ClubFloyd Transcript:
Who Kidnapped Mother Goose? by Garry Francis
As played on ifMUD on June 9, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Who Kidnapped Mother Goose? written by Garry Francis. Who Kidnapped Mother Goose? was released as part of the Text Adventure Literacy Jam 2024, in which it took first place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

ANOTHER WARNING! A lot (most!) of the transcripts contained on this site are, shall we say, family-friendly. This is not one of those family-friendly transcripts. Just so we're clear.

CF |
CF | You feel your brain rattling around inside your skull. Someone is
CF | shaking you.
CF |
CF | "Wake up! Wake up!"
CF |
CF | You rub your eyes and squint in the bright morning sunlight. You
CF | vaguely make out the silhouette of your next-door neighbour, Peter the
CF | pumpkin eater.
CF |
CF | "Mother Goose has been kidnapped!"
CF |
CF | That catches your attention. You spring out of bed. Mother Goose is
CF | your other next-door neighbour and a dear friend. Once Peter sees that
CF | you're out of bed, he quickly loses interest in the emergency and goes
CF | to tend to his vegetable garden. You, however, must rescue Mother
CF | Goose!
CF |
CF | [You're about to embark on an adventure. You can move around,
CF | examine things and manipulate things by typing simple text commands of
CF | one or more words, usually starting with a verb. The tutorial will
CF | offer suggestions to get you started. Commands in the tutorial are
CF | shown in upper case, but you can enter them in lower case, if you
CF | prefer. You can turn the tutorial off by typing TUTORIAL OFF and turn
CF | it back on by typing TUTORIAL ON. Good luck.]

DavidW says, "yes, this one is supposed to be beginner-friendly. I felt we needed something easier than the Bad IF games today."
Knight_Otu asks, "Peter, have you considered calling the police?"
bg asks, "who are we?"
Lancelot says, "lol the bad if games yeah some of them are not friendly at all... which is kinda the point"

CF | wrote a nursery rhyme about you sitting in a corner and pulling a plum

CF | Town Square
CF | The town square is the focal point of the town. Most town squares have
CF | streets running off in all directions, but your little town could only
CF | afford streets to the north and south. To compensate for the lack of
CF | streets, there's a very popular tavern to the west, which is
CF | convenient for you, as your house is to the east.

CF |
CF | It's a typical old-English fountain where the locals get their water.
CF | It doesn't have any intricate sculptures or water spewing forth from
CF | various inappropriate places. It's also used as a wishing well by the
CF | locals. The fountain contains some water and some coins.

CF | last time the fountain thief raided the town. (Someone suggested that
CF | the fountain thief was actually the local kids, but they vehemently

CF | Mother Goose follows you.
CF |
CF | East Side of Chasm
CF | The forest ends at the east side of a deep chasm. You hear the roar of
CF | a river coming from the depths of the chasm. Across the chasm to the
CF | west, you can see the mouth of a cave in the steep mountainside. The
CF | whole scene looks none-too-friendly. Retreating back to the east will
CF | return you to the forest.
CF |
CF | You can see a bridge and Mother Goose here.
CF |
CF | Mother Goose turns to you, throws her arms around you and gives you a
CF | big kiss. "This is all too much for me. I need a good cup of tea, so
CF | I'm going back to town to see Polly. You have to find a way to keep
CF | that ogre away once and for all. I see that you found my keg of
CF | gunpowder. Perhaps you can put it on the bridge and blow up the
CF | bridge." With that, she runs off towards the town.

CF |
CF | You put the keg of gunpowder on the bridge.

CF |
CF | > LIGHT KEG WITH MATCH
CF |
CF | The wick is flickering with a blue flame. You'd better get out of here
CF | before the gunpowder blows up!
CF |
CF | > Knight_Otu says, "Not even asking why we have her keg."

CF | Deep Forest
CF | The sunlight has trouble penetrating the dense canopy of the trees
CF | this deep in the forest. Rarely does anyone venture this far for fear
CF | of the ogres inhabiting the deeper recesses of the forest. The path
CF | has virtually disappeared, but the undergrowth to the west has
CF | recently been trampled and the trees have broken branches. Your acute
CF | powers of deduction tell you that something like an ogre went that
CF | way, whereas your acute sense of survival tells you to head back south
CF | to the safety of the town.

CF | Forest
CF | Trees extend in all directions and birds can be heard chirping nearby.
CF | Dead leaves cover the forest floor and hide the path that leads deeper
CF | into the forest to the north. The dirt path to the south leads back
CF | towards the town. A large oak tree on the east side of the path is
CF | known to be a favourite climbing tree of the town's children.
CF |
CF | You can see a old oak tree here.

