DavidW says, "Should we try Cave? That's by the guy who did that child-like Dragon Adventure one."
Knight_Otu says, "Sure."
wordsmith says, "That works for me."
Knight_Otu says, "Let's hope there isn't another troll that eagerly jumps into our weapon while dead again, though."
DavidW says, "hold on. I need to find out why there's 38 files or so."
DavidW says, "oh, help and graphics. We won't need those."
wordsmith asks, "Is there 'cave.blb' in the zip file?"
DavidW says, "yup" | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "load cave"
Floyd | Welcome to the Cheap Glk Implementation, library version 0.9.0. Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | Floyd | A small game file showing one way to use pictures and sounds in games. Floyd | (Type INFO at any time for more information.) Floyd | Floyd | Cave Floyd | by William Stott Floyd | Release 1 / Serial number 040606 / Inform v6.30 Library 6/11 S Floyd | Floyd | Lake in the Forest Floyd | Dragonflies hum and hover, and you hear the occasional splash of Floyd | feeding fish. There is a little path winding between dense trees Floyd | towards the south. Floyd | You can go south (further into the trees). Floyd | Floyd | You can see some long reeds and a large iron key here. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x me"
Floyd | You are wearing the traditional clothing of an adventurer. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying nothing. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x reeds"
Floyd | Floyd | You see a mass of reeds that sway gently in the shallow water. Floyd | Looking in the reeds, you find a sack. There is something inside... Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take sack"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take key"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x key"
Floyd | You see a large, dull iron key that must be for an ancient door. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "open sack"
Floyd | You see a hessian sack. Floyd | Inside is a reed flute... Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x flute"
Floyd | The flute is made of elaborately-carved wood. Floyd | | DavidW says, "How strange. His other game also had a flute... in a sack... hidden in reeds."
Knight_Otu says, "This is sounding kind of familiar so far."
Knight_Otu says, "Right."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x fish"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing. Floyd | | DavidW asks, "South?"
Knight_Otu says, "Yeah."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | Floyd | Tree Stump Floyd | The twisting path leads east deeper into the forest and continues Floyd | north, winding into the trees. There is an old tree-stump next to the Floyd | path where once a great oak tree must have stood. It seems to be hollow Floyd | in the centre. Floyd | You can go north (along a path to a lake) or east (further into the Floyd | forest). Floyd | Floyd | You can see a hollow tree stump here. Floyd | | DavidW says, "We found matches in a stump in the other game."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x stump"
Floyd | You look carefully in the hollow tree stump and. find a box of Floyd | matches... Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x matches"
Floyd | You see a box of matches. It's nearly full. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying: Floyd | a large iron key Floyd | a brown hessian sack Floyd | a reed flute Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take matches"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
DavidW says, "I get the feeling that the author is retreading his own material."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "play flute"
Floyd | OK... squeeeak... Floyd | (You don't know how to play it properly - perhaps you need an Floyd | instruction booklet...) Floyd | | DavidW says, "yeah, that's the same too."
Knight_Otu says, "It's not quite the same map according to my recollection, but..."
DavidW says, "It's a different map, yes."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | Floyd | Cave Entrance Floyd | The opening to a deep cave leads eastwards into darkness, and the path Floyd | winds west into the forest. Floyd | You can go west (to the forest) or east (into the dark cave). Floyd | Floyd | You can see a small candle stub (unlit) and an ancient silver coin Floyd | here. Floyd | | Knight_Otu asks, "A cut-down version, perhaps?"
wordsmith says (to Floyd), "info"
Floyd | Cave (a short demo using sounds and pictures in Glulx) Floyd | Floyd | The Inform Glulx example here illustrates a way I've found to get Floyd | pictures and sounds into games - hopefully, it might help anyone Floyd | wanting to experiment for themselves. Two good places to start are Adam Floyd | Cadre's Gull guide ([LINK]), and the Glulx Floyd | section at Roger Firth's site ([LINK]). It's Floyd | a good idea to read both of these first. Floyd | Floyd | I've put comments in the accompanying source code to help explain Floyd | what's going on. Please feel free to borrow any ideas. All the trickier Floyd | stuff is taken straight from the examples in the Gull documentation, Floyd | where it's explained fully. Floyd | Floyd | The pictures and sounds used here have been borrowed from the Floyd | children's game Dragon Adventure (also in the IF Archive). The game was Floyd | originally written in BASIC for RISC OS computers, and I wanted to use Floyd | the same pictures and sound files in the Glulx version. The various Floyd | picture sizes were chosen to fit the 640 x 480 VGA screen of the Floyd | original version. At higher screen resolutions the pictures appear Floyd | smaller, and remain with a fixed offset from the left side of the main Floyd | window. I haven't found a way round this with Glulx. Floyd | Floyd | PD sound effects can be found on the internet - Floyd | [LINK] is a search site specifically for sound Floyd | effect samples. This gives links to thousands of AU, AIFF and (mostly) Floyd | WAV samples (I found 106 elephant sounds, for instance), though you Floyd | need to check the copyright status before using anything. Floyd | Floyd | You'll probably also need an editor for trimming and changing the Floyd | volume of sound samples. One good one is Audacity, a freeware open Floyd | source editor for Windows, Linux and the Mac (from Floyd | [LINK]). This can convert samples between a Floyd | range of formats (including to AIFF) with different sample rate and Floyd | quality settings. Other utilies (such as the PC shareware Easy CD-DA Floyd | Extractor from [LINK]) may also be of help for file Floyd | conversion to AIFF. 8-bit mono at 11 or 16KHz seems to be about the Floyd | best compromise between file length and quality for basic game sound Floyd | effects. Floyd | Floyd | For pictures, the freeware open source GIMP graphics editor (from Floyd | [LINK]) is capable and comprehensive, with facilities to Floyd | rival Photoshop. It's available for Windows, Linux and the Mac, and, Floyd | once you get the hang of it, is useful for both image creation and Floyd | manipulation. Floyd | Floyd | Like its parent game, this demo has a built-in picture map on screen Floyd | which shows the places visited (type 'map'). Sound effects can be Floyd | turned off or on by 'sound off/on'. It's also possible to see briefly Floyd | inside the dark cave by striking a match, and 'listen' will replay the Floyd | sound heard by the lake. The demo has no set game ending (in case Floyd | anyone tries to find one!). Floyd | Floyd | William Stott, June 2004 Floyd | Floyd | (Type LOOK or L to see where you are in the game) Floyd | | DavidW says, "We had to fill a birdbath for the candle before. And the coin was in the inn."
