ClubFloyd Transcript:
Masquerade by Kathleen M. Fischer
As played on ifMUD on February 13, 2022

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Masquerade written by Kathleen M. Fischer. Masquerade is a historical romance that was released in 2000. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Pinkunz says, "I thought the title would be appropriate given Valentine's tomorrow and it hasn't been Floyded yet."
Jade has arrived. Jacqueline says, "Yeah, I'm down."
DavidW says, "I have vague memories of this game when I read the description."
DavidW says, "I suspect I might need to take a back seat, but I'm not sure. It's been ages since I played it."
DavidW says, "I uploaded Masquerade yesterday."
Jacqueline says, "Okay, great."
DavidW says, "post-comp version"
Pinkunz says, "Struck me as being in the same vein as plundered hearts."
Jacqueline says, "Looks like she released this the same year as The Cove."
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Yeah, post-comp is likely ideal for this."
DavidW says, "anyway, it's very nice to have a game pre-picked for once."
Jacqueline says, "Well, we could do that every week, it's just that we usually are tired."
DavidW says, "yeah"
DavidW says, "Shall I load it up? It's now the hour."
Jacqueline exclaims, "Sure!"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask masquerade"

CF | August, 1876
CF |
CF | "Men!" you snap at no one in particular as you hurry down the
CF | sidewalk. Up ahead you see Mrs. Jenkins take one look at you and head
CF | to the opposite side of the street, while Mr. Tutman and Mr. Lester
CF | look up from their checker game in front of the barber's shop and
CF | chuckle.
CF |
CF | "Poor Sean..." you hear one of them say as you hurry on by. Poor Sean,
CF | indeed. They have no idea.
CF |
CF | In your mind, you can still hear the investor's patronizing voices.
CF | "While we are sure you are quite capable, Miss Kelley," one had
CF | chuckled, "we really must speak with your uncle about financial
CF | matters such as these. You do understand."
CF |
CF | Understand? Oh yes, you understand all too well. Never mind that it's
CF | your money, that you're the one who's really in charge of the
CF | business, handling the ordering, the hiring, keeping things running as
CF | smoothly as when your father held the reins. No, none of that matters.
CF | When it comes to talking money, a woman's place is... elsewhere. Men.
CF |
CF | You stomp up the stairs of your uncle's favorite club, thrust open the
CF | outer door and step inside, already rehearsing today's lecture on
CF | promptness. The way things are shaping up, you can tell it's going to
CF | be a good one.

CF | Lucky Strike Lobby
CF | Dark stained oak paneling with well-polished brass knobs and rails
CF | attempt to give this smoky room a dignity it doesn't deserve. Rich
CF | detailing aside, this is the doorstep to depravity, and the less time
CF | you spend here, the better. For those who think otherwise, there is a
CF | plush red sofa against the far wall, positioned directly under a life
CF | sized painting of Ulysses S. Grant. To the south is an oak door
CF | leading outside. To the north is a glass door leading to the main
CF | room.
CF |
CF | Good, the lobby is empty. Moving quickly, you cross the polished oak
CF | floor toward the inner sanctum door, praying that this time you can
CF | extract your uncle without making a scene.
CF |
CF | "May I help you?" comes Simon's voice from the shadows. Rats. Just
CF | once today, couldn't something go your way? The doorman tosses a hat
CF | and coat on the sofa then hurries over, stationing himself in front of
CF | the glass door. "I'm sorry Miss Amelia, but you know the rules.

CF | about being a doorman.
CF |
CF | Lucky Strike
CF | More dark stained oak, more brass, more paneling; this room is much
CF | like the lobby, only dimmer and smokier. Dozens of round tables fill
CF | most of the interior, with a long bar along one side. Various
CF | paintings of bucking horses and slaughtered buffalo fill the few bits
CF | of wall space not covered with antlers and bullhorns. To the south is
CF | a glass door leading to the lobby. To the north, barely visible
CF | through the smoke, is a paneled door to the back alley.
CF |
CF | Seated around one of the tables are your uncle, Mr. Dunbar, Jonathan
CF | Rollings, and a gentleman unknown to you.
CF |
CF | You slip across the room, keeping to the shadows until you reach the
CF | table.

CF | investors just a few miles away, sitting there with cash in hand,
CF | where is your Uncle Sean? Playing cards. Once again you wonder what
CF | your father was thinking when made out his will. In making his brother

CF | Game Playing Hints:
CF | Almost all nouns in the text should be fair game for examining (X),
CF | with the other senses (LISTEN, TOUCH, TASTE, SMELL) supplied when I
CF | thought it was appropriate. Though the number of takeable objects has
CF | been kept to a minimum, there are a few so feel free to try it.
CF |
CF | To speak with a character (called non-player characters or NPCs), you
CF | should use "TALK TO , "T ", or plain old "T" if no other
CF | characters are around. Neither "ASK", "TELL", nor "NPC, " will
CF | work in this game. If an NPC asks you a question, you can simply type
CF | "YES" or "NO" (or ignore the NPC entirely).
CF |
CF | You also might want to re-examine NPCs as conversations develop, as
CF | well examine your own character (X SELF) at various times throughout
CF | the game.
CF |
CF | AMUSING is provided for all winning endings, so you might want to
CF | check that out as well (especially since one of the endings is quite a
CF | bit different from the rest).
CF |
CF | Help is available in some parts of the game (type HELP), though make
CF | sure you really want it as there is no chance to decline. You can also
CF | email me for hints or a walkthru.
CF |
CF | Acknowledgements:
CF | I want to thank all those who have given help to me in the past;
CF | Andrew Plotkin, Gareth Rees, Marnie Parker, Magnus Olsen, Adam Cadre
CF | (for flags.h), Graham Nelson (for Inform, the language this is written
CF | in), Irene Callaci (for the Compass Rose)... I wish I had kept better
CF | records so I could list you all.
CF |
CF | A very special thank you to Irene Callaci, who, once again, offered
CF | her infinite wisdom, patience, and incredibly sympathetic ear as I
CF | rolled from one panic state to another trying to get this done in
CF | time. Thanks!
CF |
CF | Many thanks to David Tai, Jeremy Silver, Ruth Salway, and Irene (yet
CF | again), who agreed to subject themselves to a beta version of this
CF | game, while Lelah Conrad, Anneli Meeder, Michael Kinyon, and Vincent
CF | Lynch, and Joonas Pihlaja were post-competition Parrot Scrapers
CF | extrordinare - all dutifully (gleefully?) reported my grammatical
CF | blunders, persistent failures to (once again) correctly use Mr.
CF | Apostrophe, repetitious code, plot holes, RAM errors
CF | (Read-Author's-Mind) and the like. If I could put your name in lights
CF | I would! You're the best! And speaking of the best, I can't forget my
CF | hubby, who (once again) gracefully accepted being a computer widower
CF | most of the time, and wisely dragged me away from the keyboard the
CF | rest of the time.
CF |
CF | Finally, I should note that as this is my second (released) game, I
CF | would dearly love to hear any thoughts/questions/opinions/suggestions
CF | you might have. My email address is list below, or you can post to
CF | rec.arts.int-fiction or rec.games.int-fiction (the former for
CF | programming issues, the later for game play or help).
