NightFloyd Transcript:
Tenth Plague by Lynnea Dally
As played on ifMUD on November 28, 2012

Like ClubFloyd, the idea behind NightFloyd is that a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Unlike ClubFloyd, NightFloyd often takes on significantly larger works of interactive fiction, knowing going in that each one will take multiple sessions (but not always, as you'll see in this transcript). NightFloyd is also a bit more informal than ClubFloyd in that it's only announced on the ifMUD #clubfloyd bulletin board, and the time shifts around to meet player's schedules far more than ClubFloyd does. NightFloyd is organized by genericgeekgirl, aka Adri.

Below is a transcript of Tenth Plague written by Lynnea Dally. Tenth Plague was released as part of the 2011 Interactive Fiction Competition, in which it took eleventh place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting the ifWiki.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | > ABOUT
Floyd |
Floyd | "Tenth Plague" is a game set in the Biblical story of the final plague
Floyd | used to punish Egypt for keeping the Hebrews as slaves. While the
Floyd | story is usually told from the perspective of the victor, this game
Floyd | focuses more on the questionable morality of punishing innocents
Floyd | (children especially) for crimes they did not commit and could not
Floyd | prevent. This game comes with a commentary mode, which gives a little
Floyd | more insight into this short game. That mode can be
Floyd | activated/deactivated at any time with the command "commentary" or
Floyd | simply "com". (It also gives puzzle spoilers, so have caution.)
Floyd |
Floyd | The cover art is a high-contrast version of the beautifully sad work
Floyd | "The Tenth Plague of Egypt", by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1816),
Floyd | engraved by William Say, from the Liber Studiorum. The image is in the
Floyd | public domain.
Floyd |
Floyd | Many thanks to the beta testers: Russell Glasser, C.E.J. Pacian,
Floyd | Baldur Brueckner, Matthew Bunyan, Barry Williams, Sunioc, advicebanana
Floyd | and sweetandy. You people rock!
Floyd |
Floyd | This is my second IF game, and I look forward to more upbeat stories

Floyd | what was going on. It was a comic book villain, jumping up and down,
Floyd | screaming "I'm BAD, look at how I enjoy killing people!"
Floyd |
Floyd | Then I went with an unemotional tone instead. I treated all the

Floyd | removal. I wanted to let the horror speak for itself, unclouded by
Floyd | dramatic over-acting or even a shred of empathy. I made the cloud
Floyd | uninterested in (or blind to) material objects and visceral emotions.
Floyd | While it gave the cloud an alien feel, it unintentionally gave the

Floyd |
Floyd | So in the end, I stayed with the alien feel, but gave the cloud

Floyd | The biggest technical trouble of this game was coming up with
Floyd | reasonable obstacles, which in part accounts for its shortness. It's
Floyd | not easy to even hinder a god, but these people certainly did try. One
Floyd | of the things testers asked about the most was the bloody door ritual:
Floyd | what was the point of the ritual if you could still get attacked?
Floyd | Well, technically the complete ritual also calls for the household to
Floyd | roast and eat the lamb (Exodus 12:8-10). I took some liberties and
Floyd | interpreted that as the blood protecting the building, with the meat
Floyd | protecting the individual. Now this family hadn't eaten the lamb
Floyd | (having started cooking too late) and were therefore caught with only
Floyd | the house protected. It's definitely one of the more obscure parts of
Floyd | the story, but it gave me an opportunity to create a surmountable
Floyd | barrier, so I used it.

Floyd | Interestingly enough, what gave me the inspiration for this game
Floyd | was actually some other religious interactive fiction games. It got me
Floyd | thinking about all the amazing material this open source could
Floyd | provide, and how I could create a horror-themed Bible game, one that
Floyd | did not pretty up the texts or celebrate a triumph. I wanted to work
Floyd | with something tragic, something horrific, but still something
Floyd | relatively well-known. But it did end up being pretty horrific.
Floyd |
Floyd | This was a tough game to write, mentally. I had to first put
Floyd | myself into the minds these people experiencing the most horrific
Floyd | event of any person's life. I then had to take that heart-wrenching
Floyd | experience and dull it down into a somewhat clinical description to
Floyd | match the cloud's perceptions. There were a few times when I had to

