ClubFloyd Transcript:
The Gorreven Papers by Derek T. Jones
As played on ifMUD on November 24, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of The Gorreven Papers written by Derek T. Jones. It is an espionage game from 1992. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

DavidW says, "I think the Gorreven Papers was meant to be a demo game for another system, then ported to Inform 7."

CF |
CF |
CF | This should never have happened.
CF |
CF | You've told yourself that a thousand times. You are our most intrepid
CF | agent. If anyone could retrieve the Gorreven Papers, you could.
CF |
CF | The Gorreven Papers! To think of them was unspeakable; to speak of
CF | them was unthinkable.
CF |
CF | You took all the precautions you could have taken. Some places just
CF | aren't built to be broken into.
CF |
CF | Or out of.
CF |
CF | You have become intimately familiar with the four bare walls of your
CF | cell and the dirty yellow light bulb that glares down from the
CF | ceiling. Your cell has no door, but an alert guard blocks the doorway
CF | twenty-four hours a day—or at least as far as you can tell. You have
CF | to sleep sometimes. They leave the guard in a doorless doorway so that
CF | he will constantly remain alert. No napping on the other side of a
CF | supposedly secure steel door. It isn't surprising. If you had wanted
CF | to keep yourself prisoner you would have done the same.
CF |
CF | You were brought in here blindfolded after a good beating. It gives
CF | you headaches just trying to remember any of the turns you took on the
CF | way in. But now you're on the inside of this complex. On the same side
CF | of those electric fences as the Gorreven Papers. If you can't get out
CF | of here with the papers, you may as well not go out at all, because
CF | your life won't be worth a fake dollar bill. None of our lives will.

CF | Bare Cell
CF | A dirty yellow light bulb glares down from the ceiling. A dingy,
CF | ill-maintained cot with a thin and moth-eaten mattress sits against
CF | the far wall. The Marriott this isn't. A guard stands in an open
CF | doorway to the north.

CF |
CF | The thin mattress is spotted with stains of sweat and blood and sits

CF |

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "x metal"
CF ] Bare Cell
CF |
CF | > X METAL
CF |
CF | It is a piece of the cot's frame, about the length of your hand,
CF | sticking off to the side a little. The cot is not in good shape and
CF | this is one reason. It is almost completely broken off and is only
CF | barely connected to the cot at one end. One side of it is very sharp
CF | and dangerous.

CF | gaze to you.
CF |
CF | >
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "pull metal"
CF ] Bare Cell
CF |
CF | > PULL METAL
CF |
CF | You pull on the piece of metal experimentally. It creaks away from the
CF | frame, weakening the remaining connection further. If you pull it
CF | again, it might break off.
CF |

DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "g"

CF |
CF | You give the piece of metal a hard yank and twist and it breaks off
CF | suddenly with a soft popping sound. The guard has been watching the
CF | entire operation. "Murderous scheming dog," he snarls. His face twists
CF | into a mask of rage; his pistol is suddenly in his hand and he uses it
CF | to drill a .38 caliber hole through your skull. The black curtain of
CF | death falls with merciful speed.

CF |
CF | You give the piece of metal a hard yank and twist and it breaks off
CF | suddenly with a soft popping sound. Immediately you palm the
CF | incriminating evidence in your other hand. However, the sound alerts
CF | the guard, who whirls around with his gun drawn. "What was that
CF | noise?" he demands.
CF |
CF | "I hurt my hand on the cot," you grumble, holding up the hand you just
CF | used. Fortunately it is sporting a small trickle of blood, incurred
CF | when the metal came loose too suddenly. "I wanna doctor." It is of
CF | course the very last thing you want but it is important that you
CF | project an image of whining helplessness.
CF |
CF | He snorts and returns his gun to its holster. "You're barely important
CF | enough to be kept alive. Forget the doctor." You wonder what he has
CF | been told. It is true that you are too dangerous to be kept alive at
CF | much expense.

CF |
CF | You come up swiftly behind him and plunge the sharp metal into the
CF | back of his neck, through his carotid artery and out the front of his
CF | throat. This prevents him from screaming but not from fighting back.
CF | You hang onto his back, waiting for him to expend his last few seconds
CF | of life; he fires his gun twice but both shots are wild. You are safe.
CF | In a moment more he is growing cold in a pool of his own blood.
CF |
CF | >

CF |
CF | You take off the pair of prison coveralls.
CF |
CF | You struggle into his uniform. You are roughly the same height, but he
CF | was considerably larger at the middle, so the uniform bags somewhat.
CF | By tightening the belt, you look passable. It is unfortunate for the
CF | guard that it had to come to this but that is what happens to
CF | obstacles. You can still smell his odor on the collar and armpits.
CF | Blood is spattered down the front which is very annoying but there
CF | isn't much you can do about that.
