Words of Power by Stark Springs
wordsofpowerws by Unknown
As played on ifMUD on February 9-16, 2025

The idea behind ClubFloyd is that each week at a pre-arranged time, a group of people meet online to cooperatively play a game of interactive fiction.

Below is a transcript of Words of Power written by Stark Springs, and wordsofpowerws written by Unknown. It was released in 2002. You can learn more about the games, including how to download them, by visiting the IFDB pages: Words of Power, and wordsofpowerws.

WARNING! Below you will find a transcript of people playing these games, and it goes without saying that the transcript is full of spoilers. So, if you've never played these games, and think you might like to at some point, I do not recommend reading any further. Instead, you might want to return to the interactive fiction page.

#ClubFloyd Discussion

DavidW says, "I was thinking we'd play Words of Power today. If you have the time, you might want to read [Book.pdf] first for all the background info. The password is John with a capital J."
Roger says, "hmmm that's a lot of homework but okay"
Roger says, "Thanks for hosting, anyway"
DavidW says, "sure thing"
DavidW says, "I'll probably have to explain things as we play regardless, for those who don't have the time for reading it all."
Jacqueline says, "I will be here but seriously multitasking for the first 30-60 minutes."
DavidW says, "okay"
Jade goes home. Roger asks, "starting in an hour?"
DavidW says (to Roger), "yes, at noon"
Roger says, "thanks amigo"
DavidW says, "almost time"
Roger has arrived. Jacqueline says, "I won't be as double-booked as I'd feared - if y'all are willing to hold off, like, 10 minutes, I'll be completely free."
Roger says, "oh I SUPPOSE so"
DavidW says, "sure, we can wait 10 minutes."
Roger says, "enough time to review all the FUS RO DAH in the docs"
DavidW says, "Well, I can attempt to summarize."
Roger says, "I think I've grasped the thrust of it"
DavidW says, "Two years ago, a Dr. John Baxter, a quantum physics prof in Philadelphia, made a machine that sent him to the Kingdom of Ard in another dimension where magic works and he is now known as Gion the Earthling."
DavidW says, "He left a book in case anyone else followed him."
DavidW says, "Ard is roughly rectangular with the Endless Sea to the west, wastelands to the east, deep forest to the north, and Ultimate Mountains to the south. The human population has never really been able to go past these natural boundaries."
Roger says, "standard Gor setup, got it"
DavidW says, "Besides the humans, there's two other sentient species, the lizard-headed Falks and the cat-like Chenee."
Knight_Otu has arrived. Knight_Otu says, "Hey."
Roger says, "ahoy"
DavidW says, "The Falks live mostly in the mountains, are very tribal, dislike magic, stronger than humans, keen eyesight, poor color sense, pathetic at artistry."
DavidW says, "The Chenee are individualistic, all have magic, sleep half the time, and are ruled by eight elders. They prefer not to fight because their rate of reproduction is so low, but will fight to the death if they really truly disagree with an Elder's decision."
DavidW says, "The humans came from across the Endless Sea with the first king, R1naldo the 1st. Most of the kings have been Rinaldos, sons of the previous king."
DavidW says, "Rinaldo the 1st used 3 Gatestones to get to Ard and gave one stone to each of the Falks and Chenee for safekeeping. The three, together, can make portals from anywhere to anywhere else, including Earth, John assumes."
Jacqueline says, "Okay. Here."
Jacqueline says, "Like, I could 3-5 more minutes, but here."
DavidW says, "At some point, the Wizard War happened when one of the Rinaldos married a girl that a wizard fancied. The wizard destroyed the three major cities with an earthquake and fires. That wizard is dead or otherwise gone now."
Knight_Otu says, "Geeze."
DavidW says, "So now all the human-folk are mucho scared of all magic, killing children who show any skill in it."
DavidW says, "By the way, us Earth people are really really good at magic."
Knight_Otu says, "I sure am not."
DavidW says, "There's a prophecy about a wizard from faraway who will give a new king his inheritence when the two moons eclipse into an eye."
Roger says, "I can get as far as Abra Abra Cadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya"
Jacqueline says, "Heya, KO! Good to see you."
Jacqueline says, "Okay, really here now."
Knight_Otu says, "Hey, Jacq. Been a while."
Jacqueline says (to DW), "I am reading your summary..."
DavidW says, "Almost certainly, this is now, we're the wizard foretold, and the king's inheritence is likely the three Gatestones."
Jacqueline says (to KO), "Indeed! I actually love this new time, fwiw. Glad it worked out."
DavidW says, "Magic is done with words of power, at least when you're new to it."
DavidW says, "VA means create; RU means light; YN means great."
DavidW says, "So a create light spell is VA RU."
DavidW says, "To create a lot of light: YN VA RU."
DavidW says, "Also, we can spend centuries in Ard and only a couple years passing on Earth."
Knight_Otu says, "Hm."
DavidW says, "I'm summarizing [Book.pdf], password John."
DavidW asks, "And I think we're really to go, yes?"
DavidW asks, "er ready?"
Jacqueline says, "Okay, yes. I'm all caught up."
Roger says, "if the logging is underway, sure"
Jacqueline says, "oh wait, yeah."
Jade has arrived. Jacqueline asks, "Is it?"
DavidW says (to ClubFloyd), "load sleepmask wordsofpower"