CF |
CF | > S
CF |
CF | Cobblestone Street
CF | This is the northern end of the town. The cobblestone street leads
CF | south towards the town square. The cobblestones to the north give way
CF | to a path that leads into the forest. Remnants of the forest are
CF | scattered about on both sides of the street. A building is nestled
CF | amongst the trees to the west and a house is to the east.
CF |
CF | KABOOM! The gunpowder blows the bridge into a zillion pieces. You
CF | shield your head as pieces of shattered timber rain down on you. You
CF | look back and see that the bridge is gone and the ogre is roaring in
CF | frustration on the other side of the chasm.
CF |
CF | Congratulations! You have rescued Mother Goose and the town is now
CF | safe from the ogre.

CF | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE, UNDO the last move or QUIT? Jade says, "cool"
Jacqueline says, "yay"
Jade says, "well done"
DavidW says, "and good timing too."
Jacqueline asks, "I would say we are awesome, but we're kind of a murderer and what the heck is the deal with Peter's wife?"
Knight_Otu says, "So, we murdered a troll, kept quiet about another murder, and condemned two ogres to starvation. A productive day."
Jacqueline asks, "Like, did that get resolved?"
Pinkunz says, "I also suggested murdering someone in their sleep with explosives."
DavidW says (to Jacqueline), "no, we're all hush-a-bye about that"
Lancelot says, "well played"
Jacqueline says (to DW), "Wild."
Jacqueline says, "I wonder if that was going to be a B-Plot and then the author ran out of time."
Knight_Otu says, "Also we bombed local infrastructure, I guess."
Jacqueline says (to KO), "We did."
Pinkunz says, "I thought Mother Goose was the terrorist, but it turns out we were the terrorists all along."
DavidW says, "I was all ready to find out that Mother Goose secretly adopted the ogre child."
Lancelot asks, "hmm that bridge blowing message is kinda peculiar though... we are back at the village and can see the bridge from there???"
Knight_Otu says, "We kind of fell a ways from last game, where we could pretend to be the most important person of the universe."
DavidW says, "I wonder why MG had gunpowder in her basement."
Lancelot says, "true that ..."
Pinkunz says, "I wonder if there's a way to get Justice for Mrs. Eater."
DavidW says, "maybe in a sequel"
Pinkunz asks, "Did we use all of our inventory?"
DavidW says, "And we did nothing with the pail or the water."
DavidW says (to Pinkunz), "not sure"
Pinkunz asks, "Red herring?"
Lancelot says, "possibly"
DavidW says, "I didn't have any herring."
Knight_Otu says, "I fully expected we'd need to wash the doll in the fountain to get rid of the forest smell."
Pinkunz says, "Red or otherwise"
DavidW says, "We didn't use the turnip, but I think we used everything else."
Pinkunz asks, "Maybe poison the turnip for Peter?"
Jacqueline says, "Well, still. That was a 'fun' diversion."
Knight_Otu asks, "We didn't use the turnip. Might have been an alternative for the rat?"
DavidW says, "maybe"
DavidW says, "For the vegan troll"
Knight_Otu says, "Right, we also killed the rat."
Jacqueline says, "Thanks for the game, folks! See you next week."
Pinkunz says, "Troll accused us of bribery, but also still took the bribe."
Knight_Otu asks, "All in all, I guess our banter earns this one the not safe stamp?"
Jade says, "bye"
Jacqueline says, "Yeah. I'll go in now and put a reminder at the top of that transcript."
DavidW says, "thanks all. See you all next week!"
Knight_Otu exclaims, "Good night, and thanks for driving, David!"
Lancelot says, "yeah it seems to advertise murderers can get away with things"
DavidW says, "you're welcome!"
Pinkunz says, "Thanks for driving, DW. See everyone next week."
Lancelot exclaims, "thx for driving! it was a fun session!"
Lancelot says, "bye all"
*** LATER THAT DAY ***
asparagus asks, "*wakes up bleary eyed*. What'd I miss?"
DavidW says, "We played Who Kidnapped Mother Goose?"
Jacqueline says, "A wholesome game."
asparagus asks, "Don't know that one. I might try it myself before I read the transcript. Good session?"
Jacqueline says, "... sure."
Jacqueline says, "We did have fun."
Jacqueline says, "It is not what you expect."
DavidW says, "It was a little surprising."
Jacqueline says, "Yeah. That's a good way to put it."
