ClubFloyd Transcript:
Hunger Daemon by Sean M. Shore
As played on ifMUD on November 23, 2014

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Hunger Daemon written by Sean M. Shore. Hunger Daemon took first in the 2014 Interactive Fiction Competition, and went on to be nominated for Best Game and Best Implementation in the 2014 Xyzzy Awards. You can learn more about this game, including how to download it, by visiting the IFDB: Hunger Daemon.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Jacqueline hollers, "Reminder: the Sunday ClubFloyd hiatus ends in half an hour!" DavidW says, "And yay, I don't have to think up a game to play."
Jacqueline says, "But have you already played what I wanted to play today>"
Jacqueline asks, "er, ?"
DavidW says, "well, yes."
Roger exclaims, "I haven't!"
Jacqueline says, "That is my main concern. I guess we'll see who shows up."
Jacqueline says, "Like maybe Roger will show up."
Roger says, "That slacker skipped the whole comp! Slacker."
oddgrue says, "so clubfloyd is on? assuming my kid managed to stay occupied i will be joining"
Jacqueline says, "It is. Twenty minutes yet, though."
DavidW says (to oddgrue), "yes, ClubFloyd is restarting today. And soon-ish."
oddgrue arrives, full of fun and funk.
DavidW arrives, full of funk, but no fun.
DavidW says (to oddgrue), "by the way, are you by any chance the author of Jacqueline, Jungle Queen! and Whitefield Academy of Witchcraft? (Because I loved those games.)"
oddgrue says (to davidw), "sadly no... despite YEARS of wanting to write a game, i've never managed to."
DavidW says, "ah. well. Perhaps we can help with that someday." Jacqueline asks, "Ready? Okay! Who is here for the Clubbing and the Floyding?"
says, "I am ready to Floyd."
DavidW says, "I am ready to Club."
Jacqueline asks, "Roger, are you in? oddgrue?"
JoshuaH arrives, full of fun, but no funk. Jacqueline says, "My one fear is that because NightFloyd already played these (I think... I need to post NightFloyd transcripts from during the ClubFloyd hiatus) that everyone but me will have played these."
Jacqueline says, "Everybody gathering to watch just me play a game would be kind of not the point (and probably pretty boring)"
vimes asks, "what, nobody's here to Flub?"
Jacqueline says (to vimes), "You can be."
Jacqueline says (to vimes), "Also, I'm glad you're here. Will you be around later today? Want to talk about which other comp games we can get to run on Floyd."
vimes says, "yeah, i'll be around"
Jacqueline asks (of Joshua,), "have you played Hunger Daemon?"
oddgrue exclaims, "i'm in, but will be off and on... i have a six year old trying to get my attention!"
inky arrives, full of fun, but no funk. JoshuaH says, "Yeah."
oddgrue says, "oops - forgot to talk on channel... i'm in, but wlil be off and on"
Jacqueline says (to oddgrue), "That's fine. Have you played the game Hunger Daemon? (Also, please speak on-channel by prefacing what you say with #clubfloyd)"
JoshuaH says, "I think the only Inform ones I didn't finish were Fifteen Minutes and Transparent."
Jacqueline says, "Timing"
Jacqueline says, "Roger, I may actually need you."
Jacqueline says, "Or we could play something else, but the author is here and it would be nice to play his game."
Jacqueline says, "At least, I think MrPatient is the author."
Jacqueline asks (of MrPatient), "Right?"
JoshuaH says, "But Hunger is amusing to watch, so whatever is okay."
MrPatient says, "Yep, that's me. But it's cool. Play whatever works"
Roger says, "whahunh"
Jacqueline says (to Roger), "Get in here. You and I are playing this."
Jacqueline says, "It won a comp. I hear it is good."
DavidW says, "All I played of Fifteen Minutes was one run-through where I did nothing but examine things and decided no way would I attempt to play it during comp conditions."
Roger says, "Okay; if I'm mysteriously afk, blame the offspring"
oddgrue says, "i've never played it"
Roger says, "But I'll try to keep tuned in"
inky says, "I'l play too"
Jacqueline says, "Yay people. Yay actual game."
PaulS arrives, full of neither funk nor fun. Jacqueline says, "So, it looks like those people who said they'd play are all here, so I shall begin."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "load sleepmask hungerdaemon"

Floyd | culting, on account of how your Aunt Sandy doesn't want any sacrifices
Floyd | in the house, and well, fair enough. Uncle Stu owns the building, so

