ClubFloyd Transcript:
Ballyhoo by Jeff O'Neill
As played on ifMUD on June 25, 2023

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Ballyhoo written by Jeff O'Neill. Ballyhoo was released by Infocom in 1985. Jacqueline has always wanted to finish this game, but never has, and ClubFloyd chose not to finish it, either. Oh well. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Jacqueline asks, "Why have we still not played Ballyhoo? Is it because I'm the only one who wants to play it?"
Jacqueline says, "That would be a good reason, I guess."
Knight_Otu says, "I'm not sure why."
Knight_Otu says, "I recall no reason to reason to exclude it."
DavidW says, "I remember getting stuck in Ballyhoo a very long time ago."
Jacqueline says, "Same, which is why I put it on the list. ClubFloyd is my goto for games I want to see but need help seeing."
DavidW says, "Although I can probably remember much of rest of it."
DavidW says, "The whole Andrew Jenny business probably hasn't aged well, but circuses have always been problematic with unusual people."
Jacqueline says, "I recall nothing other than it being at a circus and it being a little dark."
Jacqueline says, "Like, in a gritty sort of way."
Jacqueline says, "So... how 'bout it? Unless people have another suggestion, like some recent game."
Perry says, "I'm down for literally whatever."
Knight_Otu says, "I'm up for it."
DavidW says, "We can play Ballyhoo, sure. Just remember that SIDEWALL is a valid verb there."
DavidW says, "SIDEWALL means to go underneath a tent wall."
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Huh"
Jacqueline says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask ballyhoo"

CF | As you trudge along in the wake of the outflowing crowd, you thumb
CF | through your memories of this evening. Your experience of the circus,
CF | with its ballyhooed promises of wonderment and its ultimate
CF | disappointment, has been to sink your teeth into a candy apple whose
CF | fruit is rotten.
CF |
CF | Never mind the outrageous prices, the Mt. Everest vantage point, the
CF | communistically long lines, the audience more savage than the lion
CF | act. And it wasn't the shabbiness of the performances themselves
CF | that's got you soured on Spangleland. No, instead it's that the circus
CF | is a reminder of your own secret irrational desire to steal the
CF | spotlight, to defy death, and to bask in the thunder of applause.

DavidW says, "For all I know, 'guy' in this context could be a corruption of a French word."
Perry says, "...I'm not actually sure why they're called guywires. I should know that."

Knight_Otu asks, "So, Punk Points, but in near-death?"
DavidW says, "I think, if you left the circus grounds with the crowd, you'd see something suspicious that would tempt you to sneak back in."
