd | | Yuri exclaims, "Second!"
maga says, "mm, to some extent my feeling here is that this is a situation with only two real outcomes, and looking for a third way would be mostly sugar-coating"
DavidW says, "Then we'll force feed her some castor oil."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >Somehow, you knew. You didn't want to admit it, but you really did Floyd | know. "I suppose I knew that," you say. Suddenly grief crashes in on Floyd | you. "Look, I think you ought to leave me alone for a bit," you say. Floyd | "Just go." Floyd | Floyd | She goes. She can't even look at you. You are alone. Floyd | Floyd | "Hello, my dear," Dumbledore says, swooping in just as Sangita swoops Floyd | out. "I take it that your conversation was not easy?--Well, it's only Floyd | to be expected. But now I would imagine you have a great many questions Floyd | to ask me." Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about where he went.
Floyd [2] Ask about the spell he was casting.
Floyd [3] Ask about Sangita.
Floyd [4] Ask about wizard laws about Muggles.
Floyd | | zarf says (to maga), "that doesn't require presenting one of these two emotional reactions"
maga says, "(also Alice is not precisely the world's most adept person at relationship-skills)"
zarf says, "admittedly 'I need to think about this' is neither harpy nor doormat"
djfletch says, "I'm thinking 3 or 4"
DavidW says, "I vote 2."
djfletch says, "we can probably ask him everything anyway"
DavidW says, "We probably can lawnmow this part, though."
djfletch says, "yup" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"What spell were you trying to cast, when things went wrong?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "I was modifying the wards," he says. Floyd
Floyd [1] The wards keep threats out?
Floyd [2] The wards keep people like me out?
Floyd | | Yuri says, "I'd say 1 or 2.... we've had plenty of Sangita stuff"
DavidW says, "2" | ||
djfletch says, "yeah" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"The wards keep people like me out?" you ask. You're not really doing Floyd | a great job of hiding your emotions right now. Floyd | Floyd | "I was modifying them to allow you in," he replies. "It isn't just Floyd | Muggles they keep out, either. There is evil in the world." Floyd
Floyd [1] So we're in a fantasy novel now.
Floyd [2] Magic could be really tempting to abuse...
Floyd | | DavidW says, "1" | |
djfletch asks, "what if we pick 1 and he says yes?"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Stop. Come on. This isn't The Lord of the Rings. You can't honestly Floyd | think--Look, I don't care if magic is real, Sauron isn't." Floyd | Floyd | "Not Sauron," Dumbledore replies. "Much more banal than that. Ah well: Floyd | ignorance is bliss! Perhaps an enterprising young wizard will sell the Floyd | story to a Muggle movie studio someday, and you can see it all on the Floyd | gold screen." Floyd | Floyd | "Silver screen," you correct automatically. Wizards are truly weird. Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about where he went.
Floyd [2] Ask about Sangita.
Floyd [3] Ask about wizard laws about Muggles.
Floyd [4] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | DavidW says, "2" | |
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"How do you know Sangita?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "I know all the students who have attended Hogwarts during my tenure," Floyd | he says. "In any case, our interests coincide quite often." Floyd
Floyd [1] Which interests?
Floyd [2] Was she always a pathological liar?
Floyd | | djfletch says, "hmm, dunno"
djfletch asks, "1?" | ||
DavidW says, "I worry that 1 will reveal the Gay Straight Alliance at Hogwarts."
djfletch says, "hah" | ||
DavidW says, "yeah, 1" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Which interests? Printing?" Floyd | Floyd | "Yes, the magical qualities of the printed book--but our politics also Floyd | align admirably," he says. "Miss Gopalan is, perhaps, an idealist on Floyd | the issue of Muggle liberation; but I respect her with all my heart." Floyd
Floyd [1] In what way is she an idealist?
Floyd [2] She can't be that much of an idealist.
Floyd | | zarf says, "I do not have a clear sense what ethnicity 'Sangita Gopalan' is."
DavidW says, "This is a weird conversation to have at the end of a scavenger hunt."
Yuri says, "I'd guess Indian"
Yuri says, "I'd guess possibly Sri Lankan"
Yuri says, "Oh... didn't intend to type "I guess" with that second line"
DavidW asks, "hmmm. 1?"
