ClubFloyd Transcript:
Sugarlawn by Mike Spivey
As played on ifMUD on November 24, 2019

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Sugarlawn written by Mike Spivey. It won 4th Place in the 2019 IFComp, and won 1st place for IFComp Miss Congeniality as well. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

Floyd | will be collecting valuables in Sugarlawn Plantation on the banks of
Floyd | Bayou Lafourche in southern Louisiana.
Floyd |
Floyd | "To our contestant: Have fun! And good luck!"
Floyd |
Floyd |
Floyd | Foyer
Floyd | This is the foyer of Sugarlawn Plantation. Most of the
Floyd | nineteenth-century furniture and decorations have been removed, but
Floyd | the gorgeous walnut floor and elaborate cornices testify to the
Floyd | mansion's opulence. The front door of Sugarlawn is to the west. The
Floyd | main hall on the ground floor continues east, while doorways lie to
Floyd | the north and south.
Floyd |
Floyd | A large sack has been left by the front door.
Floyd |
Floyd | A mahogany box sits somewhat incongruously on the floor here.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Sugarlawn, as its name indicates, was one of the largest sugar cane
Floyd | plantations of the antebellum South," you hear Terri say. "The
Floyd | mansion was built in 1840, in the Greek Revival style. It fell into
Floyd | decay in the decades after the Civil War, but it was purchased and
Floyd | restored by Nash and Molly Pendry in the mid-1950s. The current owner
Floyd | is their grandson.
Floyd |
Floyd | "We have made a few cosmetic changes to the mansion for the recording
Floyd | of this episode, and we have temporarily removed many of the
Floyd | furnishings as well. If you would like to see Sugarlawn at its
Floyd | unaltered finest, the mansion and grounds are open for visitors from
Floyd | 9-12 every Tuesday morning.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Oh, and before I forget: At any time the contestant may ask ABOUT the

Floyd | > ABOUT
Floyd |
Floyd | "We have hidden fifty valuables around the house and grounds of
Floyd | Sugarlawn Plantation," says Terri. "Most of these will be easy to
Floyd | find, but some may prove to be a bit more challenging.
Floyd |
Floyd | "You have thirty minutes to explore the plantation, collecting these
Floyd | valuables. Your collected valuables will be sold at auction, and you
Floyd | will receive prize money equal to their total sale price. The easiest
Floyd | way to collect a valuable is to bring it to Sugarlawn's foyer.
Floyd |
Floyd | "In addition, each valuable has a specific target location - a room or
Floyd | outdoor space - around the house and grounds. Leaving a valuable in
Floyd | its target location will not only count as collecting that valuable,
Floyd | it will also earn you a cash bonus. These cash bonuses will increase
Floyd | as you place more objects in their target locations. You will not
Floyd | explicitly be told the target locations; however, for each object its
Floyd | target location will be somehow associated with that object. For
Floyd | example, the target location for a Yemeni jambiya dagger might be an
Floyd | armory. In addition, each time you come through the foyer I will tell
Floyd | you how many valuables you have correctly placed so far. Note that
Floyd | multiple objects may have the same target location.
Floyd |
Floyd | "There are two other major cash bonuses that may also be earned. As
Floyd | always on Antique Escapes, one of these is for escaping the
Floyd | mansion through the front door. The other is for you to discover.
Floyd |
Floyd | "We have provided a sack in the foyer for you to transport your
Floyd | valuables. However, if you choose not to use the sack, cash bonuses
Floyd | (but not the money earned at auction for collected valuables) will be
Floyd | doubled. On the other hand, forgoing the sack means that you will be
Floyd | limited in the number of items you are able to carry at any one time.
Floyd |
Floyd | "As a reminder, certain actions effectively take no time. These
Floyd | include looking, examining, and taking inventory.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Finally, you may ask ABOUT these rules again at any time."
Floyd |
Floyd | [In addition... COMMANDS gives a list of some common commands in
Floyd | parser-based interactive fiction. HINTS gives some general tips on
Floyd | playing Sugarlawn. THINK provides a reminder of how you got

