Christian_vanderBoom arrives, full of funk, but no fun.
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "Hi DavidW. Is there a show this afternoon?"
DavidW says, "I didn't see anyone here so I started up Tree and Star."
DavidW says, "I haven't gotten far into it yet and can restart if you like."
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "Good, is there a way to recap last lines somehow?"
Christian_vanderBoom says, "or just restart.."
DavidW says, "Yes, @recap toyshop"
DavidW says, "If we're doing a proper ClubFloyd, we'll need to talk on the #clubfloyd channel instead of in the room." | Christian_vanderBoom says, "I see"
DavidW asks, "Should I restart the game, then?"
Christian_vanderBoom says, "yes, why not"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "restart"
Floyd | > Floyd | > RESTART Floyd | Floyd | Are you sure you want to restart (YES or NO)?

Floyd | Floyd | > | Christian_vanderBoom asks, "is transcript on?"
DavidW says, "The first bit is the Storyteller talking, so I was just examining things."
DavidW says, "Yes, Perry does the transcription."
DavidW says, "Jacqueline left a bb post saying she'd set him up for today."
asks, "Do you know how to give commands to Floyd?"
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "you are just telling things to him by 'say'?"
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "is Perry some robot?"
DavidW says, "No. There's a f command that's a shortcut. So I'd type 'f x veritas', for example, which means ..Floyd x veritas."
DavidW says, "Perry himself is a bot account, yes."
Christian_vanderBoom says, "okay"
DavidW says, "As is Floyd, of course."
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "it's first Hugo game I encounter, only Inform and TADS so far. Is it similar to them?"
DavidW says, "Hugo is similar, yes. Mostly like Inform 6 but more likely to have graphics."
says, "Getting back to Floyd, you can also use > instead of f, if you like, before your command."
says, "If you need to push space or push return, there's special space and return buttons in the toyshop to send those characters to Floyd."
Christian_vanderBoom says, "gotcha"
Christian_vanderBoom asks, "is Waldo yet another NPC?"
DavidW says, "Waldo is sort of a Floyd clone, but no one ever uses Waldo these days, and I'm unsure if he's even supported."
DavidW says, "I don't remember if anyone's used Waldo in the last five years."
Ellison arrives, full of neither funk nor fun. | DavidW says, "hi Ellison"
Ellison says, "hey hey"
DavidW asks (of Ellison), "You can probably answer any Hugo questions, right?"
Jacqueline says, "Oh dear. I forgot you all changed time last week. I was, however, just coming to let you all know that I am still in the process of moving, and it looks like you have everything in hand."
DavidW says, "hi Jacqueline!"
Ellison says (to DW), "probably"
Jacqueline exclaims, "Hello, DW!"
DavidW asks (of Jacqueline), "You're moving from Hawaii to Hawaii, right?"
Jacqueline exclaims, "Anyway, I can't find my laptop cable, so I probably oughtta go. Have fun!"
Ellison says, "you too"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "I'm moving about a half a mile, yes. :)"
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "heh. Okay. Catch you later."
Jacqueline says, "Which is why it's taking so long. We are moving very much on the cheap."
Jacqueline exclaims, "Bye!"
Christian_vanderBoom says, "we are not far into it, maybe just <100 lines to recap"
says (to Christian), "anyway, when you're ready, I'd like you to give commands to Floyd so you're comfortable doing it."

