ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Purple Pearl (Transcript B) by Amanda Walker
As played on ifMUD on August 6, 2023

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Purple Pearl (Transcript B) written by Amanda Walker. The Purple Pearl is a unique two-player work of interactive fiction. As such, there are two different transcripts for this session, one for Group B (this transcript) and one for Group A (the other transcript). You may want to read these transcript in two different windows, side by side. The same chat text appears in both transcripts.

The Purple Pearl was an entry in ParserComp 2023, in which it tied for first place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Pinkunz asks, "DW Didn't you mention Amanda's game?"
Pinkunz asks, "Using two floyds?"
DavidW asks, "oh, yes, um, what was that? Purple Pearl?"
Pinkunz says, "Yes."
DavidW says, "I guess we could play that. We'd need two drivers and two transcripts."
Pinkunz says, "It actually tied for 1st in ParserComp yesterday."
Jacqueline says, "I wonder if that will work, give that the same file would be accessed by both bots..."
Pinkunz says, "Which is super unusual for a multiplayer game."
DavidW says, "No, two files"
Jacqueline says, "Oh. Okay."
DavidW says, "purplepearla and purplepearlb"
Pinkunz says, "Yeah, We should probably draw straws or something."
DavidW says, "And we have #clubfloyd to cross communicate with."
Pinkunz asks, "How many of us are here?"
Jacqueline says, "So... we have to do two transcripts"
DavidW says, "I assume I'll be one of the drivers."
DavidW says, "And I'm already transcribing."
DavidW says, "So I should go to the toyroom."
Jacqueline says, "Get out of here."
Perry says, "LEAVE"
Pinkunz says, "I'll join him."
DavidW gets bored and wanders off to the Toyshop. gadzoks says, "Had to leave for a sec."
Pinkunz disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again. DavidW says, "Now we need to decide who is A and who is B."
Jacqueline asks (of DW), "So which one are you loading?"
Jacqueline says, "Timing."
Jacqueline says, "You can pick."
DavidW asks, "um. May I pick A, then?"
Perry says, "No you may not."
Pinkunz asks, "So, we'll have two gameplay transcripts, but one shared chat channel transcript, right?"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Yes."
Jacqueline says, "We'll do B."
DavidW says, "okay, thanks"
Jacqueline says (to Pinkuz), "When we post, we'll have to post two transcripts, but the chat line in them will be the same."
Jacqueline says, "I don't have it in me to integrate them."
Jacqueline says, "Though technically it could be done."
Jacqueline says, "Just not with our script."
Jacqueline says, "Okay. I'm loading up B."
Jacqueline says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask purplepearlb"

CF | This game assumes that you have a partner playing Part A. You
CF | should be in communication with your partner during your play, either
CF | in person, over the phone, or by text or a messaging system It is
CF | expected that you will tell each other what you have and what you
CF | need. You will need to work together to complete the game.
CF |
CF | When your partner wants to send you an object, they should give
CF | you a partner code. Every time your partner sends you a partner code,
CF | type CODE and then the 3-digit code. Every time your game gives you a
CF | partner code, give it to your partner.
CF |
CF | There is no way to lose or lock this game in an unwinnable
CF | position.
CF |
CF | There is a hint system, but it contains hints only for your
CF | partner. If you want a hint, your partner has your hints, so you'll
CF | need to ask them for help. To get a hint for your partner, type HINT
CF | at any time.

