Floyd | Floyd | You stare lasers through the bars of your prison door at Lord Infamy. Floyd | Floyd | "Commander Powers." Infamy's cold eyes taunt you. "This is the last Floyd | time you'll trouble me." He pulls the chromed lever built into the Floyd | control panel. Instantly, your cage drops a meter toward the frigid Floyd | water below. Floyd | Floyd | Infamy strides to the edge of the lake. "You're about to make the Floyd | acquaintance of a few of my pets," he purrs. You can't stop yourself Floyd | from glancing towards the churning waters. Martian razorfish! Floyd | Floyd | "I intend to savor the experience. Every minute, you will be lowered a Floyd | fraction toward your inevitable demise." Infamy smiles sinisterly. Floyd | Floyd | A uniformed minion hurries into the room and whispers into Infamy's Floyd | ear. He looks pained. "It seems I shall have to forgo that pleasure Floyd | after all, Commander. More urgent matters require my attention." Floyd | Floyd | Abruptly, the cage drops again. It sways slightly as it is jerked to a Floyd | halt by the steel cable which suspends it. "Goodbye, Commander. And Floyd | good riddance!" With a swirl of his cape, Infamy sweeps from the room. Floyd | Floyd | "I'll get you yet, Lord Infamy!" you howl after him. DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > I Floyd | Floyd | You are carrying: Floyd | a uniform (being worn) Floyd | an unbreakable nylon fiber rope (imprisoning your wrists behind your Floyd | back) Floyd | a Sentinels of Outer Space insignia (being worn) Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x cage"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > X CAGE Floyd | Floyd | The cage is large enough to confine a human being. It is composed of Floyd | titanium bars so thick that even your mighty muscles would be unable Floyd | to budge them. The bars form a grid too small for you to fit your hand Floyd | through, but large enough for Martian razorfish to pass through Floyd | unimpeded. Floyd | Floyd | The door of your prison is securely locked. Beyond it, you can see the Floyd | shore, and safety. Floyd | Floyd | The cage is suspended four meters above the water. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW says, "hm. Wonder if we've got any voice-activated toys."
Knight_Otu says, "Quite possible."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x insignia"

DavidW says (to Floyd), "x uniform"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > X UNIFORM Floyd | Floyd | The uniform of the Sentinels of Outer Space molds itself to your Floyd | impressive physique. The trousers are charcoal and tight enough to Floyd | scandalize the ladies. The tunic is a handsome dove gray, and has Floyd | ivory braid across the chest. The insignia pinned to your lapel Floyd | indicates your membership in the Sentinels of Outer Space. Floyd | Floyd | Suddenly, sickeningly, the cage plummets another meter towards the Floyd | water. Floyd | Floyd | The cage is now suspended three meters above the water. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Well, Martian Razorfish, too, I'd say."
DavidW says, "eep. We drop by a meter each time."

DavidW says (to Floyd), "x pool"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > X POOL Floyd | Floyd | The underground lake is a natural formation. It's roughly twenty Floyd | meters in diameter, and looks very deep. The cage is suspended in the Floyd | center. Innumerable Martian razorfish flash through it, churning the Floyd | water into foam. Floyd | Floyd | The cage is now suspended three meters above the water. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take insignia"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > TAKE INSIGNIA Floyd | Floyd | Using an undignified combination of your chin and the bars of the Floyd | cage, you work the insignia free from your lapel. As the pin finally Floyd | pulls free, it tumbles to the cage floor, and narrowly escapes being Floyd | lost over the edge. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take insignia"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > TAKE INSIGNIA Floyd | Floyd | Putting your back to the bars, you lower yourself to a sitting, then a Floyd | lying, position. With infinite caution, you coax the insignia from the Floyd | cage floor into your mouth. At last, you hold it securely between your Floyd | teeth, with the pin pointed outward. Floyd | Floyd | Suddenly, sickeningly, the cage plummets another meter towards the Floyd | water. Floyd | Floyd | The cage is now suspended two meters above the water. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Nice."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "unlock door with pin"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > UNLOCK DOOR WITH PIN Floyd | Floyd | Let's see - picking a lock with a pin in your teeth, while hanging Floyd | suspended over a lake of ravenous Martian razorfish. Piece of cake for Floyd | the Sentinels of Outer Space! Floyd | Floyd | Carefully, you insert the end of the pin into the keyhole, and begin Floyd | probing its innards. You align the tumblers, then slowly turn your Floyd | head to disengage the bolt. Floyd | Floyd | Whoops! As the bolt comes free, you sprawl face down through the Floyd | suddenly-opening door. You're able to save yourself, but your Floyd | Sentinels insignia falls into the water below and disappears. Floyd | Shuddering, you work your way back into the cage, then rise to your Floyd | feet. Floyd | Floyd | >