Christian_vanderBoom says, "in this case, amica"
DavidW says, "I've never heard that phrase."
Christian_vanderBoom says, "it's by Aristotle, "Plato is my friend but the Truth is more of a friend" - when they had disagreement"

DavidW says, "This is as far as I got when you entered the toyshop."
DavidW says, "I'd probably examine the men and hope someone drops some interesting trinket."
Christian_vanderBoom says, "Vertias yelps - this is why I prefer square brackets around nouns when I write ;-)"
DavidW asks, "ah, because of the misspelling?"
DavidW says, "I didn't even notice that."
Christian_vanderBoom says, "yes, so that Inform7 would complain about unknown substitution..."
Christian_vanderBoom says (to Floyd), "x men"

"That arrogance is not dead, I Floyd | see," he says in a low voice, soft but dangerous. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "Only Inform 7 does that square bracket thing. Floyd ] Instructions Floyd | Tree and Star is a story-based work of interactive fiction. Floyd | If you are not already familiar with interactive fiction or text Floyd | adventures (as they are more traditionally known), be advised that Floyd | this game probably takes a lot of the conventions and stereotypes of Floyd | the current mainstream IF community for granted, and therefore may not Floyd | be well suited for someone not already familiar with those Floyd | conventions. However, please feel welcome to try it. Theoretically, Floyd | all you need to know is that at the command prompt (>), you type a Floyd | simple command for the player character to follow, in the form of VERB Floyd | OBJECT, such as "TAKE LAMP" or "UNLOCK DOOR" or "ACTIVATE WARP DRIVE." Floyd | Good luck; you'll need it. Floyd | Floyd | Players already familiar with interactive fiction mainly need to know Floyd | that the command TALK TO is required in order to complete this game. Floyd | The command does not necessarily assimilate all other commands for NPC Floyd | interaction. Specifically, it may be necessary to hand an object over Floyd | to an NPC with the command GIVE. Issuing specific orders to NPCs is Floyd | not implemented. There are also some non-standard verbs, mostly Floyd | related to computer activities. Floyd | Floyd | There are three mutually-exclusive paths through this game, although Floyd | each path does not necessarily correspond to a unique ending. One of Floyd | the paths is shorter and easier than the other two and is considered Floyd | less satisfactory. Although this game is technically not Floyd | "unwinnable," it is possible to become locked out of the two better Floyd | endings. Floyd | Floyd | Press a key to continue... | DavidW says, "ok, I'm back"
Christian_vanderBoom pushes the green 'space' button.

The data could Floyd | have come from anywhere in the entire Fleet. Floyd | Unable to download the file directly, you connect your datapad Floyd | into the port where the workstation terminal is mounted and carefully Floyd | copy over the entire active memory of the workstation. You preserve Floyd | the curious symbols by saving them in your editing app. Too tired and Floyd | distracted to do more work for the time being, you turn off the Floyd | terminal and disconnect the datapad. Floyd | MISSION LOG11.24.61.1300 (median statistical date approximation)
Floyd |
Floyd | There has been no update to the mission log for 24 years, as the
Floyd | situation has not changed. Since the death of Captain Iero, the
Floyd | yonger generation raised by the military has formed a militia and has
Floyd | seized control. The bridge has been closed off. Study of the cosmic
Floyd | radiation is being officially terminated, although most research was
Floyd | abandoned long ago.
Floyd |
Floyd | It is my belief that the radiation is intrinsically tied to the
Floyd | anomaly that overtook us, that it may hold the key to our deliverance.
Floyd | A synopsis of the knowledge acquired about the radiation through
Floyd | research and about the circumstances that lead to our present
Floyd | situation follows.
Floyd |
Floyd | The emissions are similar to the cosmic noise left over from the birth
Floyd | of the universe, but more intense and focused in a single vector, as
Floyd | if it were a transmitted signal. The radiation spans the entire
Floyd | electromagnetic spectrum. It must also run much deeper than the known
Floyd | spectrum, because dark matter distortions were registered in
Floyd | frequencies corresponding to the emissions.
Floyd |
Floyd | We first discovered the signal emanating from the exact same vector in
Floyd | which the ancient artifact had been travelling before it was lost,
Floyd | originating from an unknown point outside of the galaxy. This is too
Floyd | vastly improbable to be coincidental. We do not know what happened to
Floyd | this artifac, which has served as our beacon, leading us to and in
Floyd | this journey in the dark. Nor do we know the relationship between the
Floyd | artificat and the radiation. All we know is that when we synchronized
Floyd | our propulsion drives with the frequency of the signal, the stars
Floyd | disappeared from the viewports, and our navigation systems failed.
Floyd | Our propulsion system was functioning until the photon generators were
Floyd | salvaged 8 years ago, but attempts to travel through this void have
Floyd | yielded no results, as there is no frame of reference to determine
Floyd | motion.
Floyd |
Floyd | I expect that this will be the final entry in the mission log. This
Floyd | file will be added to the bios of the system synchronization network,
Floyd | to be displayed whenever the network is activated. It is my hope that
Floyd | the next generation will one day renew the study of the emissions, and
Floyd | that our descendents will one day find a way to return to normal
Floyd | space. Good luck, and God speed -- to you and to those whom we left
Floyd | behind.