CF | The day started like any other recent day in the Kingdom... bad luck.
CF | The land has been under a curse since the blessing of the Kingdom, the
CF | Purple Pearl of Luck, was stolen. The neighboring kingdom is ruled by
CF | Bradd, brother to your King Myron, and the two have been warring over
CF | the Purple Pearl for decades, stealing it back and forth from each
CF | other. A year ago, Bradd stole the Pearl and your best spies and
CF | warriors have been unable to take it back, and nothing has gone right
CF | since. Milk comes curdled from the cows. Chickens lay rocks. Young
CF | people weep. The sun doesn't shine. And not one person has come home
CF | from the attempt to take back the pearl in the last year.
CF |
CF | Today, the King's herald has called a public meeting, and here you are
CF | as the trumpets sound to hear the King's announcement.
CF |
CF | "Hear ye, hear ye!" yells the herald. "By order of King Myron,
CF | recruits are sought for a new program to take back our Blessing!"
CF |
CF | The crowd roars its approval.
CF |
CF | The herald continues, "WHO VOLUNTEERS?" and your hand shoots up in an
CF | impulse born of patriotism and dreams of valor. Before you know it,
CF | you are being ushered into a small room in the courtyard of the
CF | palace, and before you can say or do anything, you feel the prick of a
CF | needle in your arm.
CF |
CF | The world whirls and falls away....

CF | Stone Cell
CF | You wake on a cold stone floor. There's something on your face. You
CF | snatch it off and examine it with bleary eyes: a note. Woozily, you
CF | rise and survey your surroundings, wondering what the hell you were
CF | thinking to raise your hand. Too late now-- King Myron won't look
CF | favorably on a volunteer who changes their mind.
CF |
CF | You're in a cell made of stone.
CF |
CF | A painting with writing on it is on one wall next to a purple plaque.
CF |
CF | The opposite wall is made of bricks, with a brass panel with three
CF | switches on it.
CF |
CF | Another wall has a round hole with a black button next to it. There
CF | is also a very small window on this wall.
CF |
CF | The fourth wall has a large glass-fronted vending machine against it.
CF |
CF | There is an opening in the ceiling.
CF |
CF | There's a gray square in the middle of the floor with a birdcage on
CF | it.
CF |

Perry says, "We Were Here vibes."
Jacqueline says, "There's a note here as well, and a bunch of stuff. Panels and switches and buttons and holes."
Jacqueline says, "I'm going to read our note."
Jacqueline asks, "Who is here with me?"

CF | Welcome to the challenge! We WILL take back our Pearl with your help.
CF | We have sent many battle-hardened warriors to take it back over the
CF | last year, and none have returned. We have decided to send teams of
CF | two, tested in their ability to work together. You have a partner in
CF | another location. Your job is to figure out how to communicate with

