ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Samurai and the Kappa by Garry Francis
As played on ifMUD on July 7-14, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Samurai and the Kappa written by Garry Francis. The Samurai and the Kappa was a particpant in ParserComp 2024, in which it took fourth place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

ANOTHER WARNING! A lot (most!) of the transcripts contained on this site are, shall we say, family-friendly. This is not one of those family-friendly transcripts. Just so we're clear.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

*** SESSION 1 ***
DavidW says, "I found some ParserComp games we can play."
Jacqueline says, "Oh, cool. I was seaching through Neo-Twiny Jam stuff, but of course it's mostly Twine. We played one of those last week, though, and it was ... it was. haha"
DavidW says, "There's an Andrew Schultz game called Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens. I can't wait to see what that one's about. Impossible to guess."
Jacqueline says, "Ah, yeah. Saw that on IFDB. I suspect it'll be more than one session, but we could fire that up."
DavidW says, "There's also a new Garry Francis game called The Samurai and the Kappa, so we can have another session of Asian mythology."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask samuraikappa"

CF | Ever since the Battle of Sekigahara and the rise of the Tokugawa
CF | shogunate, the samurai have gradually lost their military function to
CF | become courtiers, bureaucrats and administrators. This life was not
CF | for you, so you find yourself wandering from town to town looking for
CF | work where your sword skills are valued. There's always plenty of work
CF | escorting dignitaries, or seeking out weapon smugglers and bandits.
CF |
CF | Late one evening you wander into a small town. As it's not a
CF | post-town, it doesn't have a honjin for high-ranking travellers, so
CF | you enter the lobby of a hatagoya that faces the street. You're
CF | greeted by the innkeeper, who bows deeply and invites you inside. You
CF | don't need much coaxing, as you're looking forward to a bath, a meal
CF | and a good night's sleep.
CF |
CF | The innkeeper enters the inn to make arrangements, leaving you to
CF | remove your waraji.
CF |
CF | [You're about to embark on an adventure. You can move around,
CF | examine things and manipulate things by typing simple text commands of
CF | one or more words, usually starting with a verb. The tutorial will
CF | offer suggestions to get you started. Commands in the tutorial are
CF | shown in upper case, but you can enter them in lower case, if you
CF | prefer. You can turn the tutorial off by typing TUTORIAL OFF and turn
CF | it back on by typing TUTORIAL ON. Good luck.]
CF |
CF | [WARNING: This game contains nudity, mild sexual references and
CF | adult content. Do not play if you're likely to be offended by
CF | this.]

CF | Lobby
CF | The covered lobby has an earthen floor where guests can take off their
CF | footwear while protected during inclement weather. Swallows and house
CF | martins have also sought shelter here by building their nests in the
CF | rafters and under the eaves. The honjin (or chief inn) would have an
CF | entrance courtyard closed to outside view by a wall and a substantial
CF | gate, whereas this hatagoya (or small inn) has just an opening
CF | directly onto the street to the west. The entry to the inn is up a
CF | step to the north.

DavidW says, "I'm not sure."

CF | Your name is Haruko Tadamori, the last in a long line of proud and
CF | honourable samurai in the Haruko family.

CF | [When you start a new game, it's also a good idea to take an
CF | inventory to see if you're carrying anything. Try INVENTORY (or
CF | I).]

CF |
CF | You're carrying a pair of waraji (worn), your money pouch (worn), your
CF | kamishimo (worn), your katana and your tachi.
CF |
CF | [You can take a closer look at anything you're carrying or wearing
CF | using EXAMINE (or X). Try X KAMISHIMO.]
CF |
CF | > DavidW says, "I know a katana is a sword. Dunno about the other stuff."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x waraji"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 3
CF |
CF | > X WARAJI
CF |
CF | The waraji are sandals made from rice straw rope. They're very
CF | comfortable, but they wear out quickly if you do a lot of walking. If
CF | it was winter, you'd be wearing tabi socks or the more expensive
CF | kegutsu horse mane shoes, to keep your feet warm.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline smiles. "Same."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x pouch"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 4
CF |
CF | > X POUCH
CF |
CF | It's a small animal skin pouch with a draw cord. You can't see inside,
CF | since the money pouch is closed.
CF |
CF | [The pouch is apparently closed. When you find something that's
CF | closed, you can try opening it. Try OPEN POUCH.]

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "open pouch"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 5
CF |
CF | > OPEN POUCH
CF |
CF | You open the money pouch, revealing 10 silver coins.
CF |
CF | [The pouch is a container. You can take objects out of a container
CF | using GET or TAKE. Try GET COIN.]

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x coin"

CF | These are the silver coins that you've earned in the past few weeks.
CF | There are 10 left.
CF |

CF | yourself. EXAMINE can be abbreviated to X. Try X ME.]

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "close pouch"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 7
CF |
CF | > CLOSE POUCH
CF |
CF | You close the money pouch.

