ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Bureau of Strange Happenings by Phil Riley
As played on ifMUD on September 15, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Bureau of Strange Happenings written by Phil Riley. It was released as part of the 2024 Interactive Fiction Competition, in which it took 18th place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF | Larch Faraji (they/them): An agent of the Bureau of Strange

CF | Specializes in the investigation of unexplained phenomena throughout

CF | neo-old-school punk band DC Trash. Liable to fits of sarcasm and

CF | As an agent of the Bureau of Strange Happenings (BOSH), it is Agent
CF | Larch Faraji's job to investigate unexplained phenomena throughout the
CF | United States and its territories. Recently, however, business hasn't
CF | been good. Once a bustling office with a dozen Agents, the Bureau's
CF | been reduced to just three: Faraji, Moira Zin, and Chief Huffton
CF | Klimp. The Bureau's expansive and well-appointed office suite was
CF | taken over by the State Department Book Club, and now the agents have
CF | been consigned to a tiny suite in a strip mall in the remote D.C.
CF | suburb of Swamp Park, Maryland. Today is move-in day at the bureau.
CF |
CF | We open on a decrepit strip mall just as an aging Hyundai pulls into
CF | the potholed parking lot. Agent Faraji steps out of the car. They
CF | survey the area and wrinkle their nose.

CF |
CF | Just like in the store this once was, the door chimes as Faraji walks

CF |
CF | Agent Faraji is in the front office. It's really a small
CF | storefront done up to resemble an office. A store sales counter
CF | functions as the BOSH front desk, behind which are located shelves of
CF | office supplies and a row of drawers. There are also a couch and
CF | coffee table here creating a makeshift seating area. An old department

CF | boxes sits in one corner.
CF |
CF | The exit is to the east, while the office continues via a hallway to

CF |
CF | The Bureau's latest office manager, Margaret is bustling around with
CF | unrestrained enthusiasm, unpacking boxes and assembling an
CF | approximation of a respectable front office, all as if the Bureau
CF | isn't going to be shut down before the year is out. She sees Faraji

CF | Wearing the astral lenses is overwhelming here, so Faraji decides not
CF | to put them on.

CF | Agent Faraji is on a featureless hyperplane. In addition to the
CF | usual directions of north and south and east and west, two new