CF |
CF | There is a hint system, but it contains hints only for your

CF | You wake on a cold stone floor. There's something on your face. You

CF | > Pinkunz says, "I feel this would have been an excellent IntroComp game."
Perry says, "Okay guess you can't sequence break by using a code that you shouldn't know."
Jacqueline says, "Well, that or I wonder if the names we enter align the codes."
Perry says, "That was my other guess, yeah"
Pinkunz says, "Since it feels like the adventure just began."
Perry says, "Which would be quite clever"
gadzoks says, "SInce playing Day of the Tentacle back in the day I've always wanted to make a multiplayer IF game."
Jacqueline says, "Yeah"
DavidW says, "I think I'd make the codes at least four digits or you could just run through them all."
Jacqueline says, "This was very fun and omg we finished within two hours for once."
Jacqueline throws confetti.
Perry says, "IMO it was way too easy for my liking."
DavidW says, "cheers echo"
Pinkunz says, "You could ask only for the player's name, and then encode that information into the tale end of the player codes."
Perry says, "OH"
Jacqueline says (to Perry), "Hm. I think it was fine."
Perry says, "That's an amazing idea Pinkunz"
Pinkunz says, "Which then tells the other parser the name of the other player surreptitiously."
Perry says, "Yessss"
Pinkunz says, "Which would freak both players out."
Perry says, "Though math like that on the Z-machine can be painful sometimes"
Perry says, "But that should be doable; it's not like it'd rely on floating point."
Pinkunz says, "Just code A-Z as 00-25"
Jacqueline exclaims, "L8! B4!"
Perry says, "Would need to add a digit or two to keep the space for the codes themselves."
DavidW says, "U1!"
Perry says, "Or could have each code's last ≈ 3 bits encode part of each letter."
Pinkunz says, "Not a huge problem. I could see players tolerating up to 8-ish numbers before getting annoyed."
Perry says, "I dunno, three digit numbers can keep pacing nice."
Perry says, "Plus it makes it less clear that they're also encoding your partner's name"
Perry says, "Ohhh"
Perry says, "Except error detection"
DavidW has arrived. Pinkunz says, "If you wanted to be super clever, you could encode game events into the code."
Perry says, "So you'd need a parity bit probably in case you get the last digit wrong"
Pinkunz has arrived. Perry says, "Otherwise if I do 127 instead of 128 stuff would get funky"
gadzoks has arrived. Pinkunz says, "I liked it, fwiw."
Perry says, "Me too. Just wanted harder puzzles. And more puzzles."
Pinkunz says, "I think it has a TON of unrealized potential."
Perry says, "100%"
DavidW says, "It would be nice to see more two-player games in this format."
gadzoks says, "Yeah, a longer game done the same way would be fun."
Pinkunz asks, "A-synchronous?"
Perry says, "Tempted to try implementing a POC in Dialog now."
Pinkunz asks, "Because others have done server games, right?"
Pinkunz says, "Like MoyTW's game in the 2022 SpringThing."
Pinkunz says, "Seems like this eliminates alot of syncing and maintenance headaches. It is also more robust from an archival viewpoint."
DavidW says, "I'm gonna stop my log."
Perry says, "Probably the hardest thing about this is scaling up to harder puzzles that are a bit more generous in the order of steps you take and what you send over."
Pinkunz says, "You don't have to sync two Inform games either."
Perry says, "You'd have to basically design everything around a giant state machine with really limited information flow between two pieces."
Pinkunz says, "You could have a dial in a Twine game paired with a parser game."
DavidW asks (of Jacqueline), "I'll send my log to your gmail at jacqueline.a.lott?"
Pinkunz says, "Could be a neat way to get parserheads to work/play with Twineheads."
Perry says, "But I bet if you're really clever with the steganography aspect of the codes you could do some really really insane stuff."
Pinkunz says (to Perry), "That's where my brain is going."
Perry says, "OH especially because the encoding space actually is quite large since you know what point in the game the other person is."
Pinkunz exclaims, "Exactly!"
Perry says, "So the same code in two different places could do different things."
Pinkunz says, "Most of the gamestates are already known."
Perry says, "But you'd want a LOT of error correction to ensure you don't accidentally put in the wrong thing"
Pinkunz says, "Use the telemere bit."
Pinkunz says, "Have the beginning and end of the code be garbage."
Pinkunz says, "It only reads the middle 5 numbers."
DavidW says (to Jacquline), "sent"
Perry asks, "Or like a three/four bit CRC?"
Pinkunz says, "That'd probably be more elegant, yeah."
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Yes, that's the right address. Thanks."
Jacqueline says, "Timing"
Pinkunz says, "This reminds me of the Great Hat Mystery, on steroids."
DavidW says, "Just hope in the sequel, we can help those poor rock-laying chickens."
Jacqueline says, "For reals."
Perry says, "Or they confused the chickens with guinea fowl whose eggs basically are rocks"
