Stew says, "both sound dark"
Stew says, "in fact they all do, even the cuckolds and hornets"
DavidW says, "I think I'd go with Soul Thief. 'A cursed city' sounds like somewhere we can explore, and I love exploring."
Stew says, "yeah, Terrible Doubt sounds like one of those philosophical ones. They can be good, but I'm not in the mood for that today."
Stew says, "so Soul Thief it is"

Floyd |
Floyd | Foreshadowing.
Floyd |
Floyd | You've travelled a long way to reach this place. A cursed city, some
Floyd | call it, others a city of the unliving. A city where the Fallen One
Floyd | holds sway and certainly not a place visited lightly by those without
Floyd | great need to come here. But you have a need, and a great one at that.
Floyd | Somewhere in Foreshadowing lives (or, more accurately, hides) a man
Floyd | known as Taktaal, once a torturer from Galamenkaris, City of the
Floyd | Imperium, now a fugitive with a price on his head and the Steel Eyes
Floyd | of the Imperium on his trail. A hunted man.
Floyd |
Floyd | Just as you, in your own way, are hunted, though for entirely
Floyd | different reasons.
Floyd |
Floyd | So you have come to Foreshadowing to find the one man in the world who
Floyd | might be able to save you.

Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 1 Floyd | Floyd | Tales of the Soul Thief Floyd | An Interactive Fiction by David Whyld Floyd | Release 1 / Serial number 140720 / Inform 7 build 6G60 (I6/v6.32 lib Floyd | 6/12N) Floyd | Floyd | At the Gates of Foreshadowing Floyd | Exits: North (into Foreshadowing); South (away from Floyd | Foreshadowing) Floyd | Floyd | Before you rise the rusted gates of Foreshadowing, its towers and Floyd | fortresses hidden by thick walls. A long line of people, most dressed Floyd | in little more than rags and bearing signs of the Wasting Sickness, Floyd | are here to seek access to the city; an access given grudgingly it Floyd | seems, for the hulking guards at the gate appear to turn away far more Floyd | people than they admit. At this rate, it will take many hours to gain Floyd | admittance - if, indeed, you are allowed inside at all, which is Floyd | hardly a guarantee. Floyd | Floyd | But this is the only way into the city. The other gates are kept Floyd | permanently locked and warded with the kind of spells you don't have a Floyd | hope of bypassing - only here, at the southern most gate, might you Floyd | find a way inside Foreshadowing. Floyd | Floyd | > | Stew says, "hey look it's by another guy named David W."
Stew says, "Whyld instead of Welbourn"
Stew asks, "he's the guy you get mistaken for sometimes right?"
DavidW says, "Very rarely, these days."
DavidW says, "It only happens when new ADRIFTers visit the mud."
DavidW says, "But he's davidwhyld here and I'm dswxyz there to make it easier to tell us apart."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 2 Floyd | Floyd | > X ME Floyd | Floyd | You're younger than you look, but feel much older than you really are. Floyd | Being on the run, hunted by the inhuman Steel Eyes, ages you more and Floyd | more each day, and the strain of Soul Theft doesn't help. So far Floyd | you've managed to stay ahead of your pursuers, but you're sure it'll Floyd | only be a matter of time before they catch you. You, after all, have Floyd | to sleep; they don't. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 3 Floyd | Floyd | > I Floyd | Floyd | You are carrying: Floyd | some clothes (being worn) Floyd | an amulet Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x amulet"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 4 Floyd | Floyd | > X AMULET Floyd | Floyd | It looks like an ordinary amulet, which is a relief because it's Floyd | anything but. This was given to you as a gift by your mother on the Floyd | day you achieved your first SoulSteal, and now it's bonded to you by a Floyd | magic you don't fully understand, but which you're eternally grateful Floyd | for. This is all that keeps the Steel Eyes from finding you each time Floyd | you steal a soul, and all that stops their magic from tracking your Floyd | every movement. Drop it and it will return to you whether you want it Floyd | to or not. Damaging it is possible, although not easy, and you believe Floyd | that if it is ever destroyed you will die with it. Floyd | Floyd | For more information, type "SoulSteal". Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "SoulSteal"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 4 Floyd | Floyd | > SOULSTEAL Floyd | Floyd | SoulSteal: this is the ability by which a Soul Thief can steal the Floyd | soul from another person. Possession of this ability is punishable by Floyd | death, whether you use it or not. Floyd | Floyd | Assuming you're willing to take the risk, you can attempt to steal the Floyd | soul of another human being (SoulSteal does not work on animals or Floyd | inanimate objects) in the format: Floyd | Floyd | steal soul from {target}. Floyd | Floyd | For more information, type "soul". Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "I wonder what one does with a stolen soul."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "soul"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 4 Floyd | Floyd | > SOUL Floyd | Floyd | You have no souls equipped right now. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "I wonder if they're like magic spells or usable like coins or what."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x gate"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 5 Floyd | Floyd | > X GATE Floyd | Floyd | Thirty feet tall, build from thick lengths of steel welded together Floyd | with massive iron gates, the gates are as forbidding as they are Floyd | large. There are spikes protruding from them at intervals, and on each Floyd | is mounted a head, one a man, another a woman, the third a creature Floyd | with a fanged mouth and slits for eyes, the fourth nothing more than a Floyd | skull with tufts of hair. Floyd | Floyd | A clear warning, in other words, of what happens to people who try to Floyd | sneak into Foreshadowing. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW asks, "You were saying the *other* games sounded too dark?"
DavidW says, "And is this town really Foreshadowing? Looks more like Foreboding to me."

Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 6 Floyd | Floyd | > X PEOPLE Floyd | Floyd | All have the hungry look of people who have eaten only infrequently as Floyd | of late, and many bear the disfiguring marks of the Wasting Sickness. Floyd | None one of them looks healthy or in good spirits. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x guards"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 7 Floyd | Floyd | > X GUARDS Floyd | Floyd | Massive and brutish, and maybe not entirely human. One has tusks Floyd | protruding from his face, the other only one eye. Both wear heavy Floyd | armour and carry halberds and seem ill-inclined to let people inside Floyd | the city. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x wall"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 8 Floyd | Floyd | > X WALL Floyd | Floyd | Thirty feet tall, built from huge blocks of weathered stone, and Floyd | dented and pitted with age. A pair of massive gates are set into them, Floyd | the only way into Foreshadowing. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x head"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 9 Floyd | Floyd | > X HEAD Floyd | Floyd | Human and non-human, all in various stages of decomposition. A grisly Floyd | reminder of the fate that awaits anyone who tries to sneak into the Floyd | city. Floyd | Floyd | >

DavidW says (to Floyd), "steal soul from guards"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 16 Floyd | Floyd | > STEAL SOUL FROM GUARDS Floyd | Floyd | You focus your mind on the nearest of the guards, the biggest one, a Floyd | hulking brute with ferocity in abundance but lacking in wit (so you Floyd | hope), and then strike! Floyd | Floyd | There is no physical effect of using SoulSteal, but it can greatly Floyd | weaken the target, and the guard is no exception. He staggers to one Floyd | side, clutching his head, then seizes onto the wall to steady himself. Floyd | The other guard looks at him with concern - not, you imagine, due to Floyd | the guard being ill, but perhaps worrying that whatever he has is Floyd | contagious - and grunts, "What's up?" Floyd | Floyd | The first guard shrugs and seems to regain some of his strength, but Floyd | looks around suspiciously, peering at the people closest to him in Floyd | case one of them might have attacked him. He doesn't notice you at Floyd | all. Floyd | Floyd | You have gained the Intimidate soul. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x intimidate"

Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 17 Floyd | Floyd | > X SOUL Floyd | Floyd | You can't see any such thing. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "talk to guards"
Floyd ] At the Gates of Foreshadowing 17 Floyd | Floyd | > TALK TO GUARDS Floyd | Floyd | You push your way to the front of the line of people and make eye Floyd | contact with the guards. You don't say anything, simply make it clear, Floyd | without words, that very bad things will happen to them if they don't Floyd | stand aside and let you pass. Floyd | Floyd | One of the guards starts to raise his halberd, as if to strike you, Floyd | but the other, the one whose soul you stole a portion of, puts a hand Floyd | on his shoulder and shakes his head. Floyd | Floyd | The first guard frowns at his fellow, then at you, then slowly lowers Floyd | the halberd. Floyd | Floyd | "Get out of here," mutters the second guard nervously, and watches as Floyd | you hurry quickly into the city. Floyd | Floyd | As you do, the Intimidate soul fades away, its power expended. Floyd | Floyd | Press any key to continue...
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd ] Square of Heretics 18 Floyd | Square of Heretics Floyd | Exits: North, South, East, Northeast, Southwest Floyd | Floyd | Situated by the southern gates of Foreshadowing, the Square of Floyd | Heretics is the first sight most visitors to the city see, Floyd | purposefully so. Here there is a circle of spikes driven into the Floyd | muddy ground; impaled on each are people with the word Floyd | 'heretic' branded on their foreheads - traitors to Floyd | Foreshadowing, or perhaps just people who spoke out too openly against Floyd | the Fallen One. Floyd | Floyd | A bewildering array of streets lead away from here, some little more Floyd | than muddy paths, other wide thoroughfares. Looming over everything, Floyd | visible (so you have heard) from everywhere in the city, is Hell's Floyd | Reach, the floating citadel fortress of the Fallen One. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "I wonder if we should have stolen a soul from the crowd as well."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x circle"
Floyd ] Square of Heretics 19 Floyd | Floyd | > X CIRCLE Floyd | Floyd | Grisly ill describes this spectacle. You have heard of such things Floyd | occurring, but never thought to witness it yourself. In the flesh, Floyd | this is enough to make you despair at the evils perpetrated by your Floyd | fellow humans. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x citadel"
Floyd ] Square of Heretics 20 Floyd | Floyd | > X CITADEL Floyd | Floyd | You've heard of this place, but the reality is even more awe-inspiring Floyd | than you expected. A citadel, fully as large as a town in its own Floyd | right, floating several hundred feet above the streets of Floyd | Foreshadowing, casting everything below it into shadow. This is the Floyd | home of the Fallen One, the ruler of Foreshadowing. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW asks, "Is the 'Fallen One' Lucifer, I wonder?"
DavidW asks, "Which direction should we go?"
DavidW says, "(this is also testing to see if anyone else is actually playing)"

Lining one side of the street are seven Floyd | massive statues (badly worn by time and the elements) said to depict Floyd | the adventuring band who founded the city many hundreds of years ago. Floyd | At the base of one is a collection dish which people can place coins Floyd | into, and such donations will go towards the upkeep of the statues. Floyd | The dish is, currently, empty.