CF |
CF |
CF | It had to be a Friday 13th, of course.
CF |
CF | More than two years ago, Dr. John Baxter, the world's brightest mind
CF | in quantum physics mysteriously disappeared from his lab at the
CF | University on a Friday 13th. Ever since, everybody at Uni tried to
CF | stay away from this lab on a 13th, Friday or not. Everybody except
CF | you, that is. After all, you are Thea Armstrong, soon to get your
CF | degree in physics and bad luck is just a superstition.
CF |
CF | You made a habit out of sneaking into the lab during these days, to
CF | enjoy some peace and quiet. Today was no different. However, after
CF | half an hour, you heard an incessant humming in one of the lab
CF | annexes. It was annoying and you were unable to concentrate on your
CF | book. You opened the door and found a large box, with countless levers
CF | and lights on it. There was a big, red lever marked "POWER". You
CF | pulled it, trying to turn the device off.
CF |
CF | Instead, the humming grew louder and you felt faint for a moment. When
CF | you opened your eyes again, the world around you was different...

CF | Stone Road
CF | When the path leads you out of the tree cluster, the scene in front of
CF | you seems unreal and it takes you a few moments to figure why. A large
CF | plain stretches to the west, but you can see no horizon line, only a
CF | hazy band, far far away, of a darker blue than the sky. The sun, huge
CF | and orange like a basketball hangs low in the sky. A neglected road,
CF | paved with round, irregular stones and overgrown with grass makes its
CF | way from north to south and its both ends are lost in the same haze
CF | that replaces the horizon line.
CF |
CF | The cat trots behind you.

CF |
CF | You head north, following the stone road. Hours pass and the night
CF | falls, tiredness forcing you to seek shelter behind some trees close
CF | to the road.
CF |
CF | You dream of walking a wooden hall, lighted by oil lamps affixed to
CF | the walls. Closed wooden doors, blackened by time and smoke, stand on
CF | either side of the hall, but you don't stop at any of them, following
CF | the hall to its end. There, a lone window looks out into the night
CF | and, as you get closer, you can see your reflection in the glass. You
CF | are a young boy, about ten years old. The light from the oil lamps
CF | casts your face in silver.

CF |
CF | You wake up, clutching the silver coin in your fist, your only
CF | possession in this world, which took you years to gain. You shake your
CF | head, trying to make the strange dream go away. You dreamt that you
CF | are a woman from another world, arrived here by mistake. You even had
CF | a name in your dream - Thea. Very strange, considering that you never
CF | had a name. People always called you 'boy' or 'freak'.
CF |
CF | However, you can't afford to spend too much time thinking about the
CF | dream. Tonight you are going to run away from this place where nobody
CF | loves you. The innkeeper used to play with you when he was a kid. Now
CF | he hits you for the slightest mistake you make and makes you work day
CF | and night. Nobody likes you, because other people grow up, grow old
CF | and die. You don't grow old. You don't grow up, either. The innkeeper
CF | always says that you are like the bloody falks, then hits you again
CF | with his whip. So you decided - tonight you'll run to the falks.
CF | They'll help you, since you are small, just like they are. You even
CF | have a silver coin to buy food on the road.
CF |

CF | Three walls and a straw mattress - the only place you ever called home
CF | is this former pony stall, too small for a horse, but big enough for

CF | Should they praise or should they jeer,
CF | Look but coldly on it all.
CF |
CF | Things you'll meet of many a kind,
CF | Sights and sounds and tales no end,
CF | But to keep them all in mind
CF | Who would bother to attend?...
CF | Very little does it matter,
CF | If you can yourself fulfill,
CF | That with idle, empty chatter
CF | Days go past and days come still.
CF |
CF | Little heed the lofty ranging
CF | That cold logic does display
CF | To explain the endless changing
CF | Of this pageantry of joy,
CF | And which out of death is growing
CF | But to last an hour or two;
CF | For the mind profoundly knowing
CF | All is old and all is new.
CF |
CF | As before some troupe of actors,
CF | You before the world remain;
CF | Act they Gods, or malefactors,
CF | 'Tis but they, dressed up again.
CF | And their loving and their slaying,
CF | Sit apart and watch, until
CF | You will see behind their playing
CF | What is well and what is ill.
CF |
CF | What has been and what to be
CF | Are but of a page each part
CF | Which the world to read is free.
CF | Yet who knows them off by heart?
CF | All that was and is to come
CF | Prospers in the present too,
CF | But its narrow modicum
CF | You imagine and construe.
CF |
CF | With the selfsame scales and gauges
CF | This great universe to weigh,
CF | Man has been for thousand ages
CF | Sometimes sad and sometimes gay;
CF | Other masks, the same old story,
CF | Players pass and reappear,
CF | Broken promises of glory;
CF | Do not hope and do not fear.
CF |
CF | Do not hope when greed is staring
CF | O'er the bridge that luck has flung,
CF | These are fools for not despairing,
CF | On their brows though stars are hung;
CF | Do not fear if one or other
CF | Does his comrades deep enthrall,
CF | Do not let him call you brother,
CF | Waves that leap like waves must fall.
CF |
CF | Like the sirens' silver singing
CF | Men spread nets to catch their prey,
CF | Up and down the curtain swinging
CF | Midst a whirlwind of display.
CF | Leave them room without resistance,
CF | Nor their commentaries cheer,
CF | Hearing only from a distance,
CF | Should they praise or should they jeer.
CF |
CF | If they touch you, do not tarry,
CF | Should they curse you, hold your tongue,
CF | All your counsel must miscarry
CF | Knowing who you are among.
CF | Let them muse and let them mingle,
CF | Let them pass both great and small;
CF | Unattached and calm and single,
CF | Look but coldly on it all.
CF |
CF | Look but coldly on it all,
CF | Should they praise or should they jeer;
CF | Waves that leap like waves must fall,
CF | Do not hope and do not fear.
CF | You imagine and construe