Yuri says, "not sure though... South Asian names aren't my forte"
djfletch says, "yeah, 1 seems ok. Don't know if it makes much difference here."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >You consider this for a moment. "An idealist?" Floyd | Floyd | "Miss Gopalan is a good Hufflepuff, interested in following the rules Floyd | and living her life in a rational and ordered way; but she deeply Floyd | believes that Muggles have the right to know about the wizarding world, Floyd | however inconvenient it might be for us." Dumbledore sighs. "I agree Floyd | with her that far--but she does not consider the wider political Floyd | climate, the lurking presence of Lord Voldemort and the danger he Floyd | poses. That is far more immediate than any long-standing injustice." Floyd
Floyd [1] Your view is totally wrong.
Floyd [2] Your view is sensible.
Floyd | | zarf says, "'Your view is -- Lord Who? I'm missing a thousands years of political background here.'"
DavidW asks, "[3] What's a Lord Voldemort?"
maga asks, "you're overlooking the most important thing: we were dating a *Hufflepuff*?"
djfletch says (to DavidW), "don't say his name!"
DavidW says (to maga), "ewwww"
Jacqueline says (to maga), "haha"
vimes says, "maga-disapproved"
jojo goes home. | DavidW asks, "so um, 1?"
djfletch says, "yeah, why not"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >You straighten up. "It seems pretty straightforward to me. There's Floyd | what's wrong and what's right. You're talking about lying to most of Floyd | the population. I can't tell you what betrayal -" Floyd | Floyd | "A natural Gryffindor," Dumbledore says. "Ah, well. My House is not Floyd | without its follies." You refrain from asking what a Gryffindor's Floyd | traits are. You probably wouldn't like the answer. Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about where he went.
Floyd [2] Ask about wizard laws about Muggles.
Floyd [3] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | DavidW says, "Newbie in the castle gonna tell you what's what, you old man."
DavidW asks, "sigh. 2?"
djfletch says, "yeah" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"So what exactly are the laws about Muggles?" you ask. "And how did Floyd | you manage to make an exception for me?" Floyd | Floyd | "The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy is the main thing," he Floyd | replies. "As for how you were excepted--Muggles with wizarding children Floyd | are already excepted, of course, and Squibs. So you see, it wasn't all Floyd | that difficult to convince them that you would be an excellent Floyd | candidate for the Muggle Studies position, and that it was not a Floyd | startling deviation from the Statute to inform you of our world." Floyd
Floyd [1] Aren't you way more powerful than a Muggle?
Floyd [2] How is the Statute enforced?
Floyd | | djfletch asks, "1?"
DavidW says, "I don't understand 1's implication."
DavidW says, "Of course Dumbledore is more powerful. What's the point of asking that."
djfletch says, "I'm assuming he's saying he's got to convince a Muggle of this - but reading it again it doesn't actually say that."
DavidW says, "And 'Squibs' aren't explained here."
djfletch says, "hmm, we might be able to ask both here anyway"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"How is it enforced? I mean--mind-wiping, wand-snapping--" Floyd | Floyd | You've hit a nerve. Dumbledore does not look happy. "Enforcement is Floyd | haphazard at best," he says. "Certainly Muggles are Obliviated. For Floyd | wizards, however, the punishment can be as light as a warning or as Floyd | severe as utter banishment. One never knows. All depends on influence Floyd | and luck." Floyd
Floyd [1] Obliviated means mind-wiped?
Floyd [2] So there aren't standardised punishments for wizards?
Floyd | | ||
jojo arrives, full of fun and funk. | djfletch says, "I'm thinking 1"
DavidW says, "1" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Obliviated means mind-wiped. It was on the contract I signed," you Floyd | say slowly. "Do you enjoy playing God? Muggles have laws Floyd | against--against brain-washing, and kidnapping, and everything." Floyd | Floyd | "Muggle laws do not apply to wizards," Dumbledore says, "and Muggles Floyd | have few rights under wizarding law. The law sees wizards as benevolent Floyd | parents and Muggles as ignorant children." Floyd
Floyd [1] Right now, any wizard can legally Obliviate me?
Floyd [2] You might have Obliviated me? If I hadn't signed the contract?
