ClubFloyd Transcript:
Bad Beer by Vivienne Dunstan
As played on ifMUD on September 8, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Bad Beer written by Vivienne Dunstan. It was released as part of the 2024 Interactive Fiction Competition, in which it tied for 31st place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

Jacqueline says, "New week, new game, new Perry. Have fun, y'all."
Roger says, "wooo"
DavidW says, "I'm not sure where everyone is or what we'll attempt today. We finished A Warm Reception last week."
DavidW asks, "What sort of game are people in the mood for?"
heasm66 asks, "something ; maybe something from the Comp?"
DavidW says, "I'm looking at [LINK] with the Parser option selected."
heasm66 asks, "Hildy?"
DavidW says, "I've started Hildy. I haven't finished it, but it's a long and interesting game firmly set in the Zork universe."
heasm66 says, "maybe something shorter then"
Roger says, "I have no strong opinions"
DavidW says, "Bad Beer is supposedly only one-hour long."
DavidW | A tale of dodgy drinks, things that go bump in the night, and stuff from the past that just ain't right || Content warning: alcohol (the game is set in a British pub selling beer), some spooky stuff and death
heasm66 says, "souns good"
DavidW says, "okay, I'll upload it. Gimme a minute."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask badbeer"

CF | Inside the Pub
CF | This is the main room of "The Dog and Duck", your local pub. You've
CF | spent many a happy night here. The room is quaint, with wooden beams.
CF | You feel the sense of history here. There are several tables and
CF | seats. To the south is the front door leading onto the street, and to
CF | the north is the area behind the bar.
CF |
CF | You can see Jack, some regulars and a pint glass here.

CF |
CF | Jack is in his early sixties. He has receding grey hair, and is rather
CF | plump around the midriff. He likes his beer! He's a friendly chap, who
CF | you've got to know well over the years since you moved here.
CF |
CF | You hear the chat of regulars, though a smaller number than the pub
CF | usually has.
CF |

CF |
CF | You raise the glass to your lips, and drink. But unlike the usual good
CF | drink here, this tastes like something really bad, rotten, just all
CF | wrong. You pull a face, and put the glass back down. "Aarr!" says
CF | Jack. "Now you see! It ain't right!" He takes the glass from you and
CF | empties it with disgust. "All our drinks taste like that now. I might
CF | as well shut up shop. I can't find anything wrongly set up. Can you
CF | check around the pub for me?" You nod, though uncertain what you will
CF | find. But Jack is just grateful, and shakes your hand warmly, before
CF | turning away, leaving you free to start exploring.
CF |
CF | The room is filled with the pleasant sounds of people drinking. Though
CF | they don't seem to be enjoying the beer as much as usual.

CF | This game came out of an original design written during a short RPG

CF |
CF | The main literary inspiration was K.M. Peyton's book A Pattern of

CF | strange, slow motion cry tumbles down the stairs ... the plant pot
CF | flying up into the air as he falls, only to land beside the boy's
CF | broken and bleeding body at the bottom of the stairs. The wooden toy
CF | he had been playing with also falls, rolling down towards the cellar.
CF | You know there is no hope. Your heart breaks.
CF |

CF | from all around. The room spins, and you find yourself ...

CF ] Inside the Pub
CF | ... back in the old version of the pub. You shake your head in
CF | disbelief. You hear the same story that you heard a few minutes ago.
CF | Will is standing by the bar. What on earth is happening?
CF |
CF | Inside the Pub
CF | This is a pub, with thick wooden beams, and lots of tables and chairs
CF | for people to sit in. It is a comfortable space. The area behind the
CF | bar is to the north and a door leads out to the south.
CF |
CF | You can see Will, a landlord and some customers here.

CF | Behind the Bar
CF | This is the area behind the pub counter. Similar to what you remember,
CF | though somewhat simpler. Exits go to the south, east and west from
CF | here.
CF |
CF | Suddenly you hear those fateful words again: "Will, can you go and
CF | fetch the plant pot from upstairs? I think it would do better down
CF | here." "Aye, sir," says Will. He turns, and almost seems to notice
CF | you. But then he turns away again, and the moment has passed.

CF ] In a small country churchyard
CF | Some time has passed, since your jaunt into the past. Today you are
CF | meeting Reverend Bottledale in the small churchyard some distance from
CF | the pub. He said he had something to show you.
CF |
CF | In a small country churchyard
CF | This is the village's old churchyard. A calm place, where old
CF | gravestones push up among wild flowers and grasses, with ancient trees
CF | leaning overhead, dappling the sunshine and providing shade. You can
CF | hear birds singing nearby.
CF |

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "ask vicar about will"
CF ] In a small country churchyard
CF | >
CF | > ASK VICAR ABOUT WILL
CF |
CF | The vicar says nothing, but looks thoughtful for a moment.
CF |
CF | "I've been thinking about what you said, about what you saw in the
CF | past," says the vicar quietly. "And I think I've found Will's grave."
CF | He leads you over towards a small gravestone. There you can just make
CF | out the name Will Sharman. Your skin tingles.
CF |
CF | "See: he died in 1912," says the vicar. "He lived a long, and happy
CF | life. I find it hard to believe what you told me, but he did not die
CF | from an accident, and lived to a grand old age. And this is a
CF | beautiful spot," he says, gently touching the top of the gravestone.
CF | Beyond the gravestone among the trees you see a faint figure watching.
CF | It is Will, young again. He smiles, and waves, then vanishes. There
CF | have been no more strange occurrences at the pub. Even the beer tastes
CF | fine now. He is truly at peace.
CF |
CF | You place the small wooden toy that you found in the pub's cellar
CF | beside Will's grave. It is only a small token, but it feels like the
CF | right thing to do. You turn away, determined not to forget the boy.
CF |
CF | But first it's time for a proper drink. Jack promised you a glass of
CF | the pub's once again excellent beer this afternoon. You head off
CF | towards the pub, chatting to the vicar about Will as you walk.

CF |
CF | Thank you for playing my game! I hope that you enjoyed it.
CF |
CF | I want to thank again my testers (Amanda Walker, Jeffrey Elliott, Jkj,
CF | Mel Jason, Josh Grams, Martin Dunstan and Nick Marsh), who spotted so
CF | many things, and without whom this game would have been much poorer.
CF |
CF | This game came out of an original design written during a short RPG
CF | scenario writing course, although I was intentionally thinking of
CF | something that might work as parser interactive fiction. It was ages
CF | before I pulled out the design again and started coding it.
CF |
CF | The main literary inspiration was K.M. Peyton's book A Pattern of
CF | Roses. Other inspirations were Helen Cresswell's book
CF | Moondial, Dee Cooke's PunyInform game Morris, and
CF | British TV series Sapphire & Steel. There are also elements
CF | inspired by my husband's home county Somerset, or, as I often like to
CF | think of it, Zummerzet.
CF |
CF | I am not a great beer drinker myself, but love cider, thanks to my
CF | husband's Somerset background. I should probably have coded some
CF | bizarre cider names in the game as well, to go along with the beers
CF | Honeyed Badger, Golden Hare, and Stinky Ferret!
CF |
CF | Thank you again for playing.
CF |
CF | Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT, UNDO the last

DavidW asks, "There's a game called Where Nothing Is Ever Named that supposedly takes 15 minutes or less. Shall I upload that next?"
Lancelot says, "I haven't played the game but saw that series a long time ago... pretty weird stuff happening etc"
Lancelot says, "yes sounds good"
heasm66 says, "let's do thst"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "quit"
