ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Blossom by Olaf Nowacki
As played on ifMUD on August 20, 2023

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Blossom written by Olaf Nowacki. The Blossom was released as part of the 2023 IntroComp. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF | Preface
CF |
CF | This IF is neither finished nor polished. The story is not going
CF | anywhere yet. (But if it feels like it is: Even better.) Many commands
CF | lack the right feedback. There are bugs. Still, the basic idea should
CF | become clear and whether it's worth pursuing further I leave to your
CF | judgment.
CF |
CF | The form of the game is a diary. Each round is one day long. This
CF | results in a few differences to other parser-based IF: You don't walk
CF | around as usual. Instead, the following form is used: GO TO <LOCATION>
CF | or VISIT <PERSON>. Also, you don't pick up or drop objects, because
CF | that wouldn't fit the diary format either, so that happens
CF | automatically.
CF |
CF | Repetitions and anything that breaks the fourth wall should be masked
CF | or avoided to preserve the form. This is probably not entirely
CF | possible, but I want to push it as far as I can. I would like to take
CF | this opportunity to thank Daniel Stelzer and Drew Cook! With their
CF | advice on intfiction.org, they have given me the basis on which all
CF | the standard feedback is intercepted.
CF |
CF | You'll do me a big favor if you type "script" first and send me your
CF | transcript (along with any feedback and ideas you may have) to
CF | olaf.nowacki@gmail.com!

CF | June 25, 1883 — I deliberately chose a very simple room for I want
CF | nothing to distract me from writing, and I found more than I was
CF | looking for in Mrs. Unbehagen's house. It is just a small square room
CF | with a small window overlooking the street. Now I'm sitting at a desk
CF | right under the window on the chair in front of it. Behind me is my
CF | bed against the bare wall and otherwise there is only the door. The
CF | rent is definitely too much for what I get, but included are three
CF | meals a day and I get a big jug of water, for drinking and for the
CF | most necessary hygienic measures. I don't need a closet, because I
CF | only have two sets of personal linen. One of them I wear, the other is
CF | with Mrs. Unbehagen in the laundry and as soon as she gives it back to
CF | me clean, I give her the other. As you can see, I've thought of
CF | everything. Apart from visiting the privy, which is located in the
CF | stairwell, I don't have to leave the room if I don't want to.

DavidW says, "fine with me. godspeed and all that."
Jade says, "slow is good for me"

CF | there are my diary, a pile of paper, an inkwell with a quill and a

CF | second set of underwear, which is just with Mrs. Unbehagen.
CF |
CF | Mrs. Unbehagen told me about her other tenant. His name is Herr Oskar

CF | Who

CF | produce something bigger, better than them?
CF |
CF | And have I thus reached the bottom of my self-knowledge? A ridiculous
CF | question with the shortest possible answer there is.
CF |
CF | Before I moved into this room, Valerie had indicated in advance that

CF | > WRITE NOVEL
CF |
CF |
CF | July 2 — Today I was finally ready to start writing. I had thought of
CF | an excellent opening sentence and was just about to dip the quill into
CF | the inkwell when there was a knock at the door. It couldn't be Mrs.
CF | Unbehagen, because at this time she always does her purchases.
CF | Besides, she never knocks before entering the room. After a moment's
CF | hesitation, I rose to open the door.
CF |
CF | In the narrow hallway stood Valerie with a potted plant in her hands.
CF | I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't express my joy adequately. She
CF | set the plant down on my desk and let her eyes roam over my sparse
CF | room. Finally, she looked me in the eye and said, "I bought this at
CF | the harbour from a sailor overseas. He said it was an extraordinary
CF | plant from the other side of the globe. I don't know if he was telling
CF | the truth, but I've never seen such a plant. Hopefully it will inspire
CF | your writing."
CF |
CF | I would rather have had a photo of her for inspiration, but of course
CF | I didn't say that. I grabbed her hand and wanted to caress it, but she
CF | shyly withdrew, saying she had to leave before the landlady came back.
CF | I asked her if she was coming to see me again, but she avoided my gaze
CF | and just murmured, "Maybe." Then she was gone again, leaving me alone
CF | with the plant.
CF |
CF | A little later, Mrs. Unbehagen entered my room and asked if I had
CF | received any lady visitors. That was strictly forbidden. I lied and
CF | claimed that my cousin had brought me my beloved potted plant, which I
CF | needed for writing. She replied that she hoped I did not intend to
CF | smoke the plant. That too, she said, was strictly forbidden.
CF |
CF | I tried to appease her by saying that I would never smoke plants, only
CF | tobacco. She then parted with a sceptical look and narrowed eyes. I
CF | sat down at my desk again and reached for the quill. My brilliant
CF | opening sentence I had forgotten by then.
CF |
CF | Suddenly I have doubts about whether I am at all suited to writing.
CF |
CF | Constantly yapping dogs in the neighborhood, it sounds like a whole
CF | pack. I can then hardly grasp a clear thought.

CF |
CF | July 3 — Today I was very productive, I thought about my novel all
CF | day. I imagined many of its facets in my mind:
CF | — magnificent gardens,
CF | — male mermaids and
CF | — carriages with wings.
CF |
CF | All this will somehow become part of the story. I just have to put the
CF | pieces together.
CF |
CF | Someone upstairs is playing the piano, or something like that. I
CF | probably shouldn't listen so closely so as not to distract myself from
CF | my work.