Floyd | | jojo says, "Sure does suck to be a muggle in a wizard's world."
DavidW says, "It's not always treacle tarts for wizards in a wizard's world either."
jojo says, "No, sometimes they have butterbeer."
Guest1 goes home. | djfletch asks, "hmm, 2?"
jojo says, "(Which I've always thought sounds hideous.)"
Jacqueline says, "It's not bad."
DavidW says (to jojo), "Well, pumpkin juice isn't my preferred tipple either."
DavidW says (to djfletch), "sure, 2."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"You might have Obliviated me, then? If I hadn't signed the contract?" Floyd | you ask, even though you know it's true, that he would have. "It says Floyd | something about 'hexing', too. Would you have hexed me?" Floyd | Floyd | "It was a risk," Dumbledore says, "but a worthwhile risk. It is only by Floyd | more contact with Muggles that we will ever begin to grow closer to the Floyd | Muggle world. We need someone like you at Hogwarts." Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about where he went.
Floyd [2] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | djfletch asks, "1 first?"
DavidW says, "yes" | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Where did you go just now?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Oh, there was a great deal to attend to," he says. "You did wreak some Floyd | havoc, didn't you?" Floyd
Floyd [1] Um... no? | ||
Floyd [2] So what if I did?
Floyd | | DavidW asks, "We wreaked havoc?"
djfletch says, "I don't remember wreaking anything."
DavidW says, "yeah, this sounds like an unwarranted accusation."
jojo says, "We stole a broom."
DavidW says, "Fiddlesticks."
jojo exclaims, "10 Points from Griffindor for that!"
DavidW says, "Choose 1. We're innocent."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"I don't think so? Not much anyway," you say sheepishly. He isn't Floyd | fooled one bit, but he smiles indulgently and lets you save face. Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | Jacqueline says (to jojo), "heehee"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"So what happens next?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "You have a choice before you, Alice," Dumbledore says. "I believe I Floyd | speak for the entire staff of Hogwarts when I say that we would be Floyd | honored if you choose to remain with us. Otherwise, I shall release you Floyd | from your contract. You signed it, after all, in a rather impaired Floyd | state." He touches his nose--and how did he know that? You never told Floyd | him! "So--will you stay at Hogwarts?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "%showpartial"
Floyd says (to DavidW), "No partial line. Bo-ring."

I believe that Miss Gopalan will Floyd | be waiting in the hallway, and she will be very eager to hear what you Floyd | have chosen." Floyd | Floyd | You take a deep breath. "There wasn't really any other choice to make," Floyd | you say. "I can't help Sangita fight if I can't remember what I'm Floyd | fighting for." Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | *** The End *** Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, or QUIT? | djfletch says, "hurrah"

DavidW says, "hm. I found the conversation at the end of the game awkward, but I liked the game in general, certainly."
djfletch says, "yeah, it was good"
borowski says (to jojo), "Especially since they were tied to the main story with the grandmother being a witch at the end."
borowski says, "Too bad I just got back to a real computer as it came to an end."
jojo says, "Yep, structurally it helps redeem the game which would otherwise be just a middle of the road treasure hunt."
DavidW says, "I suppose we missed a ton of things in the herbs book that we could've looked up."