Floyd | I made this room predominately female for several reasons. First
Floyd | of all, I wanted to remind the player at all opportunities that this
Floyd | was a different culture (one where polygamy was common and a sign of
Floyd | wealth). Second of all I wanted to address a gender unevenness. I
Floyd | didn't want to create one of those odd worlds where the men vastly
Floyd | outnumber the women, so I added another wife.
Floyd |
Floyd | But most importantly, with the inclusion of the older sister, I
Floyd | wanted to address the sexism of the curse. The plague is about killing
Floyd | firstborn males, so does that mean killing male babies supposedly more
Floyd | cruel than other-gendered babies? It seems ridiculous that killing
Floyd | female babies is somehow seen as less damaging to the parents. I would
Floyd | also have liked to have played with the technical bounds of this edict
Floyd | (would a transgendered FTM baby have counted? How about an Intersex
Floyd | baby?) but I figured that would take too much time to explain and
Floyd | might have detracted from the thrust of the horror. But, my queer

Floyd |
Floyd | I never wanted to rely on players to know all the bits of history
Floyd | about the plague/plagues, but one part of the story was too
Floyd | interesting not to reference semi-blindly. According to the story,
Floyd | this firstborn-death-plague was only to be a punishment if the Pharaoh
Floyd | refused to free the Israeli slaves. The Pharaoh had actually firmly
Floyd | agreed to allow the Israeli Exodus, but then Yahweh "hardened
Floyd | Pharaoh's heart" (mentally bewitched Pharaoh) and forced him to
Floyd | continue holding them captive so that "God's wonders may be multiplied
Floyd | in the land of Egypt" (so that God could show off) (Exodus 4:21,
Floyd | Exodus 11:10). This, I think, is the most cruel of all the firstborn
Floyd | deaths: imagine being forced under an enchantment to cause the death
Floyd | of your own child. I initially gave the job of heart-hardening to one
Floyd | last small wisp of the cloud's consciousness, but it was too much
Floyd | trouble trying to explain what was going on (and detracted from the
Floyd | events going on at the moment), so I dropped that.
Floyd |
Floyd | I also semi-blindly referenced the spoiling/looting of Egypt ("and
Floyd | ye shall spoil the Egyptians" Exodus 3:22), another aspect of the
Floyd | story that I think is not as well known. I gave that job to the cloud,
Floyd | even though it seems as though the spoiling was carried out by the
Floyd | Israelites, just to give the finale a perversion on the traditional
Floyd | Triumph of Riches adventure game ending.

Floyd |
Floyd | Now luckily for the babies of Ancient Egypt, this is one of the
Floyd | bible stories that is more than likely just an allegory (as opposed to
Floyd | say, the siege of Jerusalem, which can be confirmed by Babylonian
Floyd | records). Whatever you may think about the rest of The Bible is
Floyd | irrelevant, but treating this as any other historical event claim, we
Floyd | can check the Egyptian records and see that Egypt did not have a
Floyd | period of strife where they were beset by bloody water, lice, flies,
Floyd | death of all cattle, hail, locusts, frogs, boils, unnatural darkness,
Floyd | or a systemic death of firstborns (and the Egyptians kept very good
Floyd | written records). Surely this would have been important enough to
Floyd | write down, especially since in the story Yahweh claimed these
Floyd | miracles were to impress upon the Egyptians His awesome power (Exodus
Floyd | 9:14), but there are no such Egyptian documents.
Floyd |
Floyd | Interestingly, It's likely that even the large population exodus
Floyd | from Egypt never happened to begin with, as Egypt doesn't have a
Floyd | record of hundreds of thousands of Hebrew slaves (Numbers 1:46) living
Floyd | in Egypt for a period of 400 years(Exodus 12:40).* Furthermore, the
Floyd | archaeological evidence for the origin of the Israelites themselves
Floyd | does not support an exodus, but rather a tribal formation from within
Floyd | or near Canaan, as they have similar pottery and alphabets.
Floyd |
Floyd | There have been many attempts to rationalize and explain how the
Floyd | plagues could have happened historically/scientifically from people
Floyd | who have a vested interest in the story being literally true, but many
Floyd | of those attempts require stretches of the imagination, and a comfort
Floyd | with a lack of good records. But there's not really a reason to take
Floyd | those rationalizations seriously until better documented corroborating
Floyd | evidence is brought up (again, like the extra-biblical evidence for
Floyd | the sieges of Jerusalem). So we can rest assured that while this is a
Floyd | very scary story, it is likely just that - a story.
Floyd | *The Egyptians did not use foreign slaves to create their
Floyd | pyramids, but instead a labor tax was imposed on local workers during
Floyd | the farming off season.
