ClubFloyd Transcript:
Untold Riches by Jason Ermer
As played on ifMUD on January 17, 2016

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Untold Riches written by Jason Ermer. It took eighth place in the 2015 Interactive Fiction Competition. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | You were reluctant to undertake another adventure with Professor
Floyd | d'Squarius, especially after the last near-catastrophe. Escaping from
Floyd | the Tomb of the Screaming Mummies had been treacherous enough, but
Floyd | then to have to go back inside because the professor lost his keys in
Floyd | some snake pit? Frankly, you had begun to question whether his
Floyd | treasure hunts were worth it.
Floyd |
Floyd | But the professor spoke persuasively about this new quest -- "for
Floyd | untold riches!" he claimed -- and, in the end, you agreed to join the
Floyd | expedition. Since then, things have gone exactly the way they always
Floyd | do: horribly.
Floyd |
Floyd | You tried to tell the professor that bringing a harpoon into an
Floyd | inflatable lifeboat was a bad idea. But, like always, he dismissed
Floyd | your objections with the usual "you're just the teenage sidekick"
Floyd | line. And now YOU are the one stranded on a remote tropical island
Floyd | with no clear way of getting back to civilization.
Floyd |
Floyd | And the amazing treasure you were originally seeking? The professor
Floyd | never explained precisely what it was.

Floyd |
Floyd | You are the young assistant to Professor Edsger d'Squarius,
Floyd | adventurer-archaeologist.
Floyd |
Floyd | You and the professor have been through a lot together. You bravely
Floyd | charted the Grave of the Headless Vikings (at least until the swamp
Floyd | gases started to make you hallucinate). You ventured into the secret
Floyd | network of catacombs beneath Stonehenge in search of the Lost Codex of
Floyd | Zethar the Druid (it's still lost; you never found it). You have even
Floyd | seen the summit of Mount Everest (from a distance).
Floyd |
Floyd | And every time the professor has gotten into some bizarre or dangerous
Floyd | predicament (which is most of the time), you've been there to bail him
Floyd | out.

Floyd | You open the waterproof case, revealing the professor's treasure map!
Floyd |
Floyd | When the pirates were starting to close in, you tried to convince the
Floyd | professor that you should be the one to carry both the map and the
Floyd | key. Instead, the professor took the map himself and, inexplicably,
Floyd | tied the key to Aziz's leg. He put you in charge of the emergency kit:
Floyd | the whistle (which you're wearing) and the beacon (which seems to be
Floyd | missing).
Floyd |
Floyd | The fact that the map case has washed up on the beach might indicate
Floyd | bad news for the professor, maybe even worse than that time he was
Floyd | almost devoured by man-eating spiders in the Shrine of the Cursed
Floyd | Knights.

Floyd |
Floyd | (first removing the map from the waterproof case)
Floyd | The sheet of yellowing parchment shows the outline of an island,
Floyd | hand-drawn in black ink. Most of the terrain is just sketched in, but
Floyd | the northwest region is mapped out in great detail and shows some
Floyd | unusual red symbols.
Floyd |
Floyd | It looks a little like the map the professor had that time you drove a
Floyd | dog sled through the arctic in search of the lost city of
Floyd | Tuktuyaaqtuuq. That's probably just a coincidence, though.

Floyd ] About "Untold Riches"
Floyd | Untold Riches has been developed for use during the 2015-2016 school
Floyd | year as part of an interdisciplinary curriculum for the middle grades
Floyd | on computer programming and creative writing.
Floyd |
Floyd | Gameplay design principles were derived from the rules of
Floyd | IFBeginnersComp ([LINK]), in
Floyd | particular: (1) The initial goal should be clear from early on. (2)
Floyd | The puzzles should be fair and well-clued. (3) The world should be
Floyd | thoroughly implemented (no unwinnable states, good coverage of scenery
Floyd | and synonyms).
Floyd |
Floyd | Implementation design principles were based on the idea that the
Floyd | source code will be discussed as novice programmers learn to create
Floyd | their own games. The code should therefore aim to build game elements
Floyd | using the simplest implementation and as much "entry level" Inform 7
Floyd | functionality as possible.

Floyd | The beach becomes more sandy to the northwest and to the west, a large

Floyd | This room is at the very top of the island's lighthouse. The walls of
Floyd | this octagonal room are all made of glass, and you have a panoramic

Floyd |
Floyd | Fortunately, it is Captain Atlee's ship and within an hour or two, you
Floyd | find yourself safely back among her crew. You also find yourself
Floyd | reunited with Professor d'Squarius!
Floyd |
Floyd | "You found it!" he cries when he sees you holding the amazing
Floyd | treasure. "Fascinating," he says as he studies the piece. "I had read
Floyd | about it having handles. But why would it need so many?"
Floyd |
Floyd | Back in his cabin, the professor tucks the amazing treasure into a
Floyd | padded crate and tells the story of how, after the lifeboat deflated,
Floyd | he got caught in a current that carried him away from the island. At
Floyd | some point he was spotted and scooped from the sea by Atlee, who had
Floyd | managed to escape the pirates with her skillful maneuvering.
Floyd |
Floyd | "While you were away, I had a look at that." He gestures to one of
Floyd | several maps piled up on the table. The parchment shows a maze of
Floyd | twisty little passages, all alike. "Seems like there's loads of good
Floyd | stuff squirreled away in there."
Floyd |
Floyd | The story of what happens next -- your confusing trek through that
