Floyd |
Floyd | "Well, you've really done it now, haven't you?" Arthur says
Floyd | sarcastically, with a flick of the tail that suggests that, if he were
Floyd | human, he would be rolling his eyes. Normally you ignore his snarky
Floyd | comments, but now at those words you can't help but burst into tears.
Floyd |
Floyd | "There, there," Arthur says, sounding alarmed, "you can fix this!
Floyd | Enchantress Igmenta won't be back until midnight!"
Floyd |
Floyd | "It's hopeless!" you say, your voice muffled in your arms, "I can't do
Floyd | anything right!"
Floyd |
Floyd | For years, you've been laughed at as the witch who can't even perform
Floyd | a simple ignition charm, whose potions invariably turn into black
Floyd | sludge, and whose spells send people running from electric green
Floyd | fireworks. Tonight is your coming of age test, and you've been trying
Floyd | desperately to do the spells you'll be tested on in the room where
Floyd | you've been learning magic for the past eight years. Your classmates
Floyd | like to joke that you should never be allowed out of the Pentacle
Floyd | Chamber because it's the only magic-proof sanctuary for miles around.
Floyd | It's unfortunate that the items contained in it aren't
Floyd | magic-proof, though--a minute ago, a wayward Ventus charm, intended to
Floyd | produce a warm spring breeze, instead sent a tornado ripping through
Floyd | the room! Vials of potion are shattered on the floor, torn pages from
Floyd | spellbooks float in the air, and the Goddess statue has been smashed
Floyd | into a million pieces! How can you, the worst witch in West
Floyd | Witchington, fix the mess--and learn the required spells for the
Floyd | test--before midnight?

Floyd | test--before midnight? Floyd | Floyd | A few pointers before you start: Floyd | Floyd | Use spells by CASTing them AT objects. To see a list of spells you Floyd | have learned, SPELLS. Floyd | Floyd | If you get stuck, ASK Arthur ABOUT your problem. He may have more to Floyd | say if you ask him again or progress further in the puzzle. To see a Floyd | list of appropriate topics to ask him about, TOPICS. Floyd | Floyd | To see a list of things you have left to fix, TODO. Floyd | Floyd | To see the minimum verb list for this game, VERBS. Floyd | Floyd | To see more about this game, ABOUT, and to see the list of credited Floyd | testers, CREDITS.
Plover pushes the green 'space' button.

Floyd | Normally it's crammed with students practicing, studying, or listening Floyd | to a teacher's lecture, but tonight it is just you and your familiar Floyd | Arthur, facing the disaster you have wrought. Floyd | Floyd | A workbench that bows under the weight of a huge cauldron stands in Floyd | one corner beneath an unassuming wooden shelf and next to a Floyd | battered-looking potions cabinet. A bookcase towers over the rest of Floyd | the room from another corner, and faded chalk circle drawn on the Floyd | floor marks the room as essentially one big conjuring circle.. Set Floyd | into the eastern wall is the altar door, currently blocked by a pile Floyd | of rubble that used to be the Goddess statue. Set into the Floyd | western wall is the door that leads downstairs to the rest of the Floyd | Library Arcana. Floyd | Floyd | Several bottles of potion have fallen from their shelf and shattered Floyd | all over the floor into a sticky mess. Floyd | Floyd | On the bookcase is the crystal ball's stand. But where is the crystal Floyd | ball? Floyd | Floyd | A number of spell books have fallen to the floor in an accusatory Floyd | heap. Floyd | Floyd | Torn pages are strewn about the room. Floyd | Floyd | There is a shimmering puddle on the floor. Floyd | Floyd | You can also see Arthur here. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Protagonist, use the bowl, not the staff."

A witch who was Floyd | careless of the dosage could find herself staring into the void for Floyd | days or even weeks. In 1248, the practice was forbidden to novices Floyd | after one unfortunate young witch went into a trance that lasted Floyd | almost fifteen years! Mostly such experiments are harmless, but Floyd | nevertheless we caution you to exercise extreme Floyd | caution--on more than one occasion a young witch has been Floyd | seriously injured or even killed after a poorly judged attempt at Floyd | inventing a new spell. Floyd | Floyd | The most famous example of a gibberish spell is the Abracadabra Floyd | charm, which was designed by Abraxas Hodge in 1682 to do nothing at Floyd | all as part of a bet with Xylli Zzyllious to see who could come up Floyd | with the most useless spell. Floyd | Floyd | Some common diagrams: Floyd | Floyd | Conjuring Circles: Most witches' first diagrams are conjuring (or Floyd | summoning) circles, which are used to define the scope of magic. Experienced practitioners Floyd | sometimes can hold everything focused in their minds' eye and don't Floyd | require diagrams, but this requires absolute concentration to avoid Floyd | the spell fizzling out and therefore shouldn't be attempted by Floyd | novices. Floyd | Floyd | Some common diagrams: Floyd | Floyd | Conjuring Circles: Most witches' first diagrams are conjuring (or Floyd | summoning) circles, which are used to define the scope of magic. Most Floyd | conjuring circles are not simply for mental focus; they are also Floyd | enchanted to prevent any magic from leaving the bounds of the circle. Floyd | This both prevents the expenditure of energy to extend a spell further Floyd | than necessary and prevents those outside the circle from experiencing Floyd | the spells' effects. Floyd | Floyd | Pentacles: Pentacles are used in spells with a lot of moving parts Floyd | that need to be carefully kept in balance.