Pinkunz asks, "I wonder if we see the frog splattoed outside when we leave?"
Perry says, "Noooooo"
Pinkunz says, "Suicidal froggie."
DavidW says, "Probably a frog species that can use its mouth as a parachute."
Pinkunz says, "Probably not, as this is AmandaB's game."
Pinkunz says, ","
Pinkunz says (to DW), "Agreed."
Perry says, "Also, a version that isn't co-op would be neat. Like where you both one to escape but want to stop the other. At the start you have to work with each other, but then you have to do some mindgames at the end on when to betray the other or something."
Perry asks, "Might be tricky to design well, but couuuuld work?"
Pinkunz says, "If you wanted to be crazy, you aren't limited to two parties."
gadzoks asks, "Red team and Blue team?"
Pinkunz says, "You could have something like Rat Race or It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."
Pinkunz says, "Each character would be a separate game file."
Pinkunz says, "Everyone fighting for the same prize in a cross country race."
DavidW says, "That would be wild."
Perry says, "Walkthrough: RUN. RUN. RUN. RUN."
Pinkunz says, "You could even write each one in a different engine."
gadzoks says, "I've wanted to make a multiplayer game like that, but had no where to start implementing it."
Pinkunz says, "Adventuron, TADS, Inform, Twine, etc."
Perry says, "Oi"
Perry says, "Dialog should be on that list"
Pinkunz says, "It is."
Perry says, "etc doesn't count"
Pinkunz says, "It does when I'm typing on a phone."
gadzoks says, "Could be a collaborative project, with a different author for each engine."
Pinkunz says (to Gadzoks), "That's what I was thinking. Like a Cragne Manor project."
DavidW says, "oh yeah, nothing to prevent the storyfiles being in different systems."
Pinkunz says, "This could be fun."
DavidW says, "There have been serial games where it's one-player and you use a code from the end of the first game to unlock the start of the second."
Pinkunz asks, "Doesn't that guarantee a diminishing audience with each title?"
DavidW says, "yeah"
Pinkunz asks, "As attrition picks people off?"
Perry says, "Allow starting with a default code that encodes your last game as having made all of the worst possible choices."
Perry says, "Killing the fly, letting the frog splat, etc."
Perry says, "Then mock the player for those actions."
Pinkunz says (to Perry), "Hah! I like that."
Pinkunz says, "Elegant fix."
Perry says, "That'd encourage anyone who tries to start in the middle to get so mad at their past self that they go back to the first game before doing the second actually increasing the audience."
Pinkunz says, "Agreed"
DavidW says, "hm. You could have a quest game where each member of the party has a solo prequel game of their own, and then the big game where codes from those games add them into your party."
DavidW says, "That doesn't even have to be multiple story files, even."
gadzoks says, "If you wanted a surreal game, you could do a broken telephone sort of project where each author only had a vague idea of what the previous game was about."
DavidW says, "That's sorta how Nord and Bert worked."
gadzoks says, "Though that would mean you couldn't align the code properly like you'd need for a game like this one."
gadzoks says, "Or what the other projects were about, in case of a collaborative multiplayer game."
gadzoks says, "Is what I meant."
Pinkunz asks (of DW), "That's the Marvel Model, no?"
Pinkunz says, "Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, etc, all get their own films."
Pinkunz asks, "Then all together in Avengers?"
DavidW says, "oh, I guess."
Pinkunz says, "It works, obviously."
DavidW says, "It's difficult to build up a superhero universe, but that seems to be the preferred method."
DavidW says, "They had to do *something* to avoid re-telling Batman's or Spider-Man's story every single time."
Perry finds it easier to just not bother watching them.
Pinkunz says, "Could tell the Spider-Man story from the POV of the spider. Seems to get a raw deal in most tellings."
Jacqueline says, "Have a great week, everyone."
Pinkunz exclaims, "You as well, Jacq. Thanks for driving!"
DavidW asks, "well, the spider bit a girl as well, and I think she's called Silk?"
Pinkunz says (to DW), "You too."
DavidW says, "yes, thanks all."
gadzoks says, "My dog was just woken up by the thunder, so I need to go console him."
Pinkunz says, "Bye Gadzoks."
Pinkunz says, "And I'm assuming everyone else."
Pinkunz says, "Not sure when you cut the transcript on these things, Jacq."
Pinkunz asks, "How do you decide that?"
Perry says, "Ten minutes before someone brings up error correction codes probably."
Pinkunz asks, "Is it immediately after the game ends, or when the discussion goes too far afield, or when everyone leaves?"
Roger disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again. DavidW says, "It varies based on how interesting or relevant it seems to be, I think."
DavidW says, "There's no hard rule."
Pinkunz says, "Just curious."
gadzoks says, "Adios all."