Floyd | The bridge has been undergoing restoration, the best scientists,

Some thought that the stars were no more than a story Floyd | told to ignorant children before sleep rotation. Most of those who Floyd | knew that the Heavens really had once existed thought that the stars Floyd | had actually vanished altogether. In our arrogance, we allowed Floyd | ourselves to believe that we had no need for the stars. The Council Floyd | declared that we were the only light, that our Fleet was the entire Floyd | universe. Floyd | As a young Systems Tech on the Galaxy, Chronos saw the Floyd | ancient systems that had long since been shut away or ransacked. He Floyd | dedicated his life to finding out the true purpose of the Fleet, of Floyd | learning all he could about the Ancestors. Floyd | He was imprisoned several times by the Militia and was tortured at the Floyd | order Council in an attempt to make him recant. He and his family Floyd | were threatened, his property confiscated, his name maligned. No Floyd | matter what was done to him, he never stopped insisting that the Floyd | Heavens were real, until he was proven right beyond all possibility of Floyd | denial. Floyd | "The stars reappeared at last, after a hundred generations had Floyd | lived died without them. But sadly, our foolish arrogance is so great Floyd | that we very soon forgot the Ancestors once again, and we went on Floyd | living as if the Fleet itself were our only purpose. Chronos gave his Floyd | life so that we could have evidence to hold on to, so that we can Floyd | believe that we came from a better place and are still seeking a Floyd | better existence. Floyd | "Be sure that we will forget again, because we are always Floyd | devouring ourselves in our arrogance. DavidW says, "heh. That helps."
Ellison says (to Genevieve), "you should play 'the Apprentice' some time. it has plenty of Monty Python jokes (although they're mostly the obvious ones)."
Genevieve says, "I got a bit over-excited when I found that on the IF archive. Phoned up a friend and made her download it too. And okay, sounds good. I will have to check that out."
Genevieve says, "I am so grateful to have found this place and Floyd. I played elusions in the Toyshop all by my lonesome the other night. I unfortunately needed the help of a solution because my puny brain couldn't figure out how to solve all the puzzles, but at least I was able to finish the game this time. When I had it for Frotz aeons ago, I never figured out how. :-) I could find an Inform interpreter that works with my screen reader--I'm sure there is one--but my MUD client actually allows me to copy and paste, which an Inform client probably would not, and the output is generated in such a way that I don't have to fiddle with my screen reader's review cursor (which I know i would have to do in something like Winfrotz)."
Ellison says, "some interpreters allow copy and paste, yeah"
Ellison asks, "which screenreader do you use?"
Genevieve says, "Jaws. I have NVDA as well, but prefer Jaws because it's more flexible."
Ellison says, "cool. I just ask because someone made a NVDA add-on for IF interpreters, but I'm sure Jaws works just as well, given the right interpreter."
says, "If so, I haven't found it. :-) I find the NVDA add-on rather fiddly. That's why I'm so chuffed that I can play almost any IF game imaginable with my MUD client. I just whisper my text to Floyd so the poor transcript-logging bot doesn't have to log all my nonsense. :-)"
Genevieve played Leather Goddesses of Phobos on here a while back too, but got stumped by.. guess what... a maze. :-)