jojo says, "It was very richly implemented, which is good for an in-game encyclopedia"

Floyd | >You put the iron bell on the claw-footed desk. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "put mercury on desk"
Floyd | >You put the vial of mercury on the claw-footed desk. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | >You are carrying: Floyd | a tourmaline ball Floyd | a prefect's badge (being worn) Floyd | a broom Floyd | a piece of type Floyd | a cloth book Floyd | a blue book Floyd | a long-handled scrub-brush Floyd | a book of herbs Floyd | a book of alchemy Floyd | a scribbled note Floyd | a ciphered book Floyd | a piece of purple parchment Floyd | a handful of yellow Jelly Babies Floyd | a Hogwarts brochure Floyd | a contract Floyd | a medallion Floyd | an identity card Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "put type on desk"
Floyd | >You put the piece of type on the claw-footed desk. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "put ball on desk"
Floyd | >You put the tourmaline ball on the claw-footed desk. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "put medallion on desk"
Floyd | >You put the medallion on the claw-footed desk. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "x desk"
Floyd | >A heavy, claw-footed desk with a highly polished surface. It is Floyd | covered in chalked designs, strange and geometric. Floyd | Floyd | On the claw-footed desk are a medallion, a tourmaline ball, a piece of Floyd | type, a vial of mercury, an iron bell, a tin cup, a copper cauldron Floyd | (empty), a silver hoof, and a golden toad. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "SAVE"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "cf10"
Floyd | >Enter saved game to store: Ok. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "redite"
Floyd | >For a moment, nothing happens, and you think that you've screwed up. Floyd | Then two people pop into existence. Albus Dumbledore is standing behind Floyd | his desk. Standing next to you - somehow, for some strange reason - is Floyd | Sangita. Floyd | Floyd | "Why, Miss Armstrong!" Dumbledore says. "I'd hoped you wouldn't be too Floyd | nonplussed at our little mishap. I assume that you fixed things Floyd | yourself? --Excellent, excellent!" While you are still gaping, he Floyd | rushes out the door. "Many things to attend to!" he calls, airily, over Floyd | his shoulder. "You've got things to talk about, I expect!" ...and Floyd | you're alone with your ex-girlfriend. Floyd
djfletch says (to Floyd), "talk to sangita"
Floyd | >"What are you doing here?" you ask flatly. Floyd | Floyd | "I can explain," she says. "Ally--I'm a witch." Floyd
Floyd [1] Well fucking spotted.
Floyd [2] Why didn't you tell me?
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Well fucking spotted," you say. "I didn't ask if you were a witch or Floyd | not. I asked what you're doing here." Floyd | Floyd | "Albus only told me you were coming today," she says. "I wanted to be Floyd | here so I could tell you about everything." Floyd
Floyd [1] Took you long enough.
Floyd [2] Explain, then.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Oh, so as soon as you knew I had found out anyway you decided to come Floyd | clean," you say. You're not even a little bit sorry that it comes out Floyd | sharp as can be. Floyd | Floyd | "I couldn't!" she says. "It's the law - our law, I couldn't tell you Floyd | unless you were part of my family. They would've snapped my wand, Ally, Floyd | you have to understand that." Floyd
Floyd [1] That's still a dick move.
Floyd [2] I understand your reasons.
Floyd | | djfletch says, "shout if anyone wants to try anything in particular"
djfletch says, "I'm just going to try being rude"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Well I don't," you say. "You should've broken the law and gotten Floyd | another wand." Floyd | Floyd | "I couldn't get another one," she says. "Breaking a wand means throwing Floyd | us out of the wizarding world. Forever." Floyd
Floyd [1] Being like me? A fate worse than death?
Floyd [2] That does sound horrible.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Oh, so then you'd be like me? What a fate. A fate worse than death, Floyd | honestly." Floyd | Floyd | Sangita looks uncomfortable. "Well. Legally speaking Muggles are--it Floyd | isn't fair, all right, but Muggles are worse than children. They Floyd | haven't any rights, practically." Floyd
Floyd [1] So you can legally enchant me whenever? Great.
Floyd [2] So you'd lose your rights too, if you told.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"So legally you can just enchant me? You can just fucking do that Floyd | whenever? What spells did you put on me?" Floyd | Floyd | "Only to protect the wizarding world from discovery," Sangita says. "I Floyd | don't like it either, but it's been the law since 1692. The Floyd | International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. Since we broke up it's Floyd | been--it was a wake-up call for me, Ally. I didn't ever put a spell on Floyd | you. I swear it." Floyd
Floyd [1] Don't try and make yourself out a rebel.
Floyd [2] I believe that you didn't want to hurt me.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Working from the inside, were you? Like a secret double agent? Ha. Floyd | Who else do I know who's been lying to me? I'm just not special enough, Floyd | am I." You snort, but you aren't finding anything very funny just now. Floyd | "You must've gotten a good laugh out of World of Warcraft, and me the Floyd | mage." Floyd | Floyd | But Sangita's face is closed and you know she's about to drop something Floyd | heavy on you. "She wanted you to know," she says. "Your grandmother. Floyd | Oh, surely you caught the hints! But she couldn't tell you either." Floyd
Floyd [1] Get out of my fucking sight.