Floyd | doorway leads north to the colonial room, while a second doorway lies
Floyd | to the east.
Floyd |
Floyd | On the altar is Interview with a Vampire.
Floyd |
Floyd | "It was fairly common for plantation homes in the antebellum South to
Floyd | have their own chapel," says Terri, "although Sugarlawn is unusual in
Floyd | that its chapel is inside the main house rather than a separate
Floyd | structure on the grounds.
Floyd |
Floyd | "Another distinctive feature of this chapel is that it was originally
Floyd | Roman Catholic," Terri continues. "While most churchgoing antebellum
Floyd | Southerners were Protestants, French and Spanish ownership of
Floyd | Louisiana during nearly all of its colonial period meant that there
Floyd | were a large number of Catholics in south Louisiana by the time of the
Floyd | Civil War. That remains true even today."

Floyd | Your collected treasures were sold at a New Orleans auction, for a
Floyd | total of $5936:
Floyd | wooden abacus: bought by a math teacher from Coushatta, for $314,
Floyd | stuffed armadillo: sportsmen into taxidermy generally prefer their own
Floyd | kills; still, thanks to its high quality and general pulchritude, it
Floyd | sold for $301,
Floyd | The Awakening: purchased by Tulane University for its
Floyd | library's special collection, for $1899,
Floyd | strand of red beads: they turn out to be Mardi Gras beads dating from
Floyd | the 1930s; unfortunately, even vintage Mardi Gras beads are not that
Floyd | valuable, and they only bring $19,
Floyd | alligator-skin belt: made from genuine alligator leather, the belt
Floyd | goes to a man from Point a la Hache for $225,
Floyd | family Bible: they're surprisingly common, even ones as old as this;
Floyd | however, a collector did purchase it for $305,
Floyd | blue feather boa: after a brief bidding war between rival Cher
Floyd | impersonators, it eventually sold for $49,
Floyd | glass bottle: handcrafted and dating from the nineteenth century, it
Floyd | still only went for $34,
Floyd | brass trumpet: bought by a young man from Houma, as his first trumpet,
Floyd | for $239,
Floyd | jeweled duck figurine: sold to an avid duck hunter from West Monroe,
Floyd | for $215,
Floyd | embroidery sampler: after an expert dates it to the 1840s, it's bought
Floyd | by a retired woman from Winnsboro for $348,
Floyd | Interview with a Vampire: purchased by an agent of Faulkner
Floyd | House Books in New Orleans, for $666,
Floyd | golden iris: bought as a decoration by the LSU AgCenter Botanic
Floyd | Gardens, for $543,
Floyd | orange mask: sold to a young woman from Gross Tete, for $14,
Floyd | jeweled peach: it's covered in small cubic zirconia stones rather than
Floyd | diamonds, and it was bought by a Ruston man for only $25,
Floyd | cathedral radio: the radio dates from the 1930s, and it sold for $140,
Floyd | cavalry saber: after determining that it was used by a cavalry officer
Floyd | - but not Andrew Jackson - during the War of 1812, it was bought by
Floyd | the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport, for $415,
Floyd | model steamboat: purchased by the Mississippi Welcome Center in
Floyd | Vicksburg, for $139,
Floyd | old voodoo doll: it's not as old as it appears; still, Marie Laveau's
Floyd | apparently thought it had some resale value, as they bought it for
Floyd | $46.
Floyd |
Floyd | You also placed the following treasures in their target locations, for
Floyd | a total bonus of $2100:
Floyd | alligator-skin belt: Bayou Room, for $100,

Floyd | Captain Verdeterre's Plunder, by Ryan Veeder, was the direct
Floyd | inspiration for Sugarlawn's primary goal of collecting
Floyd | valuables under a time constraint. Six Silver Bullets, by
Floyd | William Dooling, was also an inspiration in how it encourages players
Floyd | to gather information that can be used in subsequent playthroughs.
Floyd |
Floyd | The mansion in Sugarlawn is closely modeled on Woodlawn
Floyd | Plantation's mansion, which was also located in Napoleonville,
Floyd | Louisiana. Woodlawn's mansion burned to the ground in 1962, but
Floyd | detailed floor plans can easily be found online.