CF | All is old and all is new,
CF | Days go past and days come still.

CF |
CF | Carved deep into the stone obelisk are two names and a poem. Time and
CF | weather have eroded the surface, but the words are still visible:
CF |
CF | Ar-Tea (????-6239)
CF |
CF | Two candles, tall sentry, beside an earth mound,
CF | A dream with wings broken that trail to the ground,
CF | Loud flung from the belfry calamitous chime...
CF | 'Tis thus that you passed o'er the boundaries of time.
CF |
CF | Gone by are the hours when the heavens entire
CF | Flowed rivers of milk and grew flowers of fire,
CF | When the thunderous clouds were but castles erect
CF | Which the moon like a queen each in turn did inspect.
CF |
CF | I see you a shadow bright silver transcending,
CF | With wings high uplifted to heaven ascending,
CF | I see you slow climbing through sky's scaffold bars
CF | Midst a tempest of light and a snowstorm of stars;
CF |
CF | While the witches the sound of their spinning prolong,
CF | Exalted in sunshine, swept up by a song,
CF | O'er your breast like a saint your white arms crossed in prayer,
CF | And gold on the water, and silver in the air.
CF |
CF | I see your soul's parting, its flight I behold;
CF | Then gaze at the clay that remains... mute and cold,
CF | At the winding-sheet clung to the coffin's rude sill,
CF | At your smile sweet and candid, that seems alive still.
CF |
CF | And I ask times unending my soul torn with doubt,
CF | O why, pallid angel, your light has gone out,
CF | For were you not blameless and wonderfully fair?
CF | Have you gone to rekindle a star in despair?
CF |
CF | I fancy on high there are things without name,
CF | Broad rivers of fire spanned by bridges of flame,
CF | Strange castles that spires till the zenith up fling,
CF | With stairways of incense and flowers that sing.
CF |
CF | And you wander among them, a worshipful queen,
CF | With hair of bright starlight and eyes vespertine,
CF | In a tunic of turquoise bespattered with gold,
CF | While a wreath of green laurels does your forehead enfold.
CF |
CF | O, death is chaos, an ocean of stars gleaming,
CF | While life is a quagmire of doubts and of dreaming.
CF | Oh, death is an aeon of sun-blazoned spheres,
CF | 'While life but a legend of wailing and tears.
CF |
CF | Through my head beats a whirlwind, a clamorous wrangle
CF | Of thoughts and of dreams that despair does entangle;
CF | For when suns are extinguished and meteors fall
CF | The whole universe seems to mean nothing at all.
CF |
CF | Maybe that one day the arched heavens will sunder,
CF | And down through their break all the emptiness thunder,
CF | Void's night o'er the earth its vast nothing extending,
CF | The loot of an instant of death without ending.
CF |
CF | If so, then forever your flame did succumb,
CF | And forever your voice from today will be dumb.
CF | If so, the hereafter can bring no rebirth.
CF | If so, then this angel was nothing but earth.
CF |
CF | And thus, lovely soil that breath has departed,
CF | I stand by your coffin alone broken-hearted;
CF | And yet I don't weep, rather praise for its fleeing
CF | Your ray softly crept from this chaos of being.
CF |
CF | For who shall dare which is ill and which well,
CF | The is or the isn't? Can anyone tell?
CF | For he who is not, even grief can't destroy,
CF | And oft is the grieving, and seldom the joy.
CF |
CF | To exist! O, what nonsense, what foolish conceit;
CF | Our eyes but deceive us, our ears but cheat,
CF | What this age discovers, the next will deny,
CF | Far better just nothing than naught but a lie.
CF |
CF | I see dreams in men's clothing that after dreams chase,
CF | But that tumble in tombs ere the end of the race,
CF | And I search in my soul how this horror to fly,
CF | To laugh like a madman? To curse? Or to cry?
CF |
CF | O, what is the meaning? What sense does agree?
CF | The end of such beauty, had that got to be?
CF | Sweet seraph of clay where still lingers life's smile,
CF | Just in order to die did you live for a while?
CF | O, tell me the meaning. This angel or clod?
CF | I find on her forehead no witness of God.