Floyd [2] I need to think about this.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >You knew it. Somehow you knew it but you didn't want to admit it, you Floyd | just--"That fucking tops all," you say. "Get out. I don't ever want to Floyd | see you again." Floyd | Floyd | "Ally -" Floyd | Floyd | "GET BLOODY OUT!" Floyd | Floyd | She gets. You're left alone.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "4"
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"I still don't understand why you need the Statute at all. You could Floyd | turn us all into frogs if we got uppity." Floyd | Floyd | Dumbledore looks sad. "Witches were burned in the streets not so long Floyd | ago. We live longer than you do: we remember better than you do." Floyd
Floyd [1] Witch-burning? Come on.
Floyd [2] You live longer than us...?
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Witch-burning. Right. Come on. This isn't the Dark Ages. Sure, Floyd | there's some religious freaks, but you make it sound like Muggles are Floyd | savages." Floyd | Floyd | "Not just witch-burning," Dumbledore says. "We can heal wounds quickly Floyd | and easily. We can Transfigure lead into gold. We can walk around, Floyd | invisible. What do you think your Prime Minister thinks of that? He Floyd | knows about us. He's terrified of us." Floyd
Floyd [1] He's right to be terrified of you!
Floyd [2] You're right to be terrified of him!
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"And he's right to be terrified! You're terrifying! All of you! This Floyd | is mad. You can probably cure cancer and you're keeping it from us. You Floyd | enjoy playing God, I suppose." Floyd | Floyd | "I do not play God," Dumbledore says, but he sounds--troubled? It's Floyd | strange; he seemed so unflappable before. "I have had this conversation Floyd | before, believe it or not; and once we get to this point, there is not Floyd | much point in continuing. Only your own experience of the wizarding Floyd | world can help you understand." Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about where he went.
Floyd [2] Ask about the spell he was casting.
Floyd [3] Ask about Sangita.
Floyd [4] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Where did you go just now?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Oh, there was a great deal to attend to," he says. "You did wreak some Floyd | havoc, didn't you?" Floyd
Floyd [1] Um... no? | ||
Floyd [2] So what if I did?
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"So what if I did?" you say. "I got you all back, didn't I? It's not Floyd | as though I asked for all this to happen." Floyd | Floyd | "One should never sign a contract if one doesn't know precisely what it Floyd | means," he replies. "Why, last time I did that, I ended up the Floyd | foster-father of a hundred and seven baby Fwoopers. Enough to drive you Floyd | mad!" Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about the spell he was casting.
Floyd [2] Ask about Sangita.
Floyd [3] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"How do you know Sangita?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "I know all the students who have attended Hogwarts during my tenure," Floyd | he says. "In any case, our interests coincide quite often." Floyd
Floyd [1] Which interests?
Floyd [2] Was she always a pathological liar?
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"Was she always a pathological liar?" Floyd | Floyd | Dumbledore looks affronted. "My dear, the decision to lie to you--or Floyd | rather to exclude certain truths--was not and has never been hers to Floyd | make. One of the reasons she and I get on so well is that she is one of Floyd | the few wizards with a more radical view of Muggles than my own." Floyd
Floyd [1] In what way is she radical?
Floyd [2] Radicals take action, they don't sit around.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"In my experience, radicals take action, even when it's at a cost," Floyd | you say. "If they'd snapped her wand for telling me, it'd have been Floyd | worth it." Floyd | Floyd | "If they'd snapped her wand for telling you, they'd have erased her Floyd | memory of the wizarding world entire," Dumbledore says sharply. "She'd Floyd | forget you too. Everything. If she were lucky, she'd wander homeless Floyd | for awhile, then somehow find a job at a press--if they were kind Floyd | enough to leave her memories of how to print. No-one would ever know. Floyd | She wouldn't be a martyr; she'd be forgotten." Floyd
Floyd [1] You may be right.
Floyd [2] She's still in the wrong.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"I don't care," you say, strident. "It still wasn't right. She hadn't Floyd | any right to make me fall in love with her if she was going to be lying Floyd | to me. It's like --like a slave being forced to sleep with their Floyd | master." Floyd | Floyd | "Really," Dumbledore says, his voice doubtful and even a little Floyd | scornful, but he does not say anything else. Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about the spell he was casting.