CF |
CF | [When you've finished examining things, you can move around using
CF | any of the four cardinal compass directions such as GO NORTH (or
CF | NORTH). These can be abbreviated to N, S, E and W. The location
CF | description will tell you which directions you can go. You can also
CF | use verbs like IN, OUT, ENTER and EXIT when appropriate.]
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x kamishimo"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 9
CF |
CF | > X KAMISHIMO
CF |
CF | It's a three-part outfit, consisting of a kataginu, a kimono and a
CF | hakama.
CF |
CF | [Every time you discover something new, you should EXAMINE it to
CF | see if it reveals any more details or any clues. Try X KATAGINU, X

CF | inventory.]
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x kataginu"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 10
CF |
CF | > X KATAGINU
CF |
CF | The kataginu is the outer coat or vest of your clothing. It's open
CF | under the arms with wide shoulders, making it the more obvious sign of
CF | your rank as a samurai. It's made from a purplish-grey hemp, which is
CF | a very hardy material.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x kimono"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 11
CF |
CF | > X KIMONO
CF |
CF | The kimono is the inner, shirt-like garment that covers your torso.
CF | It's made of white silk, which is cool in the summer.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x hakama"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 12
CF |
CF | > X HAKAMA
CF |
CF | The hakama is like a baggy pair of trousers, made from the same
CF | material as the kataginu.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x katana"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 13
CF |
CF | > X KATANA
CF |
CF | The katana is the shorter of your two swords. It has a curved blade
CF | that was crafted by a master swordsmith and handed down to you by your
CF | father. It's worn with the edge up.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "The *shorter* of our two swords? Huh"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x tachi"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 14
CF |
CF | > X TACHI
CF |
CF | The tachi is the longer of your two swords. It has a curved blade that
CF | was crafted by a master swordsmith and handed down to you by your
CF | father. It's worn with the edge down.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "huh: [LINK]"
DavidW says, "When combined, they become super-scissors."

DavidW says, "I feel that they will. This inn has a bath and there was a nudity caution."

DavidW says, "well, let's see"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "remove waraji"
CF ] Lobby Moves: 18
CF |
CF | > REMOVE WARAJI
CF |
CF | You take off the waraji.
CF |
CF | [You removed the waraji, but you're still holding them. You can
CF | drop objects when they're no longer needed. Try DROP WARAJI or DROP
CF | THEM. You can get them again later using GET or TAKE WARAJI.]

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "n"

CF |
CF | Hatagoya
CF | This hatagoya (or small inn) is typical of many that you've seen in
CF | other small towns. It's comprised of a raised timber platform covered
CF | with tatami matting. There's a small ash pit sunk into the floor with
CF | a kettle of hot water suspended over the coals for preparing tea. A
CF | sliding paper screen to the east conceals the guest rooms beyond. The
CF | exit from the hatagoya is to the south.
CF |
CF | You can see an innkeeper and a maid here.
CF |
CF | [If you come across another character in the game, apart from
CF | examining them, you should also try talking to them. Try TALK TO
CF | INNKEEPER and TALK TO MAID.]
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x innkeeper"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 21
CF |
CF | > X INNKEEPER
CF |
CF | The innkeeper is a portly man with short, thin hair and a bald scalp.
CF | He wears an apron that tries hard to hide his pot belly.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x apron"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 22
CF |
CF | > X APRON
CF |
CF | The innkeeper's apron is stained and grimy. It's tied above his belly.
CF |
CF | > DavidW says, "If we're lucky, we may get to wear that."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x maid"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 23
CF |
CF | > X MAID
CF |
CF | The maid is very pretty, but she looks too young to be a maid. You
CF | wonder how old she is.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x pit"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 24
CF |
CF | > X PIT
CF |
CF | The coals in the ash pit are glowing red hot.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x kettle"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 25
CF |
CF | > X KETTLE
CF |
CF | It looks like a permanent fixture. As it's hot, you'd better leave it
CF | alone.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "talk to innkeeper"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 26
CF |
CF | > TALK TO INNKEEPER
CF |
CF | The innkeeper bows and welcomes you to his inn. "My name is Nakaari.
CF | I'm the owner of this inn. We'll do everything we can to ensure that
CF | you have a pleasant stay. The cost is one silver coin for a hot bath,
CF | a meal and a bed for the night. It's an extra silver coin if you avail
CF | yourself of any extra 'service'. You can settle your account in the
CF | morning. If there's anything you need, just ask me or your maid. She's
CF | waiting for you over there."
CF |
CF | [As well as talking to the innkeeper, you can ask him about
CF | things. Try ASK HIM ABOUT MAID, then ASK HIM ABOUT HIMSELF.]
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "Goodness."
says, "Welcome to ClubFloyd: AIF Edition."
Jacqueline says, "Let's ask him about stuff."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "The extra services don't *have* to be massages with happy endings."
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 26
CF |
CF | > THE EXTRA SERVICES DON'T *HAVE* TO BE MASSAGES WITH HAPPY ENDINGS.
CF |
CF | That's not a verb I recognise.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "haha"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask him about tea"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 27
CF |
CF | > ASK HIM ABOUT TEA
CF |
CF | "There's hot water in the kettle, but I'm out of tea leaves. I'm
CF | expecting a delivery in a few days."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "I don't think anyone puts the word service in square quotes for another reason..."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask him about extra service"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 28
CF |
CF | > ASK HIM ABOUT EXTRA SERVICE
CF |
CF | "Hey, don't ask me, ask your maid."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline frowns.
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "talk to maid"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 29
CF |
CF | > TALK TO MAID
CF |
CF | She bows and says, "My name is Mokuko. I'll be your maid for the
CF | evening. You can talk to me at any time. If there's anything you need,
CF | just ask me." She slides the paper screen open and gestures to the
CF | east. "The bath house is this way."
CF |
CF | [As well as talking to the maid, you can ask her about things. Try
CF | ASK HER ABOUT INNKEEPER, then ASK HER ABOUT HERSELF.]
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask him about maid"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 30

