ClubFloyd Transcript:
Breakfast in the Dolomites by Roberto Ceccarelli
As played on ifMUD on October 6, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Breakfast in the Dolomites written by Roberto Ceccarelli. It was released as part of the 2024 Interactive Fiction Competition, in which it took 64th place. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

CF | Around the Three Peaks of Lavaredo
CF | The Three Peaks of Lavaredo, the symbol of the Dolomites, have always
CF | exerted a certain fascination, attracting climbers and hikers from all
CF | over the world. This is a true paradise for those who love hiking,
CF | mountaineering and vie ferrate. But that's not all... there are also
CF | some easy but breathtaking hikes, such as the tour around the Three
CF | Peaks of Lavaredo. The starting point for our walk is the Auronzo Hut
CF | (2,320 m).
CF | Crossing the Landro Valley we reach Lake Misurina, where we park our
CF | car. From here you can take the shuttle bus to the Auronzo Hut. Then
CF | we start our walk on the 101 path, which goes along the south side of
CF | the Three Peaks of Lavaredo to the Lavaredo Hut (2,344 m). From here
CF | take a small path to the left which leads to the Forcella di Lavaredo
CF | (2,454 m). There is a wonderful panoramic view, not only of the
CF | surrounding valleys, but also of the northern side of the Three Peaks
CF | of Lavaredo. Continue slightly downhill at the foot of Mount Paterno
CF | until you come to a fork, where you take the road that leads to the A.
CF | Locatelli Hut (2,405 m).
CF | Arriving at the refuge, after a walk of about 1.5 hours, we take a
CF | break and sit down on the grass to eat a typical snack of speck,
CF | salami and tomatoes. Then we start our way back, first to the Malga
CF | Lange (2,232 m, n. 105) and then, at the foot of the western face of
CF | the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, to the Auronzo Hut, from where we return
CF | to the car.

CF | King Laurin's Rose Garden
CF | Many, many years ago, on the Catinaccio mountain chain lived King
CF | Laurin, the cunning king of dwarves, who spent his time digging deep
CF | down into the earth to find precious stones. Among his various
CF | treasures, the king owned a magic belt, which allowed him to become
CF | invisible.
CF | One day, the King of Adige held a great feast and invited all the
CF | aristocrats in the area, except King Laurin. Nevertheless, the king of
CF | dwarves went to the feast anyway, wearing his belt so that he wouldn't
CF | be seen by anybody. Similde, the king's beautiful daughter, was also
CF | at the feast. Laurin fell in love with her at first sight and,
CF | exploiting the fact that he was invisible, he kidnapped her and took
CF | her to his kingdom on the Catinaccio mountain range.
CF | He was so in love with the young girl that, by casting a spell, he
CF | covered the mountain with a very beautiful layer of red roses. King
CF | Adige, however, did not sit on his hands and, together with his army,
CF | he marched towards King Laurin's kingdom to free his daughter.
CF | The king of dwarves was convinced that no-one would track him down
CF | because, thanks to his belt, he could become invisible, but he hadn't
CF | considered one thing: every time he moved on that garden of roses, he
CF | trampled some of them. Therefore, the soldiers just had to follow the
CF | path of the trampled roses to reach and catch him and tear the magic
CF | belt off him.
CF | The poor king of dwarves had no option, but to surrender and give
CF | beautiful Similde back to her father. Before doing so though he put a
CF | terrible curse on the rose garden that had betrayed him. He said, "No
CF | human eye will be able to admire you, neither during the day nor at
CF | night." Therefore, where there were once beautiful roses, only bare
CF | rocks remained.
CF | King Laurin though had not considered sunset, which was neither day
CF | nor night. That is why, still today, when the sun sinks behind the
CF | mountains, we can still admire the garden of red roses that tinges the
CF | Dolomite peaks.