Floyd [2] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"What spell were you trying to cast, when things went wrong?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "I was modifying the wards," he says. Floyd
Floyd [1] The wards keep threats out?
Floyd [2] The wards keep people like me out?
Floyd | | jojo says, "I find it a little painful to be so rude, even in a game."
djfletch says, "only our first playthrough is real, this one is just hypothetical"
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"Modifying the wards. So you mean the spells that keep bad things out. Floyd | What could wizards possibly be afraid of?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Other wizards," he says. "Muggles do not have a monopoly on evil." Floyd
Floyd [1] So we're in a fantasy novel now.
Floyd [2] Magic could be really tempting to abuse...
Floyd | | jojo says (to djfletch), "Ok, that's comforting to know."
djfletch says (to Floyd), "2"
Floyd | >"If there are wizards who--well, I suppose it makes sense that some Floyd | people would abuse their magic. But Muggles couldn't fight that. We Floyd | wouldn't have a chance." Floyd | Floyd | "That's one of the reasons people claim that it is easier to keep our Floyd | worlds separated," he says. "Our wars don't spill over into your world Floyd | as much. You needn't fear struggles you have no hand in." Floyd | Floyd | "Well, that's infantilizing." Floyd | Floyd | "Quite." Floyd
Floyd [1] Ask about what happens next.
Floyd | | ||
djfletch says (to Floyd), "1"
Floyd | >"So what happens next?" you ask. Floyd | Floyd | "Given the events of today, it seems unwise that you come to Hogwarts Floyd | as a Muggle Studies teacher," Dumbledore says, "which means that there Floyd | is only one path open to me." Floyd | Floyd | "Obliviation," you say flatly. Floyd | Floyd | "Just so. But if you like--I might consider asking Miss Gopalan to pay Floyd | you a visit, after you are returned to London. It will be dangerous for Floyd | her to defy the Ministry--but I suspect that today's events have Floyd | galvanized her against them in any case. So. Yes or no?
djfletch says (to Floyd), "no"
Floyd | Floyd | "Perhaps you are wise," Dumbledore says, his voice low and disappointed Floyd | nonetheless. "The Ministry will hold an inquiry, and it would certainly Floyd | all come out then. I had hoped..." Floyd | Floyd | "Only be thorough about it," you say. "I don't want to remember any of Floyd | it. I don't even want to remember Sangita if I can possibly help it. Floyd | Ignorance is bliss, isn't it? So put me back." Floyd | Floyd | And he does. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | *** The End *** Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, or QUIT? | jojo asks, "Aw, who in their right mind would pick that ending?"
Jacqueline says, "heh"
Jacqueline says, "Well, I think it was just a desire to see both."
Jacqueline asks (of djf), "You're in your right mind... right?"
djfletch asks, "maybe?"
jojo says, "Yeah, I know. I'm just thinking for people playing through the game the first time."
borowski says, "I like the game more knowing that the dialogue choices make a difference and it isn't just exposition."
jojo says, "Yeah, that's a nice part of it."
djfletch asks, "I wonder how late you can change your mind?"
jojo says, "It might be down to how many negative things you say."
djfletch says, "yeah. There's no very obvious place where you've committed yourself - it looks like it could be taking account of the whole conversation."
jojo says, "Also, what house do you think she should be associated with? As a muggle, I'd say Hufflepuff: the boring house."
djfletch says, "There was one point where Dumbledore said she was like a Gryffindor."
DavidW says, "But that part possibly also can change."
djfletch says, "oh, maybe"
DavidW says, "Shame the sorting hat is missing."
jojo says, "If she's outspoken in favour of justice, he says she's like a Griffindor."
jojo says, "Sangita is a Hufflepuff. I want to play the sequel where they get back together."
djfletch says, "and she starts teaching her Muggle Studies"
Jacqueline says, "Glad you guys had a good session today. vimes has been working on a new transcript process for me, and we're nearly there. I will try to get all the transcripts up once we're done, hopefully this week."
Jacqueline says, "Thanks for coming, everyone - next week: Apollo 18+20."
