Floyd | Floyd | As each update is released, the story will move further back in time - Floyd | so the first release includes room 18, the second will include room 17 Floyd | and 18, the third will include 16, 17, and 18, and so on. Floyd | Floyd | This release is Room 18. This is the far end of Yesenia's journey, but Floyd | it's only the beginning of yours. Floyd | Floyd | Please press SPACE to continue.
Draconis pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd ] Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | The front door has been propped open with a rock, but there's no one Floyd | in sight. Yesenia kicks it out of the way - why doesn't anyone Floyd | understand security around here? - and swings her suitcase into the Floyd | familiar darkness of her apartment building. Two flights of stairs Floyd | later, she reaches the door to her apartment. Floyd | Floyd | It's been a very long day. It's good to come home, however briefly. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | During the day, the hallway's cool shadows provide relief from the Floyd | California sun. But at night, it's simply dark, because the scattered Floyd | wall sconces aren't close enough or bright enough to provide decent Floyd | illumination. Still, this is home, and there's nothing more welcome to Floyd | Yesenia right now than the sight of her own front door. Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia parks her suitcase beside her apartment door. Floyd | Floyd | There's a folded note taped to the door. Yesenia frowns at it. Floyd | Floyd | >
Draconis says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd ] Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | > Floyd | > I Floyd | Floyd | Right now, Yesenia is more concerned with what she doesn't Floyd | have. What she doesn't have is her purse, which is in the restaurant Floyd | office. Floyd | Floyd | It'll take a full hour to get back to the restaurant by bus, but Floyd | Camilla can drive her there in 15 minutes, if the traffic on 101 isn't Floyd | too bad. Floyd | Floyd | >

Floyd ] Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | > Floyd | > X SUITCASE Floyd | Floyd | It's a large blue suitcase patterned with pink and white flowers. It's Floyd | new, durable, and easy to spot at the airport. Floyd | Floyd | In better lighting, the suitcase would be truly hideous against the Floyd | red walls of the apartment building. It's one small reason for her to Floyd | be glad of the dark. Floyd | Floyd | >

Draconis says, "Oh..."
Draconis says, "I'm not really familiar with how this game works."
Jacqueline says, "Odd how, even though this has been short, she's built the tension well."
Draconis says, "Yes." | ||
Draconis says, "I like the atmosphere."
Jacqueline says (to Draconis), "It's a serialized game. So it's going to be 18 short games. The first two are out, so we'll play 17 next."
Jacqueline asks (of DW), "Is there anything you can think of *other* than going in?"
Draconis says, "Ahhh."
Draconis says (to Floyd), "x sconce"
Floyd ] Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | > Floyd | > X SCONCE Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia studies the flickering light irritably. She's pointed it out Floyd | before to the apartment management - how dark it is, how unsafe. Floyd | Floyd | Not unsafe for her, of course. (Not that management knows that.) But Floyd | what about every other young woman living here? Floyd | Floyd | >
Emily arrives, full of neither funk nor fun. | DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "We could try leaving."

Floyd ] Home Floyd | > Floyd | > E Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia starts to cross the threshold when an all-too-familiar voice Floyd | within says, "Welcome home." Floyd | Floyd | "Chris," Yesenia says. Ice forms in her gut, but her skin prickles Floyd | with heat. "What are you doing here?" She bites back her next words - Floyd | What have you done to Camilla? Floyd | Floyd | "Welcome home, Yesenia," the other woman says. "Or should I say..." Floyd | Floyd | "No," Yesenia says sharply, "you shouldn't." And she steps through the Floyd | door. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | *** Too many mistakes in a very long day. Or maybe not Floyd | enough.... *** Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT, or UNDO the Floyd | last command? Floyd | > | Jacqueline exclaims, "VAMPIRES!"
Jacqueline folds her arms and leans back in her chair. "That is my theory."
Emily says, "okay, that's alarming"
Emily says, "I figured she had superpowers or something"
Jacqueline asks, "On account of the comment about the hallway lighting?"
DavidW asks, "Do the name choices suggest any obvious locale?"
Jacqueline says (to Emily), "See Vampires *have* super powers."
Draconis says, "My mind jumped to vampires also though I don't know why."
Emily says (to Jacqueline), "that is valid"
Draconis asks, "So is that the actual end of the first room?"
DavidW says (to Draconis), "Perhaps the crossing-the-threshold bit."
Jacqueline says, "Camilla's a vampire name, but she's just our room mate. Unless she's 'the other woman' as well."
Emily says, "I notice that there's a "come in" note, which might count as a universal invitation"
Jacqueline says, "Also, now I feel like I'm going to be sad that 17 is before this, not after it."
DavidW says (to Draconis), "As I understand it, that's the18th room."
DavidW says, "We'll add a room/scene before that in the next version."
Jacqueline says, "Ice in the belly and hot on the skin is I think what made me contemplate vampires."
Draconis asks (of Jacqueline), "Isn't the vampire 'Carmilla', with an 'r'?"
Jacqueline says, "Dunno. Maybe."
Jacqueline says, "Actually, now that you mention it, DRACONIS is kind of a vampire name."
Draconis says, "I think Camilla was someone in the Aeneid though I don't know..."
Emily nervous sideways glances
Draconis says, "..." | ||
Draconis bares his fangs.
DavidW says, "Camilla was also someone in the Lovecraft stories, I believe."
Jacqueline asks, "So. 17?"
Emily says, "yes please!"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "quit"
Floyd | > Floyd | > QUIT Floyd | cheapglulxe quit with exit status: 0
Floyd asks, "That game over already? It was just getting good. Wanna play another?" | DavidW says, "yes please"

Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | Yesenia hefts her suitcase down from the bus. It's about three minutes Floyd | from the bus stop to her apartment, and she takes the distance Floyd | briskly, stopping only once to shove windblown hair out of her eyes. Floyd | Floyd | There's an easy cut across the grass, but Yesenia takes the sidewalk Floyd | instead, with the suitcase rollling along behind her. She rounds the Floyd | corner of the building and starts up the front walk. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | A wide concrete walkway leads around the three-story building and up Floyd | to the front door, flanked by ground lights on both sides, which shine Floyd | in response to the setting sun. On the right, regimentally spaced palm Floyd | trees provide an illusion of privacy for the west-facing windows. On Floyd | the left, there's a parking lot for the apartment, but since the Floyd | divider is all of six inches wide, the parked cars in the first row Floyd | rest their noses against the walkway. Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia parks her suitcase beside the building's front door. Floyd | Floyd | There's a bank of resident mailboxes set into the outer wall, just to Floyd | the right of the front door. The doorbells are on the other side. Floyd | Floyd | >

Because she doesn't have her purse. Because Floyd | it's in the restaurant. Floyd | Floyd | But... she pauses to consider the angles of the sun. There's still Floyd | sunlight touching the mailbox, which means she could open it with Floyd | sufficient focus. And it wouldn't be the first time she's Floyd | opened the mailbox without a key. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "Sneaky."
Emily says, "...right, okay"
Emily asks, "focus??" | ||
Emily says (to floyd), "focus on mailbox"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > FOCUS ON MAILBOX Floyd | Floyd | Shielded from sight by the building and a palm tree, Yesenia stretches Floyd | her awareness to the setting sun. The orange light warms her, just as Floyd | it warms the mailbox. Floyd | Floyd | The sun has power over the mailbox; its heat can make the metal Floyd | expand. Its absence can make the metal shrink. And she has Floyd | power over.... Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia focuses. The tumblers click into the unlocked position, and Floyd | she pulls it open. Floyd | Floyd | > | Emily says, "so definitely not a vampire, then"

She notes Floyd | Camilla's battered white coupe parked two rows back. Floyd | Floyd | > | Jacqueline asks, "Wait, what triggers us looking for Chris' car?"
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x camilla's car"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > X CAMILLA'S CAR Floyd | Floyd | I only understood you as far as wanting to examine Camilla's battered Floyd | white coupe. Floyd | Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x camilla's coupe"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > X CAMILLA'S COUPE Floyd | Floyd | Camilla's car is fairly new - a 2014 Subaru - but it looks like it's Floyd | been through a minor war. It always puzzles Yesenia how Camilla can Floyd | love driving so much, yet be so unwilling to go to the body shop. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "The card."
DavidW says, "We don't know Chris is here until we look at the playing card."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "x card"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > X CARD Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia picks up the playing card. Floyd | Floyd | It's a standard playing card: paper coated with plastic, with a blue Floyd | design on the back. Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia turns it over. As she expected, it's the Jack of Spades - Floyd | which means the Jack of Shadows. Floyd | Floyd | Chris, she thinks, and glances around apprehensively. Is Floyd | Chris already here? She always drives, because she hates the bus.... Floyd | .... Floyd | Floyd | >

Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > X PARKING LOT Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia scans the parking lot again, taking her time. She doesn't know Floyd | what Chris is driving these days, but she knows it'll be a cut above Floyd | the norm. Floyd | Floyd | And it is - a sleek, matte black car with a T-shaped logo on its nose, Floyd | sitting three cars down and barely a centimeter off the walkway. The Floyd | large black crystals hanging off the rearview mirror seal her Floyd | suspicions. Floyd | Floyd | >
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "hit car"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > HIT CAR Floyd | Floyd | (the sleek black car) Floyd | Yesenia takes a deep, centering breath and then slams her foot into Floyd | the black car's front bumper. She's reserving her strength; after all, Floyd | there's no need to punt it across the parking lot, and there would be Floyd | awkward questions if she did. Floyd | Floyd | The car launches an strenuous protest, flashing its lights wildly, Floyd | shrilling an alarm, and honking its horn - not polite little beeps, Floyd | but bewildered, angry blares. If Chris is anywhere around, that should Floyd | get her attention. Floyd | Floyd | >

Floyd | Floyd | There's a sudden clatter from the apartment building, and then Chris Floyd | explodes from within. Floyd | Floyd | Chris is tall and well-coiffed, as always, but her brown eyes are wide Floyd | with rage, and if she has a perfect manicure today, it's concealed by Floyd | her clenched fists. "What the hell are you doing? What the Floyd | hell are you doing to my car?" Floyd | Floyd | "Getting your attention," Yesenia says. "It seems to have worked." Floyd | Floyd | (To speak with Chris, TALK TO CHRIS.) Floyd | Floyd | > | Jacqueline says, "So, yeah. At some point we need to fight."

Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > G Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia lunges for Chris and then drops to execute a leg sweep. Chris Floyd | parries with a snap-kick and then falls back to recover. Floyd | Floyd | Chris protests, "Knock it off!" Floyd | Floyd | The sleek black car flashes its lights, honks its horn, and shrills Floyd | for help. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "I'm hoping that 'focus crystals' when Chris is here somehow zaps her badly."
Jacqueline says (to Floyd), "focus on crystals"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > FOCUS ON CRYSTALS Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia considers the black crystals. The sun is touching them, and Floyd | she's in the sunlight, but... what could she do with them, except Floyd | damage the car? There are easier ways to damage the car. Floyd | Floyd | The sleek black car flashes its lights, honks its horn, and shrills Floyd | for help. Floyd | Floyd | Chris touches something in her jacket pocket, and the car obediently Floyd | shuts up. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "hmph."
Jacqueline asks, "Why didn't she do that earlier?"

Jacqueline says, "Well, I know. Instead we had that conversation with the car alarm going off the whole time."
Emily says (to floyd), "focus on chris"
Floyd ] Tradewind Apartments - Front Walk Floyd | > Floyd | > FOCUS ON CHRIS Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia reaches her mind toward the sun. It's setting rapidly, but Floyd | there's still enough light... and she seizes that light and focuses Floyd | upon Chris. She doesn't want to hurt her - but she closes her power Floyd | all around her. There's just enough vibration leaking through for Floyd | Chris to know what's happening. Floyd | Floyd | Chris freezes immediately. "Think about what you're doing," she says Floyd | in a tight voice. Floyd | Floyd | "I thought about it," Yesenia says. "And I want you to go away. And Floyd | leave me alone. Now." She waits a few breaths longer, to make Floyd | sure Chris gets the point, and then releases the power. Floyd | Floyd | Chris glares at her, but then she goes to the car. A door handle Floyd | extrudes as Chris reaches for it, and she gets inside the car. Floyd | Floyd | Yesenia watches the sleek black car back up, and she watches it leave Floyd | the parking lot, and she keeps watching until it vanishes down the Floyd | road. Floyd | Floyd | > | Emily says, "oho"
Emily asks, "so do we go inside now?"
DavidW says, "I guess so."
Emily says (to floyd), "in"
Floyd | > Floyd | > IN Floyd | Floyd | The front door has been propped open with a rock, but there's no one Floyd | in sight. Yesenia kicks it out of the way - why doesn't anyone Floyd | understand security around here? - and swings her suitcase into the Floyd | familiar darkness of her apartment building. Two flights of stairs Floyd | later, she reaches the door to her apartment. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Please press SPACE to continue.
Emily pushes the green 'space' button.
Floyd ] Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | Floyd | Tradewinds Apartments - Hallway Floyd | During the day, the hallway's cool shadows provide relief from the Floyd | California sun. But at night, it's simply dark, because the scattered Floyd | wall sconces aren't close enough or bright enough to provide decent Floyd | illumination. It couldn't be a better environment for the Jack of Floyd | Shadows if someone had planned it that way. Yesenia never realized Floyd | that before, and she feels sick at the idea. Floyd | Floyd | The door of Yesenia's apartment stands wide open. There's a folded Floyd | note taped to it. Floyd | Floyd | >

DavidW says, "yes it does"
Emily asks, "are those the only two episodes out yet?"
Jacqueline says, "So far, yeah."
Jacqueline says, "As of this morning."