DavidW says (to Floyd), "swing cage"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > SWING CAGE Floyd | Floyd | You grasp the bars with your tied hands, and lean back and forth in Floyd | rhythm with the natural period of the cage qua pendulum. You are Floyd | quickly able to build up an arc of 2 meters or so. Floyd | Floyd | >

Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > G Floyd | Floyd | Furiously, you continue pumping the cage back and forth. With an Floyd | effort, you build up the length of the arc to 18 meters. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | The arc of the cage extends almost from the edge of the lake to the Floyd | rock wall. At each end of the arc, your stomach does a small flip as Floyd | you are briefly weightless. In the center of the arc, the Floyd | razorfish-filled water rockets by mere centimeters below your feet. Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > G Floyd | Floyd | Furiously, you continue pumping the cage back and forth. No matter how Floyd | you try, however, you can't seem to increase its arc. DavidW says (to Floyd), "jump"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > JUMP Floyd | Floyd | You screw up your courage, and fling yourself into space. For an Floyd | instant, you think you're going to fall short, but you land half in Floyd | and half out of the water. Flopping like the fish you're trying to Floyd | escape, you pull your legs onto shore and roll a safe distance from Floyd | the water. The area where you fell is a fountain of seething water, Floyd | foam and fish. Floyd | Floyd | You lay panting on the ground, while your heart and your breathing Floyd | slow. The swinging cage plows into the lake and sends a spray of water Floyd | over your supine form. Moments later, the cage sinks into the lake of Floyd | death, and is gone. Floyd | Floyd | When you've gathered your strength once more, you lever yourself to Floyd | your feet, and look around. Floyd | Floyd | Cavern Floyd | Two thirds of this large rock chamber is filled with an underground Floyd | lake. It's churning with activity, and in the seething water, you can Floyd | see flashes of silver. Floyd | Floyd | A steel cable runs up from the lake and into a featureless ceiling. Floyd | Floyd | A closed steel hatch is set into the north wall. Floyd | Floyd | The control panel for the deathtrap is mounted on the rocky shore. A Floyd | menacing chrome lever protrudes from it. Floyd | Floyd | Nearby, your equipment is lying where Infamy's flunkies dumped it. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Ju... yes."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x equipment"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > X EQUIPMENT Floyd | Floyd | Your ray gun is here, but it's destroyed and useless. There's a Floyd | new-fangled ballpoint pen, a copy of Detective Comics #27 and lip balm Floyd | in a white-and-black jar. Everything's been damaged beyond repair, and Floyd | you angrily boot it all into the lake. Floyd | Floyd | Wait! Here's your old Boy Scout knife! Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "cut rope with knife"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > CUT ROPE WITH KNIFE Floyd | Floyd | (first taking the Boy Scout knife) Floyd | You perform an awkward pratfall, then pick up the knife in your bound Floyd | hands. Floyd | Floyd | The knife isn't open. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open knife"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > OPEN KNIFE Floyd | Floyd | Working by touch, you carefully pry open the larger blade of the Floyd | knife. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "cut rope with knife"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > CUT ROPE WITH KNIFE Floyd | Floyd | You twist the knife upward, and saw awkwardly at your bonds. Your Floyd | blade makes quick work of the ropes, and they soon fall to the ground. Floyd | You are free once more. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take knife"
Floyd ] Cavern Floyd | > Floyd | > TAKE KNIFE Floyd | Floyd | You already have that. Floyd | Floyd | >

DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > N Floyd | Floyd | The hatch leads to a short, dark, ascending tunnel. You blunder your Floyd | way through, eventually emerging through a second hatch. Floyd | Floyd | The Laboratory Floyd | You're in a small chamber above ground. Most of the room is the Floyd | sterile white of laboratories everywhere, but the north wall has a Floyd | large transparent bubble protruding outward. Outside, you can see the Floyd | Martian surface and a distant dome. The only exit is the hatch leading Floyd | back south. Floyd | Floyd | An open steel hatch is set into the south wall. Floyd | Floyd | A cube-like machine squats along the wall next to the bubble. Floyd | Floyd | Along the west wall, a purpose-built table contains some sort of book. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x book"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X BOOK Floyd | Floyd | The book seems to be a programming guide for the machine in this room. Floyd | It is uncountable thousands of creamy loose-leaf pages long, Floyd | permanently mounted in a metal bracket affixed to a table. The bracket Floyd | has a small nameplate, which reads "Transmutation: A Mutant's Intro". Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu asks, "Purpose-built?"
DavidW says, "I guess the author means custom-built."
Knight_Otu says, "Could be."
DavidW says, "It's not a generic table, but one made for holding this book."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "read book"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > READ BOOK Floyd | Floyd | Glancing through the book, you see columns on columns of five-digit Floyd | numbers. Picking one at a random entry, you read: Floyd | Floyd | Return code 77375: Edison circuit tripped Floyd | Floyd | This is gibberish! Maybe if you knew what to look up. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x machine"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X MACHINE Floyd | Floyd | The machine is almost a cube, and about five feet on each edge. The Floyd | front of the machine displays three pictures, in a vertical column. Floyd | Each picture displays the head, torso or legs of an alien creature! Floyd | Floyd | The pictures display the head of a Martian kangasaur, the torso of a Floyd | Martian kangasaur and the legs of a Martian kangasaur. To the left of Floyd | each picture is a steel button. Floyd | Floyd | Below the pictures, there's a mechanical readout of five digits. It Floyd | currently displays "00000". Floyd | Floyd | Mounted vertically on the right side of the machine, toward the bubble Floyd | window, are three long tubes of frosted glass. Floyd | Floyd | > | DavidW asks, "Do you get the feeling we need to go get that pin back by becoming a Martian razorfish merman?"
Knight_Otu says, "Maybe. It's a possibility."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "push top button"

