ClubFloyd Transcript:
Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens by Andrew Schultz
As played on ifMUD on July 14-21, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens written by Andrew Schultz. It was released as part of ParserComp 2024, and took 4th Place in the Classic Class. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF |
CF | Every few years your community of gnomes gets together for a feast of
CF | rememberance. Well, sort of.
CF |
CF | There is a central feast with a select few gnomes, not necessarily
CF | leaders, but those who complement each other well, and there are
CF | magical mirrors all over the kingdom that allow citizens to look in.
CF | [NOTE: when the prompt does not appear, it means
CF | you need to press any key to continue]
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF |
CF |
CF | It has a different theme every year, with different participants. This
CF | year, they are decided by the Loyal Leader (pretty high up in
CF | government, but not top banana,) who consults a large machine called
CF | the Royal Reader. But it is not that easy.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | It's revealed the process this year must've taken extra time, with a
CF | soil seeder. And people throughout the kingdom have found foil for the
CF | foil feeder.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | And precautions needed to be taken against a spoil-speeder, for
CF | obvious reasons.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | Then the Royal Reader was ready. It would perform inordinate
CF | calculations and spit out a name. That gnome would be in charge of
CF | gathering items for the feast. The items would be there, if the gnome
CF | were observant enough. It might be someone unexpected.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | That gnome turns out to be you. Most of your acquaintances can't
CF | believe it, for better or worse. Sure, you're nice and all, but you
CF | get distracted easily.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | But the Royal Reader has spoken. Or, well, made its verdict, being a
CF | machine and all. You take a lot of heat. You hear the loud whispers
CF | meant to be heard: YOU were chosen not to screw things up? The feast
CF | is in trouble! Lancelot says, "oh Andrew's game"
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | Gasps of disbelief ensue from people already disgusted you, of all
CF | gnomes, were chosen. The Royal Reader then loudly chugs and sputters
CF | to a halt, giving one last message: "Sown, see. Lonely. Own, eee!" The
CF | disgusted gnomes (especially Bowen B. and Joan G.) moan "ME!" in a
CF | last-ditch attempt for glory. It doesn't work. They introduce a
CF | resolution to relegate you to Zone Z, but you're surprised how quickly
CF | they're shouted down by the crowd: "Flown! Flee!" Lancelot says, "I beta tested this one so I'll shut p unless you need help"
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | It's a process that will take a while. You're given resources to
CF | explore the kingdom. On the way, you discover a place called Reeve
CF | Row, owned by Steve Stowe. He's looking to sell quickly. On further
CF | consultation with the Royal Reader, it responds "Buy base. Ply place.
CF | Aye, ace!"
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | Before leaving, elders furnish you with an odd item called a Leet
CF | Learner. You're not sure what it does. But apparently it's got a weird
CF | logical magic that helps humans or dwarves or elves figure the right
CF | words to say, or at least the right lengths.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.
CF ] 0/59-69
CF | Reeve Row is sparsely furnished, but you won't be staying there much.
CF | Even if you feel stuck there to begin with. You think of all the
CF | gnomes who have passed since the last feast. It takes a while. Then
CF | one day you know it is time to move on, even though you know you're
CF | forgetting someone important.
DavidW pushes the green 'space' button.

CF |
CF | Reeve Row
CF | You remember buying this from the old owner, Steve Stowe. He knew you
CF | were the right person to continue living here. But it feels empty now.
CF | You know you should go OUT sooner rather than later, but you
CF | don't feel confident enough. Boosting yourself with the right phrase
CF | might help.
CF |
CF | A rayed rug covers part of the floor here. It's oddly bumpy.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline asks, "lug rug?"
Lancelot asks, "it is called alliteration I believe? find words which sound similar?"
Roger says, "that's rhyming"
Jacqueline says, "Oh, is it illiteration rather than rhymes? Okay."
Roger says, "alliteration allows all apparent alphabets"
DavidW says, "uh, I think we need to be alliterative, rhyming with something in the location."
Lancelot says, "yeah it has to sound the same I thought thats alliteration"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x rug"
CF ] Reeve Row (Home, Haw) 0/59-69
CF |
CF | > X RUG
CF |
CF | You aren't big on decor, but Steve Stowe insisted you keep this rug.
CF | It would be useful, he said.
CF |
CF | There are a lot of bright rays on the rug. It's bumpy, but you're
CF | scared to look under it without knowing or figuring what the bump
CF | might be.
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "Alliteration is the same first letter."
Jacqueline says, "This is a bit more."
Lancelot says, "ok then alliteration and rhyme together"
DavidW says, "alliteration is based on sounds not letters"
Roger says, "oh"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "i"
CF ] Reeve Row (Home, Haw) 0/59-69
CF |
CF | > I
CF |
CF | [NOTE: X on its own may be more useful for the items you have,
CF | since it views the list you need for Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens.]