Floyd | ( - About and Credits)
Floyd |
Floyd | Hunger Daemon is an entry in the 2014 Interactive Fiction
Floyd | Competition. There are a couple of short timed sequences where it is
Floyd | possible to lock yourself out of victory for a move or two, but it
Floyd | will be very obvious when this happens, because the game will end.
Floyd | Outside of that, the various "winning" endings should always be
Floyd | available.
Floyd |
Floyd | To initiate a conversation with a character, you can TALK TO the
Floyd | character, or SAY HELLO TO her, or ASK her ABOUT or TELL her ABOUT
Floyd | something. Use TOPICS to display conversation topics. Occasionally a
Floyd | character might respond to something not in her topics list.
Floyd |
Floyd | You can use GO TO to return to places you've already been. There are
Floyd | also a few other nonstandard verbs. I hope that they're obvious in
Floyd | context. Note: you might find yourself needing to INFLATE or SQUEEZE
Floyd | or REMEMBER some things.
Floyd |
Floyd | Thanks to Graham Nelson and Emily Short for Inform 7, and to Eric Eve,
Floyd | David Fisher and Wade Clarke for very helpful extensions. All praise
Floyd | to my testers: Sam Kabo Ashwell, Neil Butters, Bob Reeves, Gráinne
Floyd | Ryan, Andrew Schultz, and Steven Westwood. Any remaining shortcomings
Floyd | or errors in this game are wholly my responsibility. Lovecraftian

Floyd | > X BOOK
Floyd |
Floyd | It's the book that got your uncle started many years ago, when he came
Floyd | across it in a dig in Paraguay. It's at least a thousand pages long.
Floyd | A lot of the pages seem to have been inserted after the fact. You
Floyd | haven't spent a lot of time handling it, but when you have, the
Floyd | reddish leather on the cover has flaked off and stuck to your fingers.
Floyd | There's no title on it, and it's written in an ancient language that
Floyd | you still can't read, despite your uncle's best efforts.
Floyd |
Floyd | You lean over to have a peek at the section that Stu is reading from.
Floyd | Dagon's dingus! He's still on page 13! We're going to be here all

Floyd | Pantry
Floyd | This is where all the food would be stored, if the bistro were open
Floyd | and functioning. There's a big fridge in the corner and many dusty

Floyd | The Ark of Whatever -- Mythos names give you a headache -- is a large,
Floyd | ornate box, covered in raised pictograms in some ancient tongue. It's
Floyd | clearly very old, and somewhat alien-looking, and too big to schlep
Floyd | downstairs. It contains the great Heart of Something or other, the
Floyd | crucial object needed for your uncle's transformation ritual that
Floyd | takes place tomorrow. Or it did: the ark is open and empty.
Floyd |
Floyd | You run your finger over the raised pictograms, wondering how the hell

Floyd | Office
Floyd | This is one of those miserable windowless back rooms you find in a
Floyd | restaurant or retail shop. You can imagine the kind of boss who might
Floyd | lair here. He's got a mustache, maybe a hairpiece too, and wears a
Floyd | wide, earth-toned tie. He smokes, probably cheap cigars. He's loud
Floyd | and abusive to his employees. As the place is not in use, he's not
Floyd | actually here, but his presence lingers nonetheless.
Floyd |
Floyd | The office door leads back out east into the kitchen.
Floyd |
Floyd | Sitting on a desk is a small, boxy security system. It displays the

Floyd | The old bistro had ten tables and seated about forty. The chairs are

Floyd | windows look out onto the street, but they're soaped up so that the

Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sweet!" says Jeff. "Alright, dude. Showtime." He gathers up some
Floyd | crap from behind the counter and leads you downstairs, to the shrine
Floyd | of Great Cthulhu, peace be upon him. Jeff starts by drawing a
Floyd | trapezoid on the wood floor with a piece of chalk. "Hey, better get

Floyd | lights a candle on either side of you. He dips into a bag of, well,
Floyd | it looks like red sand, but is probably something like granulated
Floyd | Shoggoth nightmares. Wait, no -- the bag is from Petco. Anyway, he
Floyd | sprinkles that around a bit, then places the printout of the woman and
Floyd | her hairclip in the center, on top of the sign. He grabs your hands
Floyd | and closes his eyes.
Floyd |
Floyd | "OK, so now repeat after me: Ehye f'geb Tsathoggua wgah'n

Floyd |
Floyd | "I forget Tsathoggua vogon kayak golfing..."
Floyd |
Floyd | This goes on for much longer than you were hoping. Finally Jeff