CF | require, if you ask her."
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about innkeeper"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 31
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT INNKEEPER
CF |
CF | "He's a very nice man. He gave me a job when my parents died. He's
CF | lived in this town all his life, so he knows about a lot of things.
CF | The locals say, 'If you need to know something, just ask the
CF | innkeeper'."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "Maybe we can be very noble and free the under-age maid from this life..."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about age"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 32
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT AGE
CF |
CF | "I'm 16 sir, but I'm very experienced."
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about inn"

CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT INN
CF |
CF | "A hatagoya is a small inn like this one."
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about town"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 34
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT TOWN
CF |
CF | "It's a pleasant little town. It's not a post-town, so it's not very
CF | busy."
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about job"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 35
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT JOB
CF |
CF | "I'm a maid. My job is to cater to all your needs, including any extra
CF | 'service' you may desire."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "There's that phrase again."
Jacqueline says, "Post-town"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about post-town"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 36
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT POST-TOWN
CF |
CF | "A post-town is a bigger town that has lodging for high-ranking
CF | travellers, like yourself. Post-towns must have at least one honjin or
CF | chief inn for those people to rest."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "They're laying it on thick about this 'service'"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about bath"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 37
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT BATH
CF |
CF | "The bath house is this way." She points to the east.
CF |
CF | > DavidW asks, "Should I ask about the service?"
Jacqueline says, "Ah. Thanks for the ask on post-town. I didn't think that'd be a topic."
DavidW says, "I didn't think it would be either, but I was pleasantly surprised."
Jacqueline grimmaces. "Sure. Sure, ask about the 'service'." She makes a weird face.
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask maid about service"
CF ] Hatagoya Moves: 38
CF |
CF | > ASK MAID ABOUT SERVICE
CF |
CF | She looks a little embarrassed. "Not here. Ask me again when we're in
CF | your room."
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "Now I need a bath."
DavidW says, "okay, even I'm making a face."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "e"
CF ] North Hall Moves: 39
CF |
CF | > E
CF |
CF | Mokuko follows you.
CF |
CF | North Hall
CF | This is the northern end of a short, narrow hallway. Its only purpose
CF | is to separate the rooms from the inn. This gives guests a feeling of
CF | privacy, although the paper walls do nothing to prevent sound
CF | travelling between the inn and the rooms. The hall continues south to
CF | your room. You can feel a steamy warmth coming from a room beyond the
CF | hall to the north. Another guest room is behind a closed sliding
CF | screen to the east and the inn is beyond the sliding screen to the
CF | west.
CF |
CF | You can see Mokuko here.
CF |
CF | > DavidW asks, "you just know that even if refuse to ask for the extra, we'll hear it from the other customer through the paper-thin walls?"
Jacqueline says, "That's what I'm thinking, unfortunately."
DavidW says, "We'll be in the bath, naked, the other customer will do something to the maid causing a scream, and we'll rush to her rescue, yes? That's my expectation now."
Jacqueline says, "Oh, maybe. Yeah."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "s"

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "n"
CF ] Bath House Moves: 42
CF |

CF |
CF | Mokuko follows you.
CF |
CF | Bath House
CF | The bath house is against an outer wall of the inn since the water in
CF | the bathtub is heated by lighting a fire underneath it through a small
CF | aperture from the outside. This reduces the risk of fire breaking out
CF | in the inn itself. When you've finished your bath, you can leave the
CF | bath house to the south.
CF |
CF | You can see Mokuko and a bath tub here.

CF |
CF | When she's finished, she giggles and says, "All done", then waits for

CF |
CF | With that, it eats the cucumber, which restores its strength, then
CF | dives into the river. You see its head bobbing above the river, with
CF | the bowl in its skull now full of life-giving water. It swims