CF | a leet learner (on)
CF | Last Least Fast Feast
CF |
CF | > Jacqueline says, "Well, this looks like Reeve/Steve Row/Stowe."
Jacqueline says, "Last/Fast Least/Feast"
Lancelot says, "yeah and thats the kind of rhyming... TBH it was kinda hard on me but you're all English speakers"
Jacqueline says, "Yeah, so it's both alliteration and rhyme."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x feast"
CF ] Reeve Row (Home, Haw) 0/59-69
CF |
CF | > X FEAST
CF |
CF | Last Least Fast Feast is a vague description of the stuff you need for
CF | the end-of-year memorial feast. Perhaps they wanted to allow you
CF | artistic license, or perhaps they (or I) realized it'd not be a really
CF | fulfilling quest if they were specific. Or perhaps there's some weird
CF | obscure reason the feast tastes better or is more spiritually
CF | nourishing if it's prepared ad-hoc.
CF |
CF | ( - ) small drinking container(s)
CF | ( - ) large drink holder
CF | ( - ) cake, of course
CF | ( - ) an appetizer, sort of
CF | ( - ) greens
CF | ( - ) protein panorama
CF | ( - ) vast veggies
CF | ( - ) powdered drink mix
CF | ( - ) prevents sticking
CF | ( - ) liquid seasoning
CF | ( - ) tasty pastry
CF | (0/4) silverware and such
CF |
CF | You'll probably need to cook up some ingredients, but you don't have
CF | the right appliance(s), yet.

CF |
CF | It says LEET LEARNER/CHEAT CHURNER. It has two main settings:
CF | HUT! CAN! (on) and SHUT SCAN (off). It's currently on.
CF | LL/CC ON/OFF can turn it on or off.
CF |
CF | Also, to use it, LL (something). LL with no argument

CF |
CF | You can READ it for more detailed information, or HINT

CF |
CF | > PLAYED PLUG
CF |
CF | Ah, that's what the bump in the rayed rug is.
CF |
CF | A ray vanishes from the rug. Several rays on the rug (you'd say
CF | one-third) grow duller.
CF | [Your score just went up by one point.]
CF |
CF | You note the Leet Learner lights up briefly, and then a dot winks out.
CF | Scanning what you solved may give something different, now, and you
CF | suspect this will be the case every time you figure something out.
CF |

CF |
CF | Your rhyming attempts bring up nothing. Or, if you tried a standard
CF | verb--well, Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens has eliminated a lot
CF | of them, so you can focus on the puzzle verbs. VERBS will give
CF | a list of useful, non-puzzle-solving verbs.

CF | Lard, man. You're still not sure if you really need it, even if the
CF | cookbooks say you should. You've never had the guts to rebel and just

says, "So, I've uploaded two more games from ParserComp 2024 onto Floyd: Alphabet City and Mystery Isles. Assuming we're not testing something today, we might play one of those two."
DavidW says, "I, uh, finished playing Beef, Beans, Grief, Greens on my own."
Lancelot says, "okay"
Lancelot says, "I don't mind since I beta tested Andrew's game"
Lancelot says, "did you also find the bonus section below Wandering Where? Not sure if we had that in there last week"
DavidW says, "I found the existence of it but had to read Andrew's walkthrough to find out how to actually get there."
Lancelot says, "TBH I foundt that a lil bnit too well hidden"

Lancelot says, "I found that a lil bit too well hidden"

Lancelot says, "interesting game nevertheless."
Lancelot says, "I wish I could come up with game systems like that."
DavidW says, "I used a rhyming dictionary to help me get the other two exits from Wandering ... Where?."
DavidW says, "oh yeah, I mad admire that too."
DavidW says, "I really like the map I developed for my walkthrough of BBGG."
Lancelot says, "can you give me the link? clubfloyd history is not saved locally"

DavidW says, "okay, understand it's not polished up fully, and you're getting a sneak peek : [LINK]"
DavidW says, "I had trouble with the spoons in the game and I'm still working out what the actual problem is, so some of what I'm saying about the rug is probably incorrect."
Lancelot asks, "thye gnome is a typo I presume?"
DavidW says, "yes, and I'm very embarassed."
DavidW says, "or embarrased"
DavidW says, "I make way too many typoes in my first drafts of these."
Lancelot says, "a very nice map indeed, looks much better than my scrawly thing I made when first playing the game."
Lancelot says, "especially the starred thing... didnt realize at first that there was a strict order to which room you go to after returning to the central place"
DavidW says, "I didn't realize at first that the side-quest rooms weren't tied to the other locations, that it was a first, second, third, fourth deal."
DavidW says, "Replaying a game a few times exposes that sort of thing that playing once doesn't show."
Lancelot says, "true that"
Lancelot asks, "so what's the plan? Jacq and Roger, you here or just lorking?"
Lancelot says, "lurking even"
DavidW says, "I had to replay to make sure the shook shard was always in the laundromat."
Lancelot says, "I feel there are still some bugs there... esp with the number of dots shown"
DavidW asks, "Dots?"
Lancelot says, "it does not always match the number of expected solutions"
Lancelot says, "if you ll an object"
DavidW says, "oh that."

DavidW says, "yeah, there's definitely bugs remaining in the game."
Lancelot asks, "soo what we do now? its nice to chat and all, I presume no beta testing for IFComp today either?"
DavidW asks, "I'm tempted to start up a game with just the two of us. Are you okay with that?"