Floyd | into the form of a street map. Wow, this is pretty bitchin'. You can
Floyd | feel power flowing through you.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Barry, get ready! Watch for the spark!" At this, the image and the
Floyd | hairclip are consumed in brilliant green flames, accompanied by thick

Floyd | Summit and Syndicate
Floyd | You're standing outside Mt. Zion Temple, which you've probably driven
Floyd | by eight thousand times, but never really noticed. It's a synagogue,
Floyd | I guess? It's certainly Jewish. There's a sign outside, with a blue
Floyd | Star of David, since faded to purple. The temple itself is a low,
Floyd | orange-brick mid-century modernist structure. Kowalski's supermarket
Floyd | is to the east, and the entrance to the temple is south. The
Floyd | restaurant is a drive to the southeast.
Floyd |
Floyd | Your Saturn is parked here.
Floyd |
Floyd | Streams of people approach the synagogue from all directions. They're
Floyd | dressed all fancy-like for the most part. Some carry brown grocery
Floyd | bags. Those with the bags are handing them to a volunteer standing
Floyd | outside a van parked out front.
Floyd |
Floyd | There are several St. Paul police officers posted around the building.

Floyd | Leah is too busy dying to accept the Heart.
Floyd |
Floyd | Blood begins to drip from the rabbi's ears as your uncle invokes the
Floyd | power of the crystal. You see figures all around the sanctuary
Floyd | dropping to the floor. "Make it stop," Leah pleads, almost inaudibly

Floyd |
Floyd | You couldn't have a conversation in this mayhem.
Floyd |
Floyd | Almost everyone in the sanctuary, except for you and your uncle, is on
Floyd | the floor writhing, or worse, completely still. Leah quivers
Floyd | involuntarily, her hands clutched around her ears, her eyes closed

Floyd | > DESTROY HEART
Floyd |
Floyd | Filled with disgust at what you're seeing, you have an idea: perhaps
Floyd | you can destroy the Heart before Stu can get hold of it. You put it
Floyd | on the floor and stomp on it as hard as you can. It's squished a

Floyd | much for that. You pick it back up.

Floyd | > BURN HEART
Floyd |
Floyd | You have an idea: perhaps you can burn the Heart! You rush the stage,
Floyd | and place the Heart over the open flame. The Heart begins to warm up
Floyd | a little, but you can see at this pace that it won't burn up in any

Floyd |
Floyd | (first taking the shofar)
Floyd | You leap over to the podium and grab the horn. Seized by a sudden
Floyd | flash of insight and pity, you inhale until you're full to bursting,
Floyd | and put the horn to your lips. You sound a massive, deep blast that
Floyd | reverberates against the walls of the sanctuary. You keep the blast
Floyd | going, a single piercing note, forcing the air from your lungs until
Floyd | they begin to ache. You look up, and see the congregation recovering.
Floyd | The horn's blast is drowning out the crystal! Leah slowly uncurls
Floyd | herself, opens her eyes, and sees you sounding the horn. She seems
Floyd | oddly calm now, and starts to crawl away.
Floyd |
Floyd | Still you blow, your face turning red, then purple, the same note
Floyd | sounding, shaking the very walls of the temple. You close your eyes
Floyd | as you expel the last bit of air. Finally, there's a cracking sound,
Floyd | and a pulse of white light. The crystal shatters.
Floyd |
Floyd | The rabbi stands, a trickle of blood running along his jawline and
Floyd | down his chin. "Tekiah gedolah!" he shouts, as the other
Floyd | congregants snap out of their fugues. Suddenly, there's another
Floyd | crack, and your dumbstruck uncle crumples to the ground. Standing
Floyd | over him is Leah, clutching a Torah in both hands. Her face is caked
Floyd | with blood, her dress dirty and wrinkled, her mascara running in thick
Floyd | black streaks down her face. She looks up at you and smiles. She's
Floyd | the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. Three Saint Paul policemen
Floyd | burst in with tasers and handcuffs, but frankly, their job has been
Floyd | done for them.
Floyd |
Floyd | "I knew you couldn't be all bad," Leah says, between strained breaths.
Floyd | "You were so gentle with my roommate's beagle when we brought her in
Floyd | with a scratched eye last winter. It was really sweet." At this, she
Floyd | throws up. Still, it's a nice moment.

Floyd | One year later. You stand under the chuppah on a warm summer day in
Floyd | Como Park. Sailboats and canoes dot the lake in front of you. The

Floyd | to your right, beaming and crying. Behind you are several dozen

Floyd | Sandy, Jeff, and some of the other guys from the cult. Yeah, the cult