DavidW asks, "So this is more of a demo than a full game?"
wordsmith says, "It sounds that way to me."
DavidW asks, "Shall we continue anyway?"
DavidW says, "It might be shorter than we expect."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take all"
Floyd | You need to say which objects you want to take. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take stub"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | Knight_Otu asks, "I mean, why not?"
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take coin"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x coin"
Floyd | The coin is very old and made of silver. On one side you see the Floyd | portrait of an ancient king, on the other there is a picture of a Floyd | galloping horse. It looks quite valuable. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "light candle"
Floyd | OK... you light the candle using the matches... Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | Floyd | Damp Tunnel Floyd | The cave floor is moist from condensation, and your flickering candle Floyd | casts pools of pallid light which sway and dance through the shadows. Floyd | The cave exit is to the west. Floyd | Floyd | You can see a mouldy old boot here. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take boot"
Floyd | Taken. Floyd | | ||
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x it"
Floyd | You see an old, mouldy boot. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look it in"
Floyd | You can't see "it" (the mouldy old boot) at the moment. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "look in boot"
Floyd | You find nothing of interest. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "empty boot"
Floyd | The mouldy old boot can't contain things. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "wear boot"
Floyd | You can't wear that! Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "shake boot"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "i"
Floyd | You are carrying: Floyd | a mouldy old boot Floyd | an ancient silver coin Floyd | a small, burning candle stub (providing light) Floyd | a box of matches Floyd | a large iron key Floyd | a brown hessian sack Floyd | a reed flute Floyd | | Knight_Otu asks, "The boot held ... what was it?"
DavidW says, "hm. I don't remember now. Something."
Knight_Otu says, "But apparently not in this game, whatever it was."
DavidW says, "I don't see any exits but the way we entered."
Knight_Otu says (to Floyd), "x shadows"
Floyd | You can't see any such thing. Floyd | | Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
DavidW says (to Floyd), "l"
Floyd | Floyd | Damp Tunnel Floyd | The cave floor is moist from condensation, and your flickering candle Floyd | casts pools of pallid light which sway and dance through the shadows. Floyd | The cave exit is to the west. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "dig"
Floyd | What do you want to dig? Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "floor"
Floyd | Digging would achieve nothing here. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "e"
Floyd | You can't go that way. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x floor"
Floyd | You see nothing unexpected in that direction. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | You can't go that way. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | Floyd | Cave Entrance Floyd | The opening to a deep cave leads eastwards into darkness, and the path Floyd | winds west into the forest. Floyd | You can go west (to the forest) or east (into the dark cave). Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | Floyd | Tree Stump Floyd | The twisting path leads east deeper into the forest and continues Floyd | north, winding into the trees. There is an old tree-stump next to the Floyd | path where once a great oak tree must have stood. It seems to be hollow Floyd | in the centre. Floyd | You can go north (along a path to a lake) or east (further into the Floyd | forest). Floyd | Floyd | You can see a hollow tree stump (which is empty) here. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "s"
Floyd | You can't go that way. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "w"
Floyd | You can't go that way. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "n"
Floyd | Floyd | Lake in the Forest Floyd | Dragonflies hum and hover, and you hear the occasional splash of Floyd | feeding fish. There is a little path winding between dense trees Floyd | towards the south. Floyd | You can go south (further into the trees). Floyd | Floyd | You can see some long reeds here. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "swim"
Floyd | There's not enough water to swim in. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "take reeds"
Floyd | They're fixed in place. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "x lake"
Floyd | Floyd | You see a mass of reeds that sway gently in the shallow water. Floyd | You see nothing special about the long reeds. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "throw boot into lake"
Floyd | Those can't contain things. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "kick boot"
Floyd | That's not a verb I recognise. Floyd
DavidW says (to Floyd), "drop boot"
Floyd | Dropped. Floyd | | ||
