ClubFloyd Transcript:
Paranoia by Charm Cochran
As played on ifMUD on December 22, 2024

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Paranoia written by Charm Cochran. It was an entrant in Locus Jam 2024 and took first place in the Classic Class, ParserComp 2024. You can learn more about the game, including how to download it, by visiting IFDB.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing this game, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played this game, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

DavidW says, "I was thinking we might attempt Paranoia, the one from this year."
DavidW asks, "IFDB said it's some sort of spot-the-difference game?"
DavidW says, "Also, one review said the game has replay value, which is not generally a thing IF normally manages well."
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask paranoia24"

CF |
CF | "So," Dr. Iblis's voice comes over the intercom. "You'll want to get

CF |
CF | "Good," Dr. Iblis says over the intercom. "You can EXAMINE everything
CF | in the room that way—you can even shorten the 'EXAMINE' part of the
CF | command to just 'X' for your convenience. And you will want
CF | to. Examine everything, I mean. No spoilers, but you'll be tested on
CF | it.
CF |
CF | "In fact, you'll want to do more than examining. Use all of your
CF | senses. SMELL, LISTEN TO, TOUCH, and even TASTE everything in the
CF | room—I promise it's all been sanitized; the only germs in there are
CF | the ones you brought in yourself. Get a working knowledge of
CF | everything in the room, then PRESS the red button on the interface

CF | like you to determine whether or not they did. If something's changed,
CF | push the green button. If everything's as it was the first time
CF | around, push the red.
CF |
CF | "We're studying attention to detail here. More specifically, we're
CF | studying how people notice subtle changes over a long period of time.
CF | Your task is to do so—accurately determine whether or not something
CF | has changed—thirteen times in a row. You've got a bit of a head start
CF | after the first one, since you knew for sure nothing was different. If
CF | you ever get it wrong, though, that number on the wall will go back to
CF | zero. And before you ask, no, the number increasing to track your
CF | progress does not count as an anomaly.
CF |
CF | "So, to recap: press green if something's changed, red if everything's
CF | how it should be. Get it right thirteen times in a row and you're good
CF | to go, but get it wrong and the count starts over. I'm terrible about
CF | giving spoilers, so I won't come on the intercom after this. Begin

CF |
CF | Paranoia is a short interactive puzzler. Play time will vary,
CF | but a standard session is unlikely to last longer than about half an
CF | hour.
CF |
CF | It was created in less than one week for ParserComp 2024, the Locus
CF | Jam, and the I'm On Observation Duty Jam. It was written in Inform 7
CF | and uses the Bisquixe interpreter. If you're not playing it in a
CF | browser, you're not getting the full experience. It was inspired by
CF | games such as I'm On Observation Duty, Exit 8, and Everloop.
CF |
CF | Paranoia uses a limited verb set—if you're a seasoned IF
CF | player, you will find many standard actions useless. If you're new to
CF | IF, rejoice! This will be a gentler introduction than most. For the
CF | most part, using your five senses will get you far. For a full list of
CF | commands required to complete the game, type COMMANDS.
CF |
CF | For full credits, type CREDITS.

Jacqueline says, "We now haunt the lab, and torment Dr. Iblis for the remainder of his days."
DavidW says, "I can't remember where I've seen the name Iblis before."
Jacqueline says, "It is apparently the Arabic name for Satan in Islamic tradition."
Jacqueline says, "So there we are."

DavidW says, "well, maybe there is more to it, but I would be labour-intensive to prove that."
DavidW says, "er it would be"
Jacqueline says, "Thank you for the game, David."
Jacqueline says, "Well done."
DavidW says, "thanks"
DavidW says, "and you're welcome"
Roger says, "yeah, I probably would have lost patience/interest"
DavidW says, "I'm feeling a mite exhausted."
Jacqueline says, "Not surprised."
DavidW says, "I thought it might've been different from this, where having several pairs of eyes would make it easier to spot things."
DavidW says, "I think I was kinda expecting something like two beach scenes, find the five differences, then here's two zoo scenes and find their five differences, etc."
Roger says, "might have some marginal interest as a coding exercise, but probably not."
Jacqueline says, "Ah, yeah."
Jacqueline says (to Roger), "Agree."
Roger says, "and the QUIT gag was mildly interesting"
Jacqueline says, "'gag is the correct word for it. Well played, author. Well played."
Jacqueline claps. Slowly.
DavidW asks, "I'm wondering what would happen if we didn't quit. Would reality collapse and we die or something?"
DavidW asks, "would the set fall apart and we get to walk backstage and see all the variant chairs, etc?"
DavidW says, "Maybe the lights go out and come on again and the floor is lava."
Roger says, "That all sounds far too interesting for this particular game"
DavidW says, "yeah, perhaps."
DavidW says, "I think I should lie down. I'm starting to yawn a lot."
DavidW says, "thanks for the game"
DavidW says, "see you next week"
Roger says, "indeed! Merry xmas / happy new year, everyone"
Roger says, "I'll probably be here on the 29th but there's a chance not"
DavidW goes home.
DavidW has disconnected.
Roger disappears through an invisible gap in the MUD. You think you may have heard the sounds of chatting before the gap closed again. Jacqueline exclaims, "Happy holidays to you both!"
Roger asks, "you too! Do you have a break from work?"