CF |
CF |
CF | July 4 — This day I have spent lying on the bed, albeit not to think,
CF | but to listen. And I must say, it was most enlightening. Most of the
CF | time, you can hear Mrs. Unbehagen cursing in her living room when
CF | she's not out and about. Her other lodger, Mr. Sala, is usually at
CF | home and frequently plays the piano or something similar. Every now
CF | and then you hear someone farting in the privy, and I don't want to
CF | make any assumptions about which of the two it is. But beyond that, it
CF | seems as if the whole house is crackling discreetly. As if many very
CF | small things were moving very carefully in the wall. Now that I've
CF | heard it once I can't not hear it.
CF |
CF | Something is moving in the house across the street. I often see the

CF |
CF |
CF | July 8 — A bare stem rises from the centre of the pot, at the base of
CF | which are a few misshapen leaves. There is no flower at the top of the
CF | stem. Possibly it has fallen off or the plant never intended to sprout
CF | a flower. While feeling the crippled tip of the dead stem, I must have
CF | cut or pricked myself, because suddenly there was a drop of blood on
CF | my finger. It dripped onto the plant and ran down the stem into the
CF | dry soil of the pot.
CF |
CF | This plant is unimpressive, although it is very ugly, and still
CF | attracts far too much of my attention. I fear Valerie has been
CF | deceived. Why was Valerie at the harbour in the first place? That is
CF | not an appropriate environment for her! And then she lets herself be
CF | approached by a strange sailor! Or did even she approach him? I can't
CF | get my head around it.

CF | > VISIT UNBEHAGEN
CF |
CF |
CF | July 11 — In my search for variety and inspiration, I came up with
CF | the
CF | idea that I could pay a visit to my landlady. Naive me. I knocked on
CF | her door, entered and wished her a good day. Horrified, she looked at
CF | me and immediately began to clamor; that I "really couldn't complain",
CF | what "came into my head to attack her like that?", that "she had it
CF | hard enough anyway" and that my rent was "anything but too high".
CF | Mumbling incoherent excuses, I stumbled backwards out of her parlor. I
CF | was so ashamed that I had to remain in the stairwell for a good while
CF | until I had regained my composure.
CF |
CF | The flower of the plant has reached the size of a tulip, and it seems
CF | that it is now fully grown. But beautiful to look at it is not, with
CF | its crooked and tubular black leaves.
CF |
CF | I could swear someone was in my room last night. I woke up and felt
CF | the door close. Then I heard a slight pattering, but I couldn't make
CF | out where it was coming from. I couldn't see anything either, it was

CF |
CF | July 12 — My desire to see Valerie is very strong. If it were
CF | possible, I would pay her a visit at her family's home, but alas,
CF | alas, etiquette forbids it as long as we are not engaged. I should
CF | certainly try to use my longing for her to finish my novel.
CF |
CF | Today it was quite loud at the door, that is, Mrs. Unbehagen was very
CF | loud. But I have to start at the beginning. There was a rather strong
CF | knocking at the door, several men were there and I think it was the
CF | police. They spoke very forcefully to Mrs. Unbehagen. She clearly
CF | denied several times, the rest was hardly understandable. I heard only
CF | "no more eyes" and that makes no sense. But then Mrs. Unbehagen howled
CF | loudly and had to be calmed down by the men. I saw the men standing in
CF | front of the house across the street for quite a while. When they were
CF | gone again, I wanted to talk to Mrs. Unbehagen, but she has entrenched
CF | herself in her living room and does not react. I would really like to

CF |
CF |
CF | July 15 — There lies my masterpiece, my astounding narrative that
CF | will
CF | move the world and make of me a real man who dwells among the other
CF | great minds in the spheres of intellect. Only one small step is
CF | missing: the words must be written down. I feel them gathering inside
CF | me like water behind a dam. They become more and more, they want to
CF | flow out onto the blank paper, creating a pressure that makes my hand
CF | tremble. The only thing that it still needs, that the mighty words can
CF | pave their way, is their leader! A first stroke, a single letter!
CF | Others will follow him, together they become a word! An example for
CF | others, a first sentence, then the dam breaks and in unbridled
CF | eruption a torrent of paragraphs and finally chapters until all pages
CF | are filled to bursting and only with the closing point the force of

CF | that I had already written something about it 12 days ago. That would
CF | have been embarrassing if I had written the same thing again!
CF |

CF |
CF |
CF | July 17 — I am well aware that I should be sitting at my desk writing
CF | most of the time. But writing requires a lot of thinking, and thinking
CF | requires an ideal supply of blood to the brain, which is ensured when
CF | the blood can flow easily into the head. Therefore, I need to lie down
CF | to think and the best place for that, in my small chamber is on the
CF | bed. Therefore, I probably spend 12 hours on the bed every day. So in
CF | total, that is together with my nightly sleep, that is a good 20 hours
CF | in a lying position. No wonder writing is so popular among the
CF | artistically talented population.
CF |
CF | My fear about the flower size was unjustified. It has disappeared into
CF | thin air. Yes, really, because otherwise the petals should be lying
CF | somewhere. The stem is still there and looks like it did the day
CF | Valerie brought the plant. I wonder if someone snuck into my room last
CF | night to steal the flower? If so, then that person has the worst
CF | conceivable sense of taste. (I know that sounds a lot like Mrs.

CF | Technically, it's a very quiet street that I'm looking at. Still, the
CF | sporadic pedestrians distract me. This bastard, who shoots by with his

CF | But the most unpleasant thing is that in the house across the street

CF | would it also be desirable? Then I think about it a lot and always
CF | come to the same conclusion: I just don't know. I could try to find

CF |
CF | Today there was already again some quarrel. How am I supposed to be
CF | able to work like this? Again, Mrs. Discomfort was involved. But this
CF | time the other party was Mr. Sala and the argument took place in the
CF | stairwell. Mr. Sala was very agitated and said that he would no longer
CF | "get things out of the basement" for the landlady and that he would
CF | move out in general. I find this childish behavior, and for once I