DavidW says (to Floyd), "x megastrich"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X MEGASTRICH Floyd | Floyd | The top picture shows the head of a yellow-crested Jovian megastrich. Floyd | Unlike its smaller Earth eponym, the megastrich is a carnivore. It Floyd | chases down its prey with its powerful running legs, kicks it to death Floyd | and (in a manner you'd prefer not to contemplate) spits a potent acid Floyd | to pre-digest it. The purpose of the megastrich's stubby wings remains Floyd | unknown, since no flying species are known to live on Jupiter. Floyd | Floyd | Studying the picture carefully, you note the sharp coal black beak and Floyd | peaked crest. Despite the creature's name, its crest is actually iron. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x kangasaur"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X KANGASAUR Floyd | Floyd | Which do you mean, the middle picture or the bottom picture? Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "middle"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > MIDDLE Floyd | Floyd | The middle picture shows the torso of a violet-bellied Martian Floyd | kangasaur. The kangasaur is the peak predator of this region of Mars, Floyd | chasing the smaller red sand fleas with its powerful leaping hind legs Floyd | and snatching them with its gecko-like tongue. Best of all, the Floyd | kangasaur is a hypoxygen-breather! Floyd | Floyd | Studying the picture carefully, you note the small charcoal forepaws Floyd | and sleek belly. Despite the creature's name, its belly is actually Floyd | slate. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look up 00000 in book"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > LOOK UP 00000 IN BOOK Floyd | Floyd | Return code 00000: Success Floyd | Floyd | Huh. That's something we could use more of. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Never let a colorblind xenozoologist name the animals."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x bubble"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X BUBBLE Floyd | Floyd | The bubble is a precise quarter sphere made of a tough, transparent Floyd | plastic that protrudes outward from the north wall. It's big enough to Floyd | walk into. In fact, the top is a couple of feet higher than your 6' 2" Floyd | frame. Floyd | Floyd | On close inspection, the sphere appears to be more than a window. Floyd | Where it touches the wall, a bead of softer plastic mounted on the Floyd | wall forms an airtight seal. And where the sphere meets the floor, it Floyd | passes through another seal. Tracing the line with your eyes, you see Floyd | that the floor seal forms a perfect circle, precisely bisected by the Floyd | wall. Inside the circle, the floor is no longer the white tile of the Floyd | main floor, but a soft silver. Floyd | Floyd | You can see the rugged Martian landscape outside. In the distance, Floyd | across some sort of ravine, there's an immense transparent dome. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x dome"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X DOME Floyd | Floyd | The dome is hundreds of yards across. You can see structures inside, Floyd | but you can't make out details. Floyd | Floyd | >

Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X BAT Floyd | Floyd | You can't see any such thing. Floyd | Floyd | >
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x marshbat"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X MARSHBAT Floyd | Floyd | The top picture shows the head of a blue-eyed Venusian marshbat. Its Floyd | resemblance to an Earth bat is superficial, at best. In the dense Floyd | atmosphere of its native planet, it can fly indefinitely, navigating Floyd | the steamy jungle by echolocation. It doesn't breathe, as such, but Floyd | lands in the rich loam and extracts oxygen through organs in its legs. Floyd | Floyd | Studying the picture carefully, you note the enlarged inky ears and Floyd | intense eyes. Despite the creature's name, its eyes are actually Floyd | gunmetal. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu says, "Maybe we need something to eat the fish."
DavidW says, "I'm thinking, if we're all metal, they can't eat us at all."
Knight_Otu says, "Hm. Maybe."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "push top"

DavidW says (to Floyd), "x turtle"
Floyd ] The Laboratory Floyd | > Floyd | > X TURTLE Floyd | Floyd | The top picture shows the head of a green-shelled Plutonian frost Floyd | turtle, the largest creature yet discovered on Sol's ninth and newest Floyd | planet. In Pluto's frigid night, even oxygen freezes, so the frost Floyd | turtle retains its own atmosphere inside a transparent helmet that it Floyd | can close at will. It navigates the nightmarish mountains of frozen Floyd | gases using suction cup-like graspers on its two front limbs and Floyd | traverses the soft snows of the plains using hind limbs that inflate Floyd | to form snowshoes. Floyd | Floyd | Studying the picture carefully, you note the clear helmet and scaly Floyd | onyx head. Floyd | Floyd | > | Knight_Otu asks, "That may be promising?"
DavidW says, "They're all promising."
DavidW says, "We'll probably have to become several hybrids in this game."
Knight_Otu says, "I meant specifically for surviving the razorfish."
DavidW says, "None of the four seemed to have safe legs for the fish."
DavidW says, "Also, I didn't see any"
DavidW says, "human option on this thing."
DavidW asks, "How do we restore ourselves to normal afterwards?"
Knight_Otu asks, "If the animals are different from their normal version, maybe there's one with steel legs?"
Knight_Otu says, "Theory - our genetic information replaces the ones wetake on in the cube."

Floyd | 2) Each of these beams passes through a different colored filter, Floyd | transforming the beam to black. Floyd | 3) The chromatic integrator at the top of the Acme Mark III Floyd | Deluminator recombines the seven identical black beams into a ray of Floyd | pure darkness! Floyd ] Platform Floyd | > Floyd | > READ TECHNICAL Floyd | Floyd | Technical Information Floyd | Floyd | Hello, gearhead! Floyd | Floyd | Eager to dig into the details of how the Acme Mark III Deluminator Floyd | works? Let's start with a little background about light. Floyd | Floyd | If you've ever seen a rainbow, you know that light is composed seven Floyd | different colors: white, red, violet, blue, green, yellow and black. Floyd | Natural starlight can be separated into these component parts using a Floyd | chromatic disintegrator. Floyd | Floyd | The fun starts when you transform the colored beams in different ways. Floyd | For instance, when you filter blue light through a red lens, you'll Floyd | get violet! Floyd | Floyd | Why is this? Well, the colors are arranged in cycles of seven, called Floyd | septaves. They're a lot like the octaves you find in music. You could Floyd | number the colors like this: Floyd | Floyd | 0 = White Floyd | 1 = Red Floyd | 2 = Violet Floyd | 3 = Blue Floyd | 4 = Green Floyd | 5 = Yellow Floyd | 6 = Black Floyd | Floyd | Filtering disintegrated light is like subtracting their numbers. So, Floyd | filtering blue light (3) with a red lens (1) gives you violet light Floyd | (2)! Floyd | Floyd | But what if you filter red light (1) with a blue lens (3)? They Floyd | subtract to (-2), and there's no color for that! Well, after you reach Floyd | the bottom of a septave, another one begins, just like an octave in Floyd | music. So, (-1) is the same as (6), and (-2) is the same as (5). So Floyd | red light (1) filtered through a blue lens (3) creates yellow light Floyd | (5)! Floyd | Floyd | Finally, seven identical beams can be recombined and amplified into a Floyd | coherent ray using a chromatic integrator. Floyd | Floyd | Of course, you don't need to keep track of all these details. Acme Floyd | makes it simple by labeling each lens aperture with the color of the Floyd | lens that should be placed in it. As long as you're careful to follow Floyd | these instructions, the Acme Mark III Deluminator will always emit a Floyd | ray of pure darkness. Floyd ] Platform Floyd | > Floyd | > READ SAFETY Floyd | Floyd | Safety Instructions Floyd | Floyd | Hello, fussbudget! Floyd | Floyd | Please follow these safety precautions when using your Acme Mark III Floyd | Deluminator: Floyd | Floyd | 1) Do not immerse the deluminator. There is a small danger of Floyd | chromaticution. Floyd | 2) The Acme Mark III Deluminator is designed only for use with type G Floyd | white starlight. Do not use with other star types. Floyd | 3) Never look directly into the chromatic integrator. Floyd | 4) Do not use on inhabited planets. This may cause the extinction of Floyd | life on the deluminated planet. Floyd | 5) Never use the deluminator to generate anything other than pure Floyd | darkness. This may cause the deluminator to overheat. (For other Floyd | colors, try the new Acme Mark IV Illuminator!) Floyd | 6) Do not use the deluminator in the vicinity of a gas leak. Floyd | Floyd | Failure to follow these safety precautions will void the warranty for Floyd | the Acme Mark III Deluminator.
